Don’t you have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you look down on the church of God and embarrass those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I do not praise you for this!
In like manner also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye drink it , in remembrance of me.
Let each man look into his own heart, and only then eat of the bread and drink from the cup.
On the contrary, those parts of the body which seem to be weaker [i.e., delicate organs like the heart, lungs, kidneys, etc.] are necessary [for life].
while our more presentable parts do not require it. But God has combined the [whole] body, giving greater honor to that part which lacks it,
so that there would be no division or discord in the body [that is, lack of adaptation of the parts to each other], but that the parts may have the same concern for one another.
If I make use of the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am like sounding brass, or a loud-tongued bell.
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.
Now I would like all of you to speak in languages [supernaturally], but I would rather have you prophecy. For the person who prophesies is more important [i.e., to the church] than those who speak in languages [supernaturally], unless that person interprets [the languages], so the church can be built up [spiritually].
In like manner, the things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, if, a distinction in the sounds, they do not give, how shall it be known, what is being piped or harped?
So, unless you people also speak clearly with your tongue, how will your speaking be understood? For it will be like you were speaking into the air.
But if the sense of the voice is not clear to me, I am like a man from a strange country to him who is talking, and he will be the same to me.
So, you people also, since you are eager for [supernatural] spiritual gifts, should look for ways to excel in building up the church.
Brothers, stop being childish in your thinking. Be like infants with respect to evil, but think like adults.
and He appeared to Cephas [i.e., Peter. See Luke 24:34], and then to the twelve apostles. [See Luke 24:33].
It is just like this with the resurrection of the dead.
As is the earthly man [the man of dust], so are those who are of earth; and as is the heavenly [Man], so are those who are of heaven.
And just as we [now] appear [in both a physical and spiritual body] like the man who came from dust [i.e., Adam]; we will also [someday] appear [in both a physical(?) and spiritual body] like the man who came from heaven [i.e., Christ].
Look, I am telling you a secret truth: We will not all die, but we will all be changed [i.e., physically and spiritually]
Let no man therefore despise him: but conduct him forth in peace, that he may come unto me: for I look for him with the brethren.
Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
to submit yourselves to people like these and to anyone else who shares their labor and hard work.
and I rejoice over the presence of Stephanas, and Fortunatus, and Achaicus, because the lack of you did these fill up;
For they refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore acknowledge those who are like that.
Now I would like you to know about the distress which befell me in Asia, brothers. I was crushed, crushed far more than I could stand, so much so that I despaired even of life;
in this confidence I purposed to visit you before now, (that you might have again the like satisfaction)
So then, was I indecisive or capricious when I was [originally] planning this? Or the things I plan, do I plan
As certainly as God is faithful, we haven't talked to you with mixed messages like that.
Now God is the One who makes us stand firm with you in [fellowship with] Christ. He has anointed us [Note: "Anointed" here probably refers to selecting, appointing and commissioning people for some form of Christian service. See Luke 4:18];
To a man like that, this censure by the majority has been sufficient punishment,
For we [i.e., through our preaching] are like a fragrant incense which goes up to God, [and spreads the knowledge] of Christ among both saved and lost people.
For we are not like many, [acting like merchants] peddling God’s word [shortchanging and adulterating God’s message]; but from pure [uncompromised] motives, as [commissioned and sent] from God, we speak [His message] in Christ in the sight of God.
Are we starting to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, like some [false teachers], letters of recommendation to you or from you? [No!]
But if the ministration of death, written, and engraven on stones, came with glory, so that the children of Israel could not look stedfastly upon the face of Moses for the glory of his face; which glory was passing away:
Therefore, cherishing a hope like this, we speak without reserve, and we do not imitate Moses,
And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
And all of us, with unveiled faces, reflecting like bright mirrors the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same likeness, from one degree of radiant holiness to another, even as derived from the Lord the Spirit.
never free from the danger of being put to death like Jesus, so that in my body the life of Jesus also may be seen.
sure that he who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will raise me also like Jesus, and bring me side by side with you into his presence.
For our present light affliction works out for us an eternal fullness of glory, excelling all excellence, ls while we look not at the things that are seen, but at the things that are not seen: for the things seen are temporal; but the things not seen are eternal.
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
For we know that if our earthly "house" [i.e., our physical body] which is like a tent, is torn down, we have [the promise of] a building from God, a never ending "house" in heaven that is not made by human hands.
For indeed in this house we groan, longing to be clothed with our [immortal, eternal] celestial dwelling,
From now on, then, we do not know
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
For He says:
and I helped you in the day of salvation.
Look, now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation.
in honour and disgrace, under infamy, and in repute: look'd upon as an impostor, while I say what is true;
as dying and look—we live;
as being disciplined yet not killed;
There is no limit to our affection for you, but you are limited in your own affection [for us].
Now for a recompense in like kind (I speak as unto my children), be ye also enlarged.
Do not come into close association with unbelievers, like oxen yoked with asses. For what is there in common between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what partnership has light with darkness?
So since we have promises like these, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves of everything that can defile body or spirit, and by reverence for God make our consecration complete.
For [you can look back and] see what an earnestness and authentic concern this godly sorrow has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves [against charges that you tolerate sin], what indignation [at sin], what fear [of offending God], what longing [for righteousness and justice], what passion [to do what is right], what readiness to punish [those who sin and those who tolerate sin]! At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in the matter.
