'First' in the Bible

Hypocrite! First remove the beam of wood from your [own] eye and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye!

Now these are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, James the [son] of Zebedee, and John his brother,

Or how can someone enter into the house of a strong [man] and steal his property, unless he first ties up the strong [man]? And then he can thoroughly plunder his house.

And the disciples asked him, saying, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

He said, "Yes." And [when he] came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect tolls or taxes--from their own sons, or from foreigners?"

But so that we do not give offense to them, go out to the sea, cast [a line with] a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. And [when you] open its mouth, you will find a four-drachma coin. Take that [and] give [it] to them for me and you."

And [when] evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning from the last up to the first.'

And [when] the first came, they thought that they would receive more, and they also received a denarius apiece.

"Now what do you think? A man had two sons. [He] approached the first [and] said, 'Son, go work in the vineyard today.'

Which of the two did the will of [his] father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going ahead of you into the kingdom of God!

Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first [ones], and they did the same [thing] to them.

Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.

Now on the first [day] of the feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came up to Jesus, saying, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?"

Therefore give orders that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples come [and] steal him and tell the people, 'He has been raised from the dead,' and the last deception will be worse than the first."

But no one is able to enter into the house of a strong [man] [and] plunder his property unless he first ties up the strong [man], and then he can thoroughly plunder his house.

By itself the soil produces a crop: first the grass, then the head of grain, then the full grain in the head.

And he said to her, "Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw [it] to the dogs!"

And they asked him, saying, "{Why do} the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

And he said to them, "Elijah indeed does come first [and] restores all [things]. And how is it written concerning the Son of Man that he should suffer many [things] and be treated with contempt?

There were seven brothers, and the first took a wife. And [when he] died, he did not leave descendants.

And on the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, "Where do you want us to go [and] prepare, so that you can eat the Passover?"

And very early in the morning on the first [day] of the week they came to the tomb [after] the sun had risen.

How are you able to say to your brother, "Brother, allow [me] to remove the speck [that is] in your eye," [while] you yourself do not see the beam of wood in your [own] eye? Hypocrite! First remove the beam of wood from your [own] eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck [that is] in your brother's eye!

And he said to another, "Follow me!" But he said, "Lord, first allow me to go [and] bury my father."

And another [person] also said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first allow me to say farewell to those in my house."

Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and [they] go in [and] live there. And the last [state] of that person becomes worse than the first!"

And the Pharisee, [when he] saw [it], was astonished that he did not first wash before the meal.

During {this time} [when] a crowd of many thousands had gathered together, so that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, "Beware for yourselves of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

And behold, [some] are last who will be first, and [some] are first who will be last."

And they all {alike} began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, 'I have purchased a field, and {I must} go out to look at it. I ask you, consider me excused.'

Or what king, going out to engage another king in battle, does not sit down first [and] deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand.

And he summoned each one of his own master's debtors [and] said to the first, 'How much do you owe my master?'

But first it is necessary [for] him to suffer many [things], and to be rejected by this generation.

So the first arrived, saying, 'Sir, your mina has made ten minas more!'

And when you hear about wars and insurrections, do not be terrified, for these [things] must happen first, but the end [will] not [be] at once."

Now on the first [day] of the week, at very early dawn, they came back to the tomb bringing the fragrant spices which they had prepared.

This one first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which is translated "Christ").

and said to him, "{Everyone} serves the good wine first, and whenever they are drunk, the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!"

"Our law does not condemn a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, [does it]?"

And when they persisted in asking him, straightening up he said to them, "The [one] of you without sin, let him throw the first stone at her!"

(His disciples did not understand these [things] at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these [things] had been written about him and they did these [things] to him.)

and brought [him] to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him.

Now on the first [day] of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, [while it] was still dark, and saw the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

And the two were running together, and the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came to the tomb first.

So then the other disciple who had come to the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed.

Now [when it] was evening on that day--the first [day] of the week--and the doors had been shut where the disciples were because of fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace to you."

God, [after he] had raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning each [of you] back from your wickedness!"

So [when] Jacob heard [there] was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

And [when he] found [him], he brought [him] to Antioch. And it happened to them also [that they] met together [for] a whole year with the church and taught a large number [of people]. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.

And [after they] had passed the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads to the city, which opened for them by itself, and they went out [and] went forward [along] one narrow street, and at once the angel departed from him.

Both Paul and Barnabas spoke boldly [and] said, "It was necessary [that] the word of God be spoken first to you, since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life! Behold, we are turning to the Gentiles!

Simeon has described how God first concerned himself to take from among the Gentiles a people for his name.
