A History Lesson From Israel

1 For I would not have you forget, brothers, that though our forefathers were all protected by the cloud, and all passed safely through the sea,

1 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

1 For (A)I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all (B)under the cloud and all (C)passed through the sea;

1 Now I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers(A) were all under the cloud,(B) all passed through the sea,(C)

1 Now I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the fact that all of our ancestors who left Egypt were under the cloud. They all went through the sea,

Instructions For Public Worship

2 and in the cloud and the sea all, as it were, accepted baptism as followers of Moses,

2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

2 and all were (D)baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

2 and all were baptized(D) into Moses(E) in the cloud and in the sea.

2 and they all were immersed into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

3 and all ate the same supernatural food

3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

3 and all (E)ate the same spiritual food;

3 They all ate the same spiritual food,(F)

3 They all ate the same spiritual food

4 and drank the same supernatural drink??for they used to drink from a supernatural rock which attended them, and the rock was really Christ??5 still most of them disappointed God, for they were struck down in the desert.

4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

4 and all (F)drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was (a)Christ.

4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from a spiritual rock(G) that followed them, and that rock was Christ.(H)

4 and drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from the spiritual rock that went with them. That rock was the Messiah.

5 Now these things happened to warn us, so that we should not long for what is evil as they did.

5 But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for (G)they were laid low in the wilderness.

5 But God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.(I)

5 But God wasn't pleased with most of those people, and so they were struck down in the wilderness.

6 You must not become idolaters, like some of them, for the Scripture says, "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to dance."

6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

6 Now these things happened as (H)examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as (I)they also craved.

6 Now these things became examples for us, so that we will not desire(J) evil things as they did.(a)(K)

6 Now their experiences serve as examples for us so that we won't set our hearts on evil as they did.

7 Let us not practice immorality, like some of them, twenty-three thousand of whom fell dead in one day,

7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

7 Do not be (J)idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, “(K)The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to (L)play.”

7 Don’t become idolaters(L) as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to play.(b)(M)(c)

7 Let's stop being idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to play."

8 Let us not try the Lord's patience too far, as some of them did, for they were killed for it by the snakes.

8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

8 Nor let us act immorally, as (M)some of them (b)did, and (N)twenty-three thousand fell in one day.

8 Let us not commit sexual immorality(N) as some of them did,(d) and in a single day 23,000 people fell dead.(O)

8 Let's stop sinning sexually, as some of them were doing, and on a single day 23,000 fell dead.

9 You must not grumble, as some of them did, for they were destroyed for it by the destroying angel.

9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

9 Nor let us try the Lord, as (O)some of them (c)did, and were destroyed by the serpents.

9 Let us not test Christ as some of them did(e) and were destroyed by snakes.(P)

9 Let's stop putting the Lord to the test, as some of them were doing, and were destroyed by snakes.

10 These things happened to them as a warning to others, but they were written down to instruct us, in whose days the ages have reached their climax.

10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.

10 Nor (P)grumble, as some of them (d)did, and (Q)were destroyed by the (R)destroyer.

10 Nor should we complain(Q) as some of them did,(f)(R) and were killed by the destroyer.(g)(S)

10 You must stop complaining, as some of them were doing, and were annihilated by the destroyer.

11 So the man who thinks he can stand must be on his guard against a fall.

11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

11 Now these things happened to them as an (S)example, and (T)they were written for our instruction, upon whom (U)the ends of the ages have come.

11 Now these things happened to them as examples, and they were written as a warning to us,(T) on whom the ends of the ages(U) have come.(V)

11 These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down as a warning for us in whom the culmination of the ages has been attained.

12 It is no superhuman temptation that you have had. And God can be depended on, not to let you be tried beyond your strength, but when temptation comes, to give you a way out of it, so that you can withstand it.

12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

12 Therefore let him who (V)thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.

12 So, whoever thinks he stands must be careful not to fall.(W)

12 Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing securely should watch out so he doesn't fall.

Warning Against Idolatry

13 Therefore, my dear brothers, have nothing to do with the worship of idols.

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and (W)God is faithful, who will not allow you to be (X)tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful,(X) and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape(Y) so that you are able to bear it.

13 No temptation has overtaken you that is unusual for human beings. But God is faithful, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. Instead, along with the temptation he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to endure it.

14 I appeal to your good sense. Make up your minds about what I say.

14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

14 Therefore, my (Y)beloved, flee from (Z)idolatry.

14 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.

14 And so, my dear friends, keep on running away from idolatry.

15 Does not the consecrated cup which we bless mean that in drinking it we share in the blood of Christ? Does not the bread that we break mean that in eating it we share in the body of Christ?

15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

15 I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say.

15 I am speaking as to wise people. Judge for yourselves what I say.

15 I am talking to sensible people. Apply what I am saying to yourselves.

Order At The Lord's Supper

16 Because there is one loaf, we, many as we are, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.

16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

16 Is not the (AA)cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the (e)(AB)bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ?

16 The cup(Z) of blessing(AA) that we give thanks for, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread(AB) that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ?

