'Down' in the Bible
They have now surrounded us in our steps;They set their eyes to cast us down to the ground.
He bowed the heavens also, and came downWith thick darkness under His feet.
They have bowed down and fallen,But we have risen and stood upright.
All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship,All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him,Even he who cannot keep his soul alive.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;He leads me beside quiet waters.
A Psalm of David.To You, O Lord, I call;My rock, do not be deaf to me,For if You are silent to me,I will become like those who go down to the pit.
Because they do not regard the works of the LordNor the deeds of His hands,He will tear them down and not build them up.
O Lord, You have brought up my soul from Sheol;You have kept me alive, that I would not go down to the pit.
“What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the pit?Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your faithfulness?
I went about as though it were my friend or brother;I bowed down mourning, as one who sorrows for a mother.
There the doers of iniquity have fallen;They have been thrust down and cannot rise.
The wicked have drawn the sword and bent their bowTo cast down the afflicted and the needy,To slay those who are upright in conduct.
For Your arrows have sunk deep into me,And Your hand has pressed down on me.
I am bent over and greatly bowed down;I go mourning all day long.
“A wicked thing is poured out upon him,That when he lies down, he will not rise up again.”
Through You we will push back our adversaries;Through Your name we will trample down those who rise up against us.
For our soul has sunk down into the dust;Our body cleaves to the earth.
Then the King will desire your beauty.Because He is your Lord, bow down to Him.
But God will break you down forever;He will snatch you up and tear you away from your tent,And uproot you from the land of the living. Selah.
God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of menTo see if there is anyone who understands,Who seeks after God.
Because of the voice of the enemy,Because of the pressure of the wicked;For they bring down trouble upon meAnd in anger they bear a grudge against me.
Let death come deceitfully upon them;Let them go down alive to Sheol,For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst.
But You, O God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction;Men of bloodshed and deceit will not live out half their days.But I will trust in You.
Because of wickedness, cast them forth,In anger put down the peoples, O God!
They have prepared a net for my steps;My soul is bowed down;They dug a pit before me;They themselves have fallen into the midst of it. Selah.
Do not slay them, or my people will forget;Scatter them by Your power, and bring them down,O Lord, our shield.
Through God we shall do valiantly,And it is He who will tread down our adversaries.
They have counseled only to thrust him down from his high position;They delight in falsehood;They bless with their mouth,But inwardly they curse. Selah.
When you lie down among the sheepfolds,You are like the wings of a dove covered with silver,And its pinions with glistening gold.
May he come down like rain upon the mown grass,Like showers that water the earth.
And let all kings bow down before him,All nations serve him.
Surely You set them in slippery places;You cast them down to destruction.
But God is the Judge;He puts down one and exalts another.
For a cup is in the hand of the Lord, and the wine foams;It is well mixed, and He pours out of this;Surely all the wicked of the earth must drain and drink down its dregs.
He brought forth streams also from the rockAnd caused waters to run down like rivers.
He rained down manna upon them to eatAnd gave them food from heaven.
Why have You broken down its hedges,So that all who pass that way pick its fruit?
O God of hosts, turn again now, we beseech You;Look down from heaven and see, and take care of this vine,
It is burned with fire, it is cut down;They perish at the rebuke of Your countenance.
Truth springs from the earth,And righteousness looks down from heaven.
I am reckoned among those who go down to the pit;I have become like a man without strength,
You have broken down all his walls;You have brought his strongholds to ruin.
You will tread upon the lion and cobra,The young lion and the serpent you will trample down.
Come, let us worship and bow down,Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For He looked down from His holy height;From heaven the Lord gazed upon the earth,
The mountains rose; the valleys sank downTo the place which You established for them.
When the sun rises they withdrawAnd lie down in their dens.
He struck down their vines also and their fig trees,And shattered the trees of their territory.
He also struck down all the firstborn in their land,The first fruits of all their vigor.
Therefore He swore to themThat He would cast them down in the wilderness,
Many times He would deliver them;They, however, were rebellious in their counsel,And so sank down in their iniquity.
Those who go down to the sea in ships,Who do business on great waters;
They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;Their soul melted away in their misery.
When they are diminished and bowed downThrough oppression, misery and sorrow,
Through God we will do valiantly,And it is He who shall tread down our adversaries.
The dead do not praise the Lord,Nor do any who go down into silence;
It is like the precious oil upon the head,Coming down upon the beard,Even Aaron’s beard,Coming down upon the edge of his robes.

By the rivers of Babylon,There we sat down and wept,When we remembered Zion.
I will bow down toward Your holy templeAnd give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth;For You have magnified Your word according to all Your name.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;You understand my thought from afar.

For her house sinks down to deathAnd her tracks lead to the dead;
When you lie down, you will not be afraid;When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Her feet go down to death,Her steps take hold of Sheol.
How long will you lie down, O sluggard?When will you arise from your sleep?
For many are the victims she has cast down,And numerous are all her slain.
The wise of heart will receive commands,But a babbling fool will be ruined.
He who winks the eye causes trouble,And a babbling fool will be ruined.
By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,But by the mouth of the wicked it is torn down.
Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down,But a good word makes it glad.
The wise woman builds her house,But the foolish tears it down with her own hands.
The evil will bow down before the good,And the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
The wicked is thrust down by his wrongdoing,But the righteous has a refuge when he dies.
The Lord will tear down the house of the proud,But He will establish the boundary of the widow.
The words of a whisperer are like dainty morsels,And they go down into the innermost parts of the body.
A wise man scales the city of the mightyAnd brings down the stronghold in which they trust.
When you sit down to dine with a ruler,Consider carefully what is before you,
Do not look on the wine when it is red,When it sparkles in the cup,When it goes down smoothly;
And you will be like one who lies down in the middle of the sea,Or like one who lies down on the top of a mast.
And behold, it was completely overgrown with thistles;Its surface was covered with nettles,And its stone wall was broken down.
Like the legs which are useless to the lame,So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
For lack of wood the fire goes out,And where there is no whisperer, contention quiets down.
The words of a whisperer are like dainty morsels,And they go down into the innermost parts of the body.
A time to kill and a time to heal;A time to tear down and a time to build up.
Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone?
