Immoral Behavior And Church Discipline

1 It has actually been reported [to me] that there is a case of sexual immorality among you that is unheard of, even among the [unconverted] Gentiles. One of you is having sex with his stepmother.

1 It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has (A)his father’s wife.

1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.

1 It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality(A) among you, and the kind of sexual immorality that is not even tolerated(a) among the Gentiles(B)—a man is living with his father’s wife.(C)

1 It is actually reported that sexual immorality exists among you, and of a kind that is not found even among the gentiles. A man is actually living with his father's wife!

2 And you are arrogant [about it] instead [of being ashamed]. Should you not be grieved to the point of removing from your fellowship the person who has done this [terrible] deed?

2 (a)You (B)have become (b)arrogant and (c)have not (C)mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be (D)removed from your midst.

2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

2 And you are inflated with pride, instead of filled with grief(D) so that he who has committed this act might be removed from your congregation.

2 And you are being arrogant instead of being filled with grief and seeing to it that the man who did this is removed from among you.

3 For although physically absent [from you], I am truly present with you in spirit and have already judged the person who did this [terrible] thing, just as if I were there [in person].

3 For I, on my part, though (E)absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present.

3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

3 For though I am absent in body but present in spirit,(E) I have already decided about the one who has done this thing as though I were present.

3 Even though I am away from you physically, I am with you in spirit. I have already passed judgment on the man who did this, as though I were present with you.

4 [I command you], when you people are assembled together, with my spirit [also present], in the name [i.e., by the authority] and power of our Lord Jesus,

4 (F)In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and (d)I with you in spirit, (G)with the power of our Lord Jesus,

4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

4 When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus with my spirit and with the power of our Lord Jesus,

4 In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are gathered together (and I am there in spirit), and the power of our Lord Jesus is there, too,

5 to turn such a person over to Satan for his body to be destroyed [Note: This probably refers to his removal from their fellowship. See verse 2], in order for his spirit to be saved in the day of the Lord [i.e., the judgment day]. [Note: This implies that his removal from their fellowship will have produced a genuine repentance before that time].

5 I have decided to (H)deliver such a one to (I)Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in (J)the day of the Lord (e)Jesus.

5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

5 turn that one over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh,(F) so that his spirit may be saved in the Day of the Lord.(G)

5 turn this man over to Satan for the destruction of his body, so that his spirit may be saved on the Day of the Lord.

6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little yeast can leaven the whole batch of dough?

6 (K)Your boasting is not good. (L)Do you not know that (M)a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough?

6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast(H) permeates the whole batch of dough?(I)

6 Your boasting is not good. You know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough, don't you?

7 Get rid of the old yeast [i.e., of sin, and especially the unrepentant sinner], so that you can be a new batch of dough, without yeast in it [i.e., a godly church without unrepentant sinners in it] as [I know] you really are. For our Passover [Lamb], Christ, has already been sacrificed.

7 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our (N)Passover also has been sacrificed.

7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

7 Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch. You are indeed unleavened, for Christ our Passover(J) has been sacrificed.(b)

7 Get rid of the old yeast so that you may be a new batch of dough, since you are to be free from yeast. For the Messiah, our Passover, has been sacrificed.

8 So, we should observe the Festival [i.e., live the Christian life], but not with the old yeast [i.e., old sinful ways], such as the leavening [effect] of evil and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

8 Therefore let us celebrate the feast, (O)not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

8 Therefore, let us observe the feast, not with old yeast or with the yeast of malice and evil(K) but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

8 So let's keep celebrating the festival, neither with old yeast nor with yeast that is evil and wicked, but with yeast-free bread that is both sincere and true.

Church Discipline

9 I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people.

9 I wrote you in my letter (P)not to associate with immoral people;

9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

9 I wrote to you in a letter not to associate(L) with sexually immoral people.(M)

9 I wrote to you in my letter to stop associating with people who are sexually immoral

10 I did not mean the sexually immoral people of this world, or with greedy people and swindlers, or with idolaters. For [to do this] you would have to go out of the world. [Note: If taken literally, this implies that there are no sinful people outside our planet].

10 I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with (Q)idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world.

10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

10 I did not mean the immoral people of this world or the greedy(N) and swindlers(O) or idolaters; otherwise you would have to leave the world.(P)

10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, greedy, robbers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.

11 But I wrote to you not to associate with anyone claiming to be a [Christian] brother who is [guilty of being] sexually immoral, or greedy, or an idolater, or who speaks abusively, or a drunkard, or a swindler. Do not even eat [a social meal] with such a person.

11 But (f)actually, I wrote to you not to associate (g)with any so-called (R)brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or (S)an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a one.

11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

11 But now I am writing(c) you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer(d)(Q) who is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard(R) or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person.

11 But now I am writing to you to stop associating with any so-called brother if he is sexually immoral, greedy, an idolater, a slanderer, a drunk, or a robber. You must even stop eating with someone like that.

12 (OMITTED TEXT)

12 For what have I to do with judging (T)outsiders? (U)Do you not judge those who are within the church?

12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?

12 For what business is it of mine to judge(S) outsiders? Don’t you judge those who are inside?

12 After all, is it my business to judge outsiders? You are to judge those who are in the community, aren't you?

13 For what business is it of mine to judge outsiders? [i.e., non-Christians]; God judges them. But should you not judge those people who are inside? [i.e., Christians]. [So], remove the evil person from your fellowship [See Deut. 17:7].

13 But those who are outside, God (h)judges. (V)Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.

13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

13 But God judges outsiders. Put away the evil person from among yourselves.(T)(e)

13 God will judge outsiders. "Expel that wicked man."
