'Sheep' in the Bible
When He saw the crowds, He felt compassion for them, because they were weary and worn out, like sheep without a shepherd.
Instead, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
“Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as harmless as doves.
But He said to them, “What man among you, if he had a sheep that fell into a pit on the Sabbath, wouldn’t take hold of it and lift it out?
A man is worth far more than a sheep, so it is lawful to do what is good on the Sabbath.”
He replied, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
What do you think? If a man has 100 sheep, and one of them goes astray, won’t he leave the 99 on the hillside and go and search for the stray?
And if he finds it, I assure you: He rejoices over that sheep more than over the 99 that did not go astray.
All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
He will put the sheep on His right and the goats on the left.
Then Jesus said to them, “Tonight all of you will run away because of Me, for it is written:I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.
So as He stepped ashore, He saw a huge crowd and had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then He began to teach them many things.
Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will run away, because it is written:I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.
“What man among you, who has 100 sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the 99 in the open field and go after the lost one until he finds it?
and coming home, he calls his friends and neighbors together, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep!’
“Which one of you having a slave tending sheep or plowing will say to him when he comes in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’?
In the temple complex He found people selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and He also found the money changers sitting there.
After making a whip out of cords, He drove everyone out of the temple complex with their sheep and oxen. He also poured out the money changers’ coins and overturned the tables.
“I assure you: Anyone who doesn’t enter the sheep pen by the door but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber.
The one who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
The doorkeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they recognize his voice.
So Jesus said again, “I assure you: I am the door of the sheep.
All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them.
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
The hired man, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them and runs away when he sees a wolf coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them.
This happens because he is a hired man and doesn’t care about the sheep.
“I am the good shepherd. I know My own sheep, and they know Me,
as the Father knows Me, and I know the Father. I lay down My life for the sheep.
But I have other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd.
My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me.
A second time He asked him, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”“Yes, Lord,” he said to Him, “You know that I love You.”“Shepherd My sheep,” He told him.
He asked him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”Peter was grieved that He asked him the third time, “Do you love Me?” He said, “Lord, You know everything! You know that I love You.”“Feed My sheep,” Jesus said.
Now the Scripture passage he was reading was this:He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb is silent before its shearer,so He does not open His mouth.
As it is written:Because of Youwe are being put to death all day long;we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered.
Now may the God of peace, who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus—the great Shepherd of the sheep—with the blood of the everlasting covenant,
For you were like sheep going astray, but you have now returnedto the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