16 The cup of blessing that we bless is our fellowship in the blood of the Messiah, isn't it? The bread that we break is our fellowship in the body of the Messiah, isn't it?

17 Think of the Israelites' practices. Do not those who eat what is sacrificed have divine fellowship at the sacrificial altar?

17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

17 Since there is one (f)bread, we (AC)who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one (g)bread.

17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one(AC) body, for all of us share that one bread.

17 Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body, because all of us eat from the same loaf.

18 What am I saying then? That there is any such thing as being offered to an idol, or any such thing as an idol?

18 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

18 Look at (h)the nation (AD)Israel; are not those who (AE)eat the sacrifices sharers in the altar?

18 Look at the people of Israel.(h) Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in what is offered on the altar?(AD)

18 Look at the Israelis from a human point of view. Those who eat the sacrifices share in what is on the altar, don't they?

19 No, but that what the heathen sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons.

19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

19 What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or (AF)that an idol is anything?

19 What am I saying then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?

19 Am I suggesting that an offering made to idols means anything, or that an idol itself means anything?

20 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot eat at the table of the Lord and at the table of demons.

20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

20 No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they (AG)sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons.

20 No, but I do say that what they(i) sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. I do not want you to participate with demons!

20 Hardly! What they offer, they offer to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to become partners with demons.

21 Or are we trying to arouse the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he is?

21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

21 (AH)You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and (AI)the table of demons.

21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot share in the Lord’s table and the table of demons.

21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot dine with the Lord and dine with demons,

Freedom In Christ

22 We are free to do anything, but not everything is good for us. We are free to do anything, but not everything builds up character.

22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

22 Or do we (AJ)provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not (AK)stronger than He, are we?

22 Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?(AE)

22 or you'll provoke the Lord to jealousy, won't you? Are we stronger than he is?

23 No one should look after his own advantage but after that of his neighbor.

23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

23 (AL)All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things (AM)edify.

23 “Everything is permissible,”(j)(k) but not everything is helpful. “Everything is permissible,”(l) but not everything builds up.

23 Everything is permissible, but not everything is helpful. Everything is permissible, but not everything builds up.

24 Eat anything for sale in the meat market without raising any question, as far as conscience is concerned,

24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.

24 Let no one (AN)seek his own good, but that of his (i)neighbor.

24 No one should seek his own good, but the good of the other person.(AF)

24 No one should seek his own welfare, but rather his neighbor's.

25 for the earth and everything in it belongs to the Lord.

25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:

25 (AO)Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience’ sake;

25 Eat everything that is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake,

25 Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without raising any question about it on the grounds of conscience,

26 If one of the heathen invites you to his house, and you wish to go, eat whatever is served, without raising any question, as far as conscience is concerned.

26 For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

26 (AP)for the earth is the Lord’s, and (j)all it contains.

26 for the earth is the Lord’s,(AG) and all that is in it.(AH)(m)

26 for "the earth and everything in it belong to the Lord."

27 But if someone says to you, "This meat has been offered in sacrifice," let it alone, on account of the man who told you and his conscientious scruples;

27 If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

27 If (AQ)one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, (AR)eat anything that is set before you without asking questions for conscience’ sake.

27 If one of the unbelievers invites you over and you want to go, eat everything that is set before you, without raising questions of conscience.

27 If an unbeliever invites you to his house and you wish to go, eat whatever is set before you, raising no question on the grounds of conscience.

28 his scruples, I say, not yours. For why should my liberty of action be limited by another's scruples?

28 But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

28 But (AS)if anyone says to you, “This is meat sacrificed to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience’ sake;

28 But if someone says to you, “This is food offered to an idol,” do not eat it,(AI) out of consideration for the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake.(n)

28 However, if someone says to you, "This was offered as a sacrifice," don't eat it, both out of consideration for the one who told you and also for the sake of conscience.

29 If I give thanks for what I eat, why should I be denounced for eating what I give thanks over?

29 Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?

29 I mean not your own conscience, but the other man’s; for (AT)why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience?

29 I do not mean your own conscience, but the other person’s. For why is my freedom judged(AJ) by another person’s conscience?

29 I mean, of course, his conscience, not yours. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else's conscience?

30 So whether you are eating or drinking or doing anything else, do it all to the honor of God.

30 For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?

30 If I partake with thankfulness, (AU)why am I slandered concerning that for which I (AV)give thanks?

30 If I partake with thanks,(AK) why am I slandered because of something I give thanks for?

30 If I eat with thankfulness, why should I be denounced because of what I am thankful for?

31 You must not be hindrances to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God either,

31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

31 Whether, then, you eat or drink or (AW)whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for God’s glory.(AL)

31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

32 just as I for my part try to please everyone in all I do, not aiming at my own advantage, but at that of people generally, in order that they may be saved.

32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

32 (AX)Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to (AY)the church of God;

32 Give no offense(AM) to the Jews or the Greeks or the church of God,

32 Don't become a stumbling block to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God,
