Since many have attempted to compile an account concerning the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses and servants of the word from the beginning passed on to us, it seemed best to me also--[because I] have followed all [things] carefully from the beginning--to write [them] down in orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus,read more.
so that you may know the certainty concerning the things about which you were taught.
This is the disciple who is testifying about these [things], and who has written down these [things]. And we know that his testimony is true.
I produced the former account, O Theophilus, about all {that} Jesus began to do and to teach, until the day he was taken up, [after he] had given orders through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen,
For I passed on to you {as of first importance} what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised up on the third day according to the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve,read more.
then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, the majority of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all, as it were to one born at the wrong time, he appeared also to me.
For we did not make known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ [by] following ingeniously concocted myths, but [by] being eyewitnesses of that one's majesty.
What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and our hands have touched, concerning the word of life-- and the life was revealed, and we have seen and testify and announce to you the eternal life which was with the Father and was revealed to us-- what we have seen and heard, we announce to you also, in order that you also may have fellowship with us, and indeed our fellowship [is] with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.read more.
And these [things] we write, in order that our joy may be complete.
Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written [that] the Christ would suffer and would rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.read more.
You are witnesses of these [things].
But you will receive power [when] the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest part of the earth."
And [while] they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees approached them, greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they laid hands on them and put [them] in custody until the next day, because it was already evening.read more.
But many of those who listened to the message believed, and the number of the men was approximately five thousand. And it happened that on the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes came together in Jerusalem, and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all those who were from the high priest's family. And they made them stand in [their] midst [and] began to ask, "By what power or by what name did you do this?" Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today concerning a good deed [done to] a sick man--by what [means] this man was healed-- let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead--by him this man stands before you healthy! This one is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, that has become {the cornerstone}. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among people by which we must be saved." Now [when they] saw the boldness of Peter and John, and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were astonished, and recognized them, that they had been with Jesus. And [because they] saw the man who had been healed standing there with them, they had nothing to say in return. But [after they] had ordered them to go outside the Sanhedrin, they began to confer with one another, saying, "What should we do with these men? For that a remarkable sign has taken place through them [is] evident to all those who live [in] Jerusalem, and we are not able to deny [it]! But in order that it may not spread much [further] among the people, let us warn them to speak no more in this name {to anyone at all}." And they called them [back] [and] commanded [them] not to speak or to teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered [and] said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than God, you decide! For we are not able to refrain from speaking about [the things] that we have seen and heard."
And we are witnesses of these things, and [so is] the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him."
But God raised him from the dead, who appeared for many days to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem--who are now his witnesses to the people.
how will we escape [if we] neglect so great a salvation which had [its] beginning [when it] was spoken through the Lord [and] was confirmed to us by those who heard, [while] God was testifying at the same time by signs and wonders and various miracles and distributions of the Holy Spirit according to his will.
Therefore [I, your] fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, [and] also a sharer of the glory that is going to be revealed, exhort the elders among you:
And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son [to be the] Savior of the world.
Every day, both in the temple [courts] and from house [to house], they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news [that] the Christ [was] Jesus.
How then will they call upon [him] in whom they have not believed? And how will they believe [in him] about whom they have not heard? And how will they hear about [him] without one who preaches [to them]? And how will they preach, unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "How timely [are] the feet of those who bring good news of good things."
Now I make known to you, brothers, the gospel which I proclaimed to you, which you have also received, in which you also stand, by which you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the message I proclaimed to you, unless you believed to no purpose.
To me, the least of all the saints, was given this grace: to proclaim the good news of the fathomless riches of Christ to the Gentiles, and to enlighten everyone [as to] what [is] the administration of the mystery hidden from the ages by God, who created all [things],
But when they believed Philip [as he] was proclaiming the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were being baptized.
For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased through the foolishness of preaching to save those who believe.
and they were only hearing, "The one formerly persecuting us is now proclaiming the faith that formerly he was attempting to destroy,"
preach the word, be ready in season [and] out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all patience and instruction.
Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you; {considering the outcome of their way of life}, imitate their faith.
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name--that one will teach you all [things], and will remind you of everything that I said to you.
"When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father--the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father--that one will testify about me.
I still have many [things] to say to you, but you are not able to bear [them] now. But when he--the Spirit of truth--comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak from himself, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will proclaim to you the things to come. He will glorify me, because he will take from what [is] mine and will proclaim [it] to you.read more.
Everything that the Father has is mine. For this [reason] I said that he takes from what [is] mine and will proclaim [it] to you.
This is the one who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ, not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.
