beginning from the baptism of John until the day [on] which he was taken up from us--one of these [men] must become a witness of his resurrection together with us."

Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan were going out to him, and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River [as they] confessed their sins. But [when he] saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "Offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? read more.
Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance!


Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John in order to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent him, saying, "{I need} to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered [and] said to him, "Permit [it] now, for in this way it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he permitted him. read more.
Now [after he] was baptized, Jesus immediately went up from the water, and behold, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove coming upon him.

From where was the baptism of John--from heaven or from men?" And they began to discuss [this] among themselves, saying, "If we say 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?'

John was there baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the Judean region and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem went out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

I baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." And it happened that in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. And immediately [as he] was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens being split apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him.

The baptism of John--was [it] from heaven or from men? Answer me!"

Therefore he was saying to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "Offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance! And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham [as] father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones!

And tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?"

Now it happened that when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and [while he] was praying, heaven was opened,

(And all the people, [when they] heard [this]--even the tax collectors--affirmed the righteousness of God, [because they] had been baptized [with] the baptism of John, but the Pharisees and the legal experts rejected the purpose of God for themselves, [because they] had not been baptized by him.)

The baptism of John--was [it] from heaven or from men?

And they asked him and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water. In your midst stands [one] whom you do not know--

These [things] took place in Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

And I did not know him, but in order that he could be revealed to Israel, because of this I came baptizing with water."

And I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water, that one said to me, '[The one] upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him--this one is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'

Now John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and they were coming and were being baptized.

And he went away again on the other side of the Jordan, to the place where John was baptizing at an earlier time, and he stayed there.


you know the thing that happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism that John proclaimed:

And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into the baptism of John." And Paul said, "John baptized [with] a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the one who was to come after him--that is, in Jesus."


From where was the baptism of John--from heaven or from men?" And they began to discuss [this] among themselves, saying, "If we say 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?'

And tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?"

Now John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and they were coming and were being baptized.

Before {his coming} John had publicly proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into the baptism of John."


Now [when] John heard in prison the deeds of Christ, he sent [word] by his disciples [and] said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" And Jesus answered [and] said to them, "Go [and] tell John what you hear and see: read more.
the blind receive sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised, and the poor have good news announced to [them]. And whoever is not offended by me is blessed." Now [as] these were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in the houses of kings. But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet! It is this man about whom it is written: 'Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.' Truly I say to you, among [those] born of women there has not arisen [one] greater than John the Baptist. But the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven is treated violently, and the violent claim it. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John, and if you are willing to accept [it], he is Elijah, the one who is going to come. The one who has ears, let him hear! "But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to one another, saying, 'We played the flute for you and you did not dance; we sang a lament and you did not mourn.' For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon!' The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a man [who is] a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' But wisdom is vindicated by her deeds."

And his disciples reported to John about all these [things]. And summoning a certain two of his disciples, John sent [them] to the Lord, saying, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" And [when] the men came to him, they said, "John the Baptist sent us to you, saying, 'Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?'" read more.
In that hour he healed many [people] of diseases and suffering and evil spirits, and he granted sight to many blind [people]. And he answered [and] said to them, "Go [and] tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear; the dead are raised, the poor have good news announced to [them]. And whoever is not offended by me is blessed." And [when] the messengers of John had departed, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? Which of the two did the will of [his] father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going ahead of you into the kingdom of God!


And tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?"

(And all the people, [when they] heard [this]--even the tax collectors--affirmed the righteousness of God, [because they] had been baptized [with] the baptism of John,

For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did believe him. And [when] you saw [it], you did not even change your minds later [so as] to believe in him.


And tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?"

(And all the people, [when they] heard [this]--even the tax collectors--affirmed the righteousness of God, [because they] had been baptized [with] the baptism of John,
