It trains us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
Like obedient children, do not comply with the evil urges you used to follow in your ignorance, but, like the Holy One who called you, become holy yourselves in all of your conduct, for it is written, "You shall be holy, because I am holy."
For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries. So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you.
because This is the conquering power that has conquered the world: our faith.
I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them safe in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one.
So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of faith.

For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life?
