While Peter was down in the courtyard, one of the high priest's waiting girls came up, and when she saw that Peter was warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You were with Jesus of Nazareth too!" And again a few minutes later the bystanders began to say to Peter, "You are surely one of them, for you are a Galilean too." Then Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, "Before the cock crows twice, you will disown me three times!" And when he remembered that, he burst into tears.

And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had taken their seats together, Peter, too, was sitting among them. A servant girl saw him sitting by the fire and fixed her eyes on him and said, "This fellow was with Him too." But he denied it and said, "I do not know Him, woman."read more.
A little later a man looked at him and said, "You are one of them too." But Peter said, "Man, I am not." About an hour later another man emphatically asserted, "He certainly was with Him, for he is a Galilean!" But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you mean." And all at once, while he was still speaking, a cock crowed. Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter, and Peter was reminded of the word that the Lord had spoken to him, "Before a cock crows today, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and burst into bitter tears.

but Peter stood outside before the door. So this other disciple, who was acquainted with the high priest, stepped out and spoke to the woman doorkeeper and brought Peter in. Then the servant girl at the door said to Peter, "You too are not one of this man's disciples, are you?" He answered, "No, I am not." Because it was cold, the slaves and attendants had made a charcoal fire and were standing about it warming themselves; so Peter too was standing among them warming himself.

But Simon Peter still stood warming himself. So they said to him, "You too are not one of His disciples, are you?" He denied it and said, "No, I am not." One of the high priest's slaves, who was a kinsman of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with Him?" Then Peter again denied it, and at that moment a cock crowed.

When He noticed how the guests were picking out the best places, He told them the following story: "When you are invited by anyone to a wedding supper, never take the best place, for someone of greater distinction than you may have been invited, so that your host may not come and say to you, 'Make room for this man'; and then in embarrassment you will proceed to take and keep the lowest place.read more.
But when you are invited anywhere, go and take the lowest place, so that when your host comes in, he may say to you, 'My friend, come up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow-guests. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted."

So the man who thinks he stands securely must be on the lookout not to fall.

Now this was the passage of Scripture that he was reading: "Like a sheep He was led away to be slaughtered, and just as a lamb is dumb before its shearer, so He does not open His mouth. Justice was denied Him in His humiliation, who can tell of His times? For His life is removed from the earth."

Though He was existing in the nature of God, He did not think His being on an equality with God a thing to be selfishly grasped, but He laid it aside as He took on the nature of a slave and became like other men. Because He was recognized as a man, in reality as well as in outward form, He finally humiliated Himself in obedience so as to die, even to die on a cross.

For by experience you know the unmerited favor shown by our Lord Jesus Christ; that although He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, in order that by His poverty you might become rich.

His kinsmen heard of it and came over to get hold of Him, for they kept saying, "He has gone crazy."

The crowd answered, "You are certainly under the power of a demon! Who is trying to kill you?"

Then some of the Pharisees said, "This man does not come from God, for He does not keep the Sabbath." Others said, "How can a sinful man perform such wonder- works?" So there was a difference of opinion among them.

Then all the people in the synagogue, on hearing these things, were filled with fury, and they rose up and drove Him out of town and took Him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, to hurl Him down the cliff.

And turning face to face with the woman He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came to your house; you did not give me any water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but she, from the moment I came in, has not ceased to kiss my feet with affection. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with perfume.

The high priests and the whole council were trying to get evidence against Jesus to put Him to death, but they could find none, for although many men gave false testimony against Him, their testimonies did not agree. Some took the witness stand and gave this false testimony against Him:read more.
"We ourselves have heard Him say, 'I will tear down this temple built by men's hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.'" But even in this matter their testimony did not agree. Then the high priest arose in the midst and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer to make? What about this testimony they are giving against you?" But He kept silent and made no answer at all. So the high priest again questioned Him in these words, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" Jesus said, "Yes, I am, and you will all see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Almighty and coming in the clouds of the sky!" Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "What more evidence do we need now? Did you hear His own blasphemy? What do you think now?" And they all condemned Him as deserving to die. And some of them started to spit on Him and to blindfold Him and to hit Him with their fists, and say to Him, "Now play the prophet!" Even the attendants took charge of Him with slaps at Him.

Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the barracks, and gathered about Him the whole battalion. Then they stripped Him, and put a purple cloak on Him, and made a crown of thorns and set it on His head, and they put a stick in His hand, and kneeling before Him they made sport of Him, saying, "All hail, you king of the Jews!"read more.
And they spit on Him, and took the stick and kept hitting Him on the head. And when they had finished making sport of Him, they took off the cloak, and put His own clothes back on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.

So the high priest said to Him, "I charge you, on your oath, in the name of the living God, tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God." Jesus answered him, "Yes, I am. But I tell you, you will all soon see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Almighty, and coming on the clouds of the sky." Then the high priest tore his clothes, and said, "He has uttered blasphemy, What more evidence do we need? You have just heard His blasphemy. What do you think now?" Then they answered, "He deserves to die." After that they spit in His face and hit Him with their fists, and others boxed His ears, saying, "Play the prophet, you Christ, and tell us who struck you."

Then the high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching. Jesus answered him, "I have spoken publicly to the world; I have always taught in the synagogues and in the temple where all the Jews are in the habit of meeting, and I have not spoken anything in secret. So why are you questioning me? Ask those who heard what I told them. Of course, they know what I said."read more.
After He had said this, one of the attendants standing by slapped Jesus in the face, and said, "Is this the way you answer the high priest?" Jesus answered him, "If I have said anything wrong, on oath tell what it is, but if what I have said is true, why do you slap me?" So Annas sent Him over, still in handcuffs, to Caiaphas the high priest.

Then he set Barabbas free for them, but had Jesus flogged and turned over to be crucified.

So, as Pilate wanted to satisfy the crowd, he set Barabbas free for them, but after having Jesus flogged, he turned Him over to be crucified.

So he released the man who had been put in prison for riot and murder, whom they continued to demand, but turned Jesus over to their will.

So Pilate then turned Him over to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus,

Then the soldiers led Him away to a place inside the court yard, that is, of the governor's palace, and they called the whole battalion together. And they dressed Him in a purple robe and made a crown of thorns and crowned Him with it, and they began to shout at Him, "All hail, you king of the Jews!"read more.
And they kept hitting Him on the head with a stick, and kept spitting on Him, and on bending knees they kept doing Him homage. When they had finished making sport of Him, they took off the purple robe and put His own clothes on Him. Then they led Him out of the city to crucify Him.

So then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged. And the soldiers made a crown out of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple coat on Him, and kept marching up to Him and saying, "All hail, you king of the Jews!" each one slapping Him on the face.

So he continued to question Him for a long time, but Jesus gave him no answer at all. Meanwhile, the high priests and the scribes stood by and continued vehemently to accuse Him. Then Herod and his bodyguard treated Him with contempt and made sport of Him and put a gorgeous robe on Him and sent Him back to Pilate.

When they reached the place called "The Skull," they crucified Him there; also the criminals, one at His right and one at His left. They drew lots to divide His clothes among them. Meanwhile, the people stood looking on. Even the members of the council were scoffing at Him and saying, "He saved others, let Him now save Himself, if He really is the Christ of God, His Chosen One!"read more.
The soldiers also made sport of Him as they continued to come up and offer Him vinegar, and to say, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!" Yes, there was a placard above His head: "THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS." Now one of the criminals who were hanging from their crosses kept abusing Him, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Then save yourself and us too!" But the other one reproved him and said, "Do you not fear even God when you are suffering the same penalty? And we are suffering it justly, for we are getting our deserts for what we have done, but this man has done nothing wrong." Then he went on to say, "Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingdom!" So He said to him, "I solemnly say to you, this very day you will be in paradise with me."

Christ ransomed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us -- for the Scripture says, "Cursed be everyone who is hanged on a tree" --

For I tell you, what has been written about me must be fulfilled: 'He was classed with the outlaws.' Yes, that saying about me has its fulfillment."

