'Sabbath' in the Bible

He told them, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Tomorrow is a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you want to bake, and boil what you want to boil, and set aside everything left over to be kept until morning.’”

“Eat it today,” Moses said, “because today is a Sabbath to the Lord. Today you won’t find any in the field.

For six days you may gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none.”

Understand that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day He will give you two days’ worth of bread. Each of you stay where you are; no one is to leave his place on the seventh day.”

but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You must not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the foreigner who is within your gates.

Observe the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Whoever profanes it must be put to death. If anyone does work on it, that person must be cut off from his people.

Work may be done for six days, but on the seventh day there must be a Sabbath of complete rest, dedicated to the Lord. Anyone who does work on the Sabbath day must be put to death.

The Israelites must observe the Sabbath, celebrating it throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.

For six days work is to be done, but on the seventh day you are to have a holy day, a Sabbath of complete rest to the Lord. Anyone who does work on it must be executed.

Do not light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath day.”

It is a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you must practice self-denial; it is a permanent statute.

“Work may be done for six days, but on the seventh day there must be a Sabbath of complete rest, a sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; it is a Sabbath to the Lord wherever you live.

He will wave the sheaf before the Lord so that you may be accepted; the priest is to wave it on the day after the Sabbath.

“You are to count seven complete weeks starting from the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the presentation offering.

You are to count 50 days until the day after the seventh Sabbath and then present an offering of new grain to the Lord.

It will be a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you must practice self-denial. You are to observe your Sabbath from the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening.”

The bread is to be set out before the Lord every Sabbath day as a perpetual covenant obligation on the part of the Israelites.

“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When you enter the land I am giving you, the land will observe a Sabbath to the Lord.

But there will be a Sabbath of complete rest for the land in the seventh year, a Sabbath to the Lord: you are not to sow your field or prune your vineyard.

Whatever the land produces during the Sabbath year can be food for you—for yourself, your male or female slave, and the hired hand or foreigner who stays with you.

“Then the land will make up for its Sabbath years during the time it lies desolate, while you are in the land of your enemies. At that time the land will rest and make up for its Sabbaths.

While the Israelites were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day.

It is the burnt offering for every Sabbath, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.

Be careful to remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy as the Lord your God has commanded you.

but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You must not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, your ox or donkey, any of your livestock, or the foreigner who lives within your gates, so that your male and female slaves may rest as you do.

Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out of there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. That is why the Lord your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

But he said, “Why go to him today? It’s not a New Moon or a Sabbath.”She replied, “Everything is all right.”

and commanded them, “This is what you are to do: a third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath are to provide protection for the king’s palace.

“Your two divisions that go off duty on the Sabbath are to provide protection for the Lord’s temple.

So the commanders of hundreds did everything Jehoiada the priest commanded. They each brought their men—those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty—and went to Jehoiada the priest.

To satisfy the king of Assyria, he removed from the Lord’s temple the Sabbath canopy they had built in the palace, and he closed the outer entrance for the king.

Some of the Kohathites’ relatives were responsible for preparing the rows of the bread of the Presence every Sabbath.

This is what you are to do: a third of you, priests and Levites who are coming on duty on the Sabbath, are to be gatekeepers.

The Tyrians living there were importing fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah in Jerusalem.

I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them: “What is this evil you are doing—profaning the Sabbath day?

Didn’t your ancestors do the same, so that our God brought all this disaster on us and on this city? And now you are rekindling His anger against Israel by profaning the Sabbath!”

When shadows began to fall on the gates of Jerusalem just before the Sabbath, I gave orders that the gates be closed and not opened until after the Sabbath. I posted some of my men at the gates, so that no goods could enter during the Sabbath day.

but I warned them, “Why are you camping in front of the wall? If you do it again, I’ll use force against you.” After that they did not come again on the Sabbath.

Then I instructed the Levites to purify themselves and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy.Remember me for this also, my God, and look on me with compassion in keeping with Your abundant, faithful love.

Happy is the man who does this,anyone who maintains this,who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it,and keeps his hand from doing any evil.

And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lordminister to Him, love the name of Yahwehand become His servants,all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating itand who hold firmly to My covenant—

“If you keep from desecrating the Sabbath,from doing whatever you want on My holy day;if you call the Sabbath a delight,and the holy day of the Lord honorable;if you honor it, not going your own ways,seeking your own pleasure, or talking too much;

This is what the Lord says: Watch yourselves; do not pick up a load and bring it in through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day.

You must not carry a load out of your houses on the Sabbath day or do any work, but you must consecrate the Sabbath day, just as I commanded your ancestors.

“However, if you listen to Me, says the Lord, and do not bring loads through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day and consecrate the Sabbath day and do no work on it,

If you do not listen to Me to consecrate the Sabbath day by not carrying a load while entering the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, I will set fire to its gates, and it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem and not be extinguished.”

“This is what the Lord God says: The gate of the inner court that faces east must be closed during the six days of work, but it will be opened on the Sabbath day and opened on the day of the New Moon.

“The burnt offering that the prince presents to the Lord on the Sabbath day is to be six unblemished lambs and an unblemished ram.

“When the prince makes a freewill offering, whether a burnt offering or a fellowship offering as a freewill offering to the Lord, the gate that faces east must be opened for him. He is to offer his burnt offering or fellowship offering just as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he will go out, and the gate must be closed after he leaves.

asking, “When will the New Moon be overso we may sell grain,and the Sabbath,so we may market wheat?We can reduce the measurewhile increasing the priceand cheat with dishonest scales.

At that time Jesus passed through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick and eat some heads of grain.

But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!”

Or haven’t you read in the Law that on Sabbath days the priests in the temple violate the Sabbath and are innocent?

For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

There He saw a man who had a paralyzed hand. And in order to accuse Him they asked Him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”

But He said to them, “What man among you, if he had a sheep that fell into a pit on the Sabbath, wouldn’t take hold of it and lift it out?

Then they went into Capernaum, and right away He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach.

On the Sabbath He was going through the grainfields, and His disciples began to make their way picking some heads of grain.

The Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

In order to accuse Him, they were watching Him closely to see whether He would heal him on the Sabbath.

When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these things?” they said. “What is this wisdom given to Him, and how are these miracles performed by His hands?

When it was already evening, because it was preparation day (that is, the day before the Sabbath),

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so they could go and anoint Him.

He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As usual, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read.

Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbath.

On a Sabbath, He passed through the grainfields. His disciples were picking heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.

But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching. A man was there whose right hand was paralyzed.

Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do what is good or to do what is evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

As He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath,

But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, responded by telling the crowd, “There are six days when work should be done; therefore come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath day.”

But the Lord answered him and said, “Hypocrites! Doesn’t each one of you untie his ox or donkey from the feeding trough on the Sabbath and lead it to water?

In response, Jesus asked the law experts and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”

And to them, He said, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a well, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?”

It was preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk.Now that day was the Sabbath,

so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Sabbath! It’s illegal for you to pick up your mat.”

Therefore, the Jews began persecuting Jesus because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.

This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill Him: Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
