'Down' in the Bible

After this I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrifying and extremely strong; and it had large iron teeth. It devoured and crushed and trampled down the remainder with its feet; and it was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns.

“Then I desired to know the exact meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its claws of bronze, and which devoured, crushed and trampled down the remainder with its feet,

“Thus he said: ‘The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it.

He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time.

It grew up to the host of heaven and caused some of the host and some of the stars to fall to the earth, and it trampled them down.

It even magnified itself to be equal with the Commander of the host; and it removed the regular sacrifice from Him, and the place of His sanctuary was thrown down.

“Now in those times many will rise up against the king of the South; the violent ones among your people will also lift themselves up in order to fulfill the vision, but they will fall down.

Those who eat his choice food will destroy him, and his army will overflow, but many will fall down slain.

“In that day I will also make a covenant for themWith the beasts of the field,The birds of the skyAnd the creeping things of the ground.And I will abolish the bow, the sword and war from the land,And will make them lie down in safety.

When they go, I will spread My net over them;I will bring them down like the birds of the sky.I will chastise them in accordance with the proclamation to their assembly.

Their heart is faithless;Now they must bear their guilt.The Lord will break down their altarsAnd destroy their sacred pillars.

I led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love,And I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws;And I bent down and fed them.

The seeds shrivel under their clods;The storehouses are desolate,The barns are torn down,For the grain is dried up.

So rejoice, O sons of Zion,And be glad in the Lord your God;For He has given you the early rain for your vindication.And He has poured down for you the rain,The early and latter rain as before.

I will gather all the nationsAnd bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat.Then I will enter into judgment with them thereOn behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel,Whom they have scattered among the nations;And they have divided up My land.

Hasten and come, all you surrounding nations,And gather yourselves there.Bring down, O Lord, Your mighty ones.

“Behold, I am weighted down beneath youAs a wagon is weighted down when filled with sheaves.

Therefore, thus says the Lord God,“An enemy, even one surrounding the land,Will pull down your strength from youAnd your citadels will be looted.”

For those who turn justice into wormwoodAnd cast righteousness down to the earth.”

“But let justice roll down like watersAnd righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Go over to Calneh and look,And go from there to Hamath the great,Then go down to Gath of the Philistines.Are they better than these kingdoms,Or is their territory greater than yours?

“It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord God,“That I will make the sun go down at noonAnd make the earth dark in broad daylight.

“Though they dig into Sheol,From there will My hand take them;And though they ascend to heaven,From there will I bring them down.

“The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,You who live in the clefts of the rock,In the loftiness of your dwelling place,Who say in your heart,‘Who will bring me down to earth?’

“Though you build high like the eagle,Though you set your nest among the stars,From there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.

“Do not stand at the fork of the roadTo cut down their fugitives;And do not imprison their survivorsIn the day of their distress.

But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

Then the sailors became afraid and every man cried to his god, and they threw the cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone below into the hold of the ship, lain down and fallen sound asleep.

“So also I will make you sick, striking you down,Desolating you because of your sins.

Then my enemy will see,And shame will cover her who said to me,“Where is the Lord your God?”My eyes will look on her;At that time she will be trampled downLike mire of the streets.

There fire will consume you,The sword will cut you down;It will consume you as the locust does.Multiply yourself like the creeping locust,Multiply yourself like the swarming locust.

Your shepherds are sleeping, O king of Assyria;Your nobles are lying down.Your people are scattered on the mountainsAnd there is no one to regather them.

“Their horses are swifter than leopardsAnd keener than wolves in the evening.Their horsemen come galloping,Their horsemen come from afar;They fly like an eagle swooping down to devour.

“And those who bow down on the housetops to the host of heaven,And those who bow down and swear to the Lord and yet swear by Milcom,

And the coast will beFor the remnant of the house of Judah,They will pasture on it.In the houses of Ashkelon they will lie down at evening;For the Lord their God will care for themAnd restore their fortune.

The Lord will be terrifying to them, for He will starve all the gods of the earth; and all the coastlands of the nations will bow down to Him, everyone from his own place.

Flocks will lie down in her midst,All beasts which range in herds;Both the pelican and the hedgehogWill lodge in the tops of her pillars;Birds will sing in the window,Desolation will be on the threshold;For He has laid bare the cedar work.

“The remnant of Israel will do no wrongAnd tell no lies,Nor will a deceitful tongueBe found in their mouths;For they will feed and lie downWith no one to make them tremble.”

I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots and their riders, and the horses and their riders will go down, everyone by the sword of another.’

I said, “What are these coming to do?” And he said, “These are the horns which have scattered Judah so that no man lifts up his head; but these craftsmen have come to terrify them, to throw down the horns of the nations who have lifted up their horns against the land of Judah in order to scatter it.”

Then he said, “This is Wickedness!” And he threw her down into the middle of the ephah and cast the lead weight on its opening.

“They will be as mighty men,Treading down the enemy in the mire of the streets in battle;And they will fight, for the Lord will be with them;And the riders on horses will be put to shame.

“And they will pass through the sea of distressAnd He will strike the waves in the sea,So that all the depths of the Nile will dry up;And the pride of Assyria will be brought downAnd the scepter of Egypt will depart.

Wail, O cypress, for the cedar has fallen,Because the glorious trees have been destroyed;Wail, O oaks of Bashan,For the impenetrable forest has come down.

Though Edom says, “We have been beaten down, but we will return and build up the ruins”; thus says the Lord of hosts, “They may build, but I will tear down; and men will call them the wicked territory, and the people toward whom the Lord is indignant forever.”

You will tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day which I am preparing,” says the Lord of hosts.

The axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

and *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written,‘He will command His angels concerning You’;and‘On their hands they will bear You up,So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.”

And a leper came to Him and bowed down before Him, and said, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”

And He said to them, “Go!” And they came out and went into the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the waters.

While He was saying these things to them, a synagogue official came and bowed down before Him, and said, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will live.”

And large crowds gathered to Him, so He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd was standing on the beach.

and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away.

But she came and began to bow down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”

And large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He healed them.

And He directed the people to sit down on the ground;

As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”

So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.’

So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will repay you.’

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making a request of Him.

so also the second, and the third, down to the seventh.

And He said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.”

Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, ‘I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered.’

But Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the officers to see the outcome.

And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there.

and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”

“He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.

And he was preaching, and saying, “After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals.

Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying.

Whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, “You are the Son of God!”

He began to teach again by the sea. And such a very large crowd gathered to Him that He got into a boat in the sea and sat down; and the whole crowd was by the sea on the land.

Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea.

They *came to Jesus and *observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the “legion”; and they became frightened.

But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.

thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

And He *directed the people to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve to them, and they served them to the people.

As they were coming down from the mountain, He gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose from the dead.

And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums.

And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another which will not be torn down.”

The one who is on the housetop must not go down, or go in to get anything out of his house;
