'Woe' in the Bible
The expression of their faces bears witness against them,And they display their sin like Sodom;They do not even conceal it.Woe to them!For they have brought evil on themselves.
Woe to the wicked! It will go badly with him,For what he deserves will be done to him.
Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field,Until there is no more room,So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land!
Woe to those who rise early in the morning that they may pursue strong drink,Who stay up late in the evening that wine may inflame them!
Woe to those who drag iniquity with the cords of falsehood,And sin as if with cart ropes;
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness;Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyesAnd clever in their own sight!
Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wineAnd valiant men in mixing strong drink,
Then I said,“Woe is me, for I am ruined!Because I am a man of unclean lips,And I live among a people of unclean lips;For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.”
Woe to those who enact evil statutesAnd to those who constantly record unjust decisions,
Woe to Assyria, the rod of My angerAnd the staff in whose hands is My indignation,
From the ends of the earth we hear songs, “Glory to the Righteous One,”But I say, “Woe to me! Woe to me! Alas for me!The treacherous deal treacherously,And the treacherous deal very treacherously.”
Woe to the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim,And to the fading flower of its glorious beauty,Which is at the head of the fertile valleyOf those who are overcome with wine!
Woe, O Ariel, Ariel the city where David once camped!Add year to year, observe your feasts on schedule.
Woe to those who deeply hide their plans from the Lord,And whose deeds are done in a dark place,And they say, “Who sees us?” or “Who knows us?”
“Woe to the rebellious children,” declares the Lord,“Who execute a plan, but not Mine,And make an alliance, but not of My Spirit,In order to add sin to sin;
Woe to those who go down to Egypt for helpAnd rely on horses,And trust in chariots because they are manyAnd in horsemen because they are very strong,But they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!
Woe to you, O destroyer,While you were not destroyed;And he who is treacherous, while others did not deal treacherously with him.As soon as you finish destroying, you will be destroyed;As soon as you cease to deal treacherously, others will deal treacherously with you.
“Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker—An earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth!Will the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you doing?’Or the thing you are making say, ‘He has no hands’?
“Woe to him who says to a father, ‘What are you begetting?’Or to a woman, ‘To what are you giving birth?’”