When they came to a place called Golgotha, which means the Place of the Skull, they gave Him some wine mixed with gall, but when He tasted it, He would not drink it. Then they crucified Him and divided among them His clothes by drawing lots,read more.

At the same time two robbers were crucified with Him, one at His right and one at His left. If you are really the Son of God, come down from the cross." And the high priests, too, made sport of Him, with the scribes and elders, and said, "He saved others but He cannot save Himself. He is the king of Israel, is He? Well, let Him come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. He has put His trust in God; let God deliver Him now, if He cares for Him, for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'" Even the robbers who were crucified with Him made sport of Him in the same way.

And they led Him to Golgotha, which means, the Place of the Skull. They offered Him wine flavored with myrrh, but He would not take it. Then they crucified Him and divided among them His clothes, by drawing lots for them to see which piece each of them should have.read more.

and He went out carrying the cross by Himself to a spot called The Place of the Skull, or in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified Him, with two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the middle. Pilate had a placard written and had it put over the cross: "JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS."read more.
Many of the Jews read this placard, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. So the high priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "You must not write, 'The king of the Jews,' but write, 'He said, I am the king of the Jews.'" Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written!" When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took His clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier, except the coat, which was without a seam, woven in one piece from top to bottom, So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but let us draw for it to see who gets it." This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, "They divided my clothes among them, and for my clothing they cast lots." Now this was what the soldiers did.

Yes, indeed, everyone who wants to live a godly life as a follower of Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

"Blessed are you when people abuse you, and persecute you, and keep on falsely telling all sorts of evil against you for my sake.

Be on your guard against men, for they will turn you over to the courts and will flog you in their synagogues, and you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness to them and the heathen.

Remember what I once told you: No slave is greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will persecute you too. If they have observed my teaching, they will observe yours too.

Men will turn you out of their synagogues. Yes, indeed, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think that he is rendering a religious service to God.

Never in the slightest degree be frightened by your opponents, for such fearlessness will be strong evidence to them of their impending destruction, but to you a sure sign, and that from God, of your salvation. For it has been graciously granted to you for Christ's sake, not only to trust in Him but also to suffer for Him, since you are having the same struggle that you once saw me have and which you hear that I am still having.

And you followed the example set by us and by the Lord, because you welcomed our message with a joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, in spite of the painful persecutions it brought you,

partly by being exposed as a public spectacle to insults and violent sufferings, and partly by showing yourselves ready to share with those who were living in this condition. For you showed sympathy with those who were in prison and cheerfully submitted to the violent seizure of your property, for you knew that you had in yourselves and in heaven one that was lasting.

For it is pleasing in the sight of God for one to bear his sorrows though suffering innocently. For what credit is it to bear it patiently, if you do wrong and are beaten for it? But if you do right and patiently suffer for it, it is pleasing in the sight of God. Indeed, it was to this kind of living that you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you might follow His footsteps.

Do not be so afraid of what you are to suffer. See! The devil is going to throw some of you into prison to be tested there and for ten days to suffer pressing troubles. Each one of you must prove to be faithful, even if you have to die, and I will give you the crown of life.

For if a man with a gold ring, dressed in fine clothes, comes to your meeting, and at the same time a poor man clad in dirty clothes, and you pay special attention to the man who wears the fine clothes, and say to him, "Sit here in this fine place," and say to the poor man, "Stand up, or sit there on the floor at my feet," do you not make improper distinctions among yourselves and prove to be critics with evil motives?

But I say to you: "Everyone who harbors malice against his brother, will have to answer to the court, and whoever speaks contemptuously to his brother, will have to answer to the supreme court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You cursed fool? will have to pay the penalty in the pit of torture.

How can you say to your brother, 'Let me get that tiny speck out of your eye,' while all the time there is a girder in your own? You hypocrite, first get the girder out of your own eye, and then you can see well enough to get the tiny speck out of your brother's eye.

So when you hold your meetings, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper, for each of you is in a rush to eat his own supper, and one goes hungry while another gets drunk. It is not that you have no houses to eat and drink in, is it? Or, are you trying to show your contempt for the church of God and trying to humiliate those who have no houses? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? No, I cannot praise you for this.