Now finish doing it too, so that your readiness to finish it may be just like your readiness to start it, in accordance with what you have.
but on the principle of equality; in the present time your abundance for their lack, that their abundance may be for your lack, so that there should be equality.
As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack.
And we have sent along with him the
Therefore I think it necessary to urge the Brothers to go to you in advance, and to complete the arrangements for the gift, which you have already promised, so that it may be ready, as a gift, before I come, and not look as if it were being given under pressure.
For this service of giving that you perform not only makes up for lack among the saints, but abounds also through many givings of thanks to God;
Moreover, I, Paul, myself, exhort you, through the meekness and considerateness of the Christ, - I who, to look upon, indeed, am lowly toward you, but, absent, am bold towards you; -
Of course, we are living in the world, but we do not wage war in a world-like way.
For the weapons of our warfare are not like the world's [i.e., which rely on human ingenuity and unspiritual principles], but they are empowered by God to overthrow [Satanic] fortifications.
Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.
Someone like this should take note of the following: What we say by letter when we are absent is what we will do when present!
For we don’t dare classify or compare ourselves with some who commend
I am jealous over you with God's own jealousy. For I have betrothed you to Christ to present you to Him like a faithful bride to her one husband.
and being present with you, and having been in want, I was chargeable to no one, for my lack did the brethren supply -- having come from Macedonia -- and in everything burdenless to you I did keep myself, and will keep.
But what I am doing I will keep doing, [for I am determined to keep this independence] in order to cut off the claim of those who want an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things they brag about.
For such men are false Apostles, workers of deceit, making themselves seem like Apostles of Christ.
Therefore, it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves so as to be like the ministers of righteousness; of such, the end shall be according to their works.
I will say it again: No one should think that I am a fool. But if you do, then treat me like a fool so that I can also boast a little.
When I talk as a confident boaster, I am not talking with the Lord's authority but like a fool.
To my shame, I must say, we have been too weak [in comparison to those pseudo-apostles who take advantage of you].But in whatever anyone else dares to boast—I am speaking foolishly—I also dare to boast.
Are they [self-proclaimed] servants of Christ?—I am speaking as if I were out of my mind—I am more so [for I exceed them]; with far more labors, with far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, and often in danger of death.
in labor and hardship, often unable to sleep, in hunger and thirst, often [driven to] fasting [for lack of food], in cold and exposure [without adequate clothing].
was [actually] taken up into Paradise. [Note: This is the same as the "third heaven" of the previous verse, and was a place in the presence of God. See Luke 23:43; Rev. 2:7]. There he heard inexpressible words which are not permitted for people to repeat.
Of an experience like that I am prepared to boast, but not of myself personally ??not except as regards my weaknesses.
And judging by the stupendous grandeur of the revelations--therefore lest I should be over-elated there has been sent to me, like the agony of impalement, Satan's angel dealing blow after blow, lest I should be over-elated.
Most gladly therefore will I boast rather of my weakness, that over me like a tent may be pitched the power of Christ. That is why I rejoice in weakness, in ill-treatment, in troubles, in persecutions and calamities for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong.
Now I have become foolish; you have forced me [by questioning my apostleship]. Actually I should have been commended by you [instead of being treated disdainfully], for I was not inferior to those
Now I am ready to come to you this third time.
I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother: Did Titus defraud you of any thing? Walked we not in one spirit? Walked we not in like steps?
Now I pray to God, to do you nothing harmful, not that we would appear test-passing, but that ye would do right, even like we might be test-failing.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the holy ghost, be with you all. Amen. {The end of the Second Epistle unto the Corinthians, Sent from Philippi, a city in Macedonia, by Titus and Luke}
I am astonished you are hastily shifting like this, deserting Him who called you by Christ's grace and going over to another gospel.
For I would like to clarify for you, brothers, the situation regarding the Gospel that I have preached: It did not originate from man.
And I advanced in Judaism above many like in my race, being more abundantly zealous of paternal traditions.
but on the contrary, seeing that I am intrusted with the gospel of the uncircumcision, like Peter of the circumcision,
And along with him the other Jews also concealed their real opinions, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their lack of straightforwardness.
But when I saw that they were not being straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas (Peter) in front of everyone, “If you, being a Jew, live [as you have been living] like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how is it that you are [now virtually] forcing the Gentiles to live like Jews [if they want to eat with you]?”
But, if while we were trying to be made right with God through a relationship with Christ, we were discovered to still be sinners [by acting like unsaved Gentiles], does that mean Christ is responsible for our sin? Of course not.
The only thing I would like to learn from you is this: Did you receive the Holy Spirit [into your lives] by [meeting the requirements of] the law of Moses or by hearing [and obeying the message] of faith [in Christ]?
For if the inheritance [of what was promised] is based on [observing] the Law [as these false teachers claim], it is no longer based on a promise; however, God granted it to Abraham [as a gift] by virtue of His promise.
So, the law of Moses became like our "transportation to school," bringing us to [the school of] Christ where we [learn how to be] made right with God by faith [in Christ].
So also we [whether Jews or Gentiles], when we were children (spiritually immature), were kept like slaves under the elementary [man-made religious or philosophical] teachings of the world.
I ask you, brothers, become like me, because I also [have become] like you. You have done me no [wrong]!
And you did not despise or disdain [what was] a trial for you in my flesh, but you welcomed me like an angel of God, like Christ Jesus.
I would like to be with you right now and change my tone of voice, because I don’t know what to do about you.
