'Tested' in the Bible

So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he threw it into the water, the water became drinkable.He made a statute and ordinance for them at Marah and He tested them there.

There the LORD presented to them a statute and an ordinance, and there he tested them. He said, "If you will carefully obey the LORD your God, do what he sees to be right, listen to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, then I won't inflict on you all the diseases that I inflicted on the Egyptians, because I am the LORD your healer."

He named the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites complained, and because they tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
