'Back' in the Bible

After being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back by another route to their own country.

After he went out, that same slave found one of his fellow slaves who owed him one hundred silver coins. So he grabbed him by the throat and started to choke him, saying, 'Pay back what you owe me!'

and the one in the field must not turn back to get his cloak.

Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received my money back with interest!

Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back in its place! For all who take hold of the sword will die by the sword.

When they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Immediately she hurried back to the king and made her request: "I want the head of John the Baptist on a platter immediately."

Then he left them, got back into the boat, and went to the other side.

If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' say, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here soon.'"

The one in the field must not turn back to get his cloak.

When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled back.

They went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

And he will go as forerunner before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him."

When the angels left them and went back to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, that the Lord has made known to us."

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.

So the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the master of the household was furious and said to his slave, 'Go out quickly to the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.'

The slave replied, 'Your brother has returned, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he got his son back safe and sound.'

But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your assets with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!'

Was no one found to turn back and give praise to God except this foreigner?"

On that day, anyone who is on the roof, with his goods in the house, must not come down to take them away, and likewise the person in the field must not turn back.

Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, dressing him in elegant clothes, Herod sent him back to Pilate.

Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, he has done nothing deserving death.

As they led him away, they seized Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country. They placed the cross on his back and made him carry it behind Jesus.

and when they did not find his body, they came back and said they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.

He said to her, "Go call your husband and come back here."

Now at that very moment his disciples came back. They were shocked because he was speaking with a woman. However, no one said, "What do you want?" or "Why are you speaking with her?"

When he heard that Jesus had come back from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.

Then the officers returned to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why didn't you bring him back with you?"

and said to him, "Go wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "sent"). So the blind man went away and washed, and came back seeing.

No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down of my own free will. I have the authority to lay it down, and I have the authority to take it back again. This commandment I received from my Father."

Jesus went back across the Jordan River again to the place where John had been baptizing at an earlier time, and he stayed there.

Jesus replied, "Your brother will come back to life again."

So when Jesus had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the table again and said to them, "Do you understand what I have done for you?

Then the disciple whom Jesus loved leaned back against Jesus' chest and asked him, "Lord, who is it?"

But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath! Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?"

So Pilate went back into the governor's residence, summoned Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"

Pilate asked, "What is truth?" When he had said this he went back outside to the Jewish leaders and announced, "I find no basis for an accusation against him.

Then they shouted back, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" (Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.)

and he went back into the governor's residence and said to Jesus, "Where do you come from?" But Jesus gave him no answer.

Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them. (This was the disciple who had leaned back against Jesus' chest at the meal and asked, "Lord, who is the one who is going to betray you?")

So the saying circulated among the brothers and sisters that this disciple was not going to die. But Jesus did not say to him that he was not going to die, but rather, "If I want him to live until I come back, what concern is that of yours?"

and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking up into the sky? This same Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will come back in the same way you saw him go into heaven."

He kept back for himself part of the proceeds with his wife's knowledge; he brought only part of it and placed it at the apostles' feet.

Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him, but pushed him aside and turned back to Egypt in their hearts,

So after Peter and John had solemnly testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they started back to Jerusalem, proclaiming the good news to many Samaritan villages as they went.

When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed she did not open the gate, but ran back in and told them that Peter was standing at the gate.

But after the disciples had surrounded him, he got up and went back into the city. On the next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.

but said farewell to them and added, "I will come back to you again if God wills." Then he set sail from Ephesus,

For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree?

and through your help to go on into Macedonia and then from Macedonia to come back to you and be helped on our way into Judea by you.

But now that you have come to know God (or rather to be known by God), how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless basic forces? Do you want to be enslaved to them all over again?

so that what you can be proud of may increase because of me in Christ Jesus, when I come back to you.

And so you know what holds him back, so that he will be revealed in his own time.

For the hidden power of lawlessness is already at work. However, the one who holds him back will do so until he is taken out of the way,

Slaves are to be subject to their own masters in everything, to do what is wanted and not talk back,

I have sent him (who is my very heart) back to you.

For perhaps it was for this reason that he was separated from you for a little while, so that you would have him back eternally,

At the same time also, prepare a place for me to stay, for I hope that through your prayers I will be given back to you.

For though you should in fact be teachers by this time, you need someone to teach you the beginning elements of God's utterances. You have gone back to needing milk, not solid food.

But we are not among those who shrink back and thus perish, but are among those who have faith and preserve their souls.
