Chosen As Living Stones

1 So get rid of all evil and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.

1 Therefore, (A)putting aside all (a)malice and all deceit and (b)hypocrisy and (c)envy and all (d)(B)slander,

1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

1 So rid yourselves of(A) all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander.(B)

1 Therefore, rid yourselves of every kind of evil and deception, hypocrisy, jealousy, and every kind of slander.

2 And yearn like newborn infants for pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up to salvation,

2 (C)like newborn babies, long for the (e)(D)pure (f)milk of the word, so that by it you may (E)grow (g)in respect to salvation,

2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

2 Like newborn infants, desire the pure spiritual milk,(C) so that you may grow by it for your salvation,(a)

2 Like newborn babies, thirst for the pure milk of the word so that by it you may grow in your salvation.

3 if you have experienced the Lord's kindness.

3 if you have (F)tasted (h)(G)the kindness of the Lord.

3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

3 since you have tasted(D) that the Lord is good.(E)(b)

3 Surely you have tasted that the Lord is good!

A Living Stone, A Chosen People

4 So as you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but chosen and priceless in God's sight,

4 And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been (H)rejected by men, but is (i)choice and precious in the sight of God,

4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

4 Coming to Him, a living stone—rejected by men but chosen and valuable to God—

4 As you come to him, the living stone who was rejected by people but was chosen and precious in God's sight,

5 you yourselves, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood and to offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

5 (I)you also, as living stones, (j)are being built up as a (J)spiritual house for a holy (K)priesthood, to (L)offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

5 you yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God(F) through Jesus Christ.

5 you, too, as living stones, are building yourselves up into a spiritual house and a holy priesthood, so that you may offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus, the Messiah.

6 For it says in scripture, "Look, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen and priceless cornerstone, and whoever believes in him will never be put to shame."

6 For this is contained in (k)Scripture:(M)Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a (N)precious corner stone,And he who believes in (l)Him will not be (m)disappointed.”

6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

6 For it is contained in Scripture:Look! I lay a stone in Zion,(G)a chosen and honored(c) cornerstone,(d)(H)and the one who believes in Himwill never be put to shame!(e)(I)(f)

6 This is why it says in Scripture: "Look! I am laying a chosen, precious cornerstone in Zion. The one who believes in him will never be ashamed."

7 So you who believe see his value, but for those who do not believe, the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,

7 (O)This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve,(P)The stone which the builders (Q)rejected,This became the very corner stone,”

7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

7 So honor will come to you who believe, but for the unbelieving,The stone that the builders rejected—this One has become the cornerstone,(J)(g)

7 Therefore he is precious to you who believe, but to those who do not believe, "The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,

8 and a stumbling-stone and a rock to trip over. They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

8 and,(R)A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”;(S)for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, (T)and to this doom they were also appointed.

8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

8 andA stone to stumble over,(h)and a rock to trip over.(i)(K)(j)They stumble because they disobey the message; they were destined(L) for this.

8 a stone they stumble over and a rock they trip on." They keep on stumbling because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may proclaim the virtues of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

9 But you are (U)a chosen race, a royal (V)priesthood, a (W)holy nation, (X)a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you (Y)out of darkness into His marvelous light;

9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

9 But you are a chosen race,(k)(M)(l) a royal priesthood,(N)(m)a holy nation,(O)(n) a people for His possession,(P)(o)so that you may proclaim the praises(p)(Q)(q)of the One who called you out of darknessinto His marvelous light.(R)

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people to be his very own and to proclaim the wonderful deeds of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

10 You once were not a people, but now you are God's people. You were shown no mercy, but now you have received mercy.

10 (Z)for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people;you had not received mercy,(S)but now you have received mercy.

10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

A Call To Good Works

11 Dear friends, I urge you as foreigners and exiles to keep away from fleshly desires that do battle against the soul,

11 (AA)Beloved, (AB)I urge you as (AC)aliens and strangers to abstain from (AD)fleshly lusts which wage (AE)war against the soul.

11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

11 Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and temporary residents(T) to abstain(U) from fleshly(V) desires that war against you.(r)(W)

11 Dear friends, I urge you as aliens and exiles to keep on abstaining from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul.

12 and maintain good conduct among the non-Christians, so that though they now malign you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God when he appears.

12 (AF)Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they (AG)slander you as evildoers, they may (n)because of your good deeds, as they observe them, (AH)glorify God (AI)in the day of (o)visitation.

12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

12 Conduct(X) yourselves honorably among the Gentiles,(s) so that in a case where they speak against you as those who do what is evil, they will, by observing your good works, glorify God on the day of visitation.(t)(Y)

12 Continue to live such upright lives among the gentiles that, when they slander you as practicers of evil, they may see your good actions and glorify God when he visits them.

Submission To Established Authority

13 Be subject to every human institution for the Lord's sake, whether to a king as supreme

13 (AJ)Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority,

13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

13 Submit(Z) to every human authority(u) because of the Lord, whether to the Emperor(v) as the supreme authority(AA)

13 For the Lord's sake submit yourselves to every human authority: whether to the king as supreme,

14 or to governors as those he commissions to punish wrongdoers and praise those who do good.

14 or to governors as sent (p)by him (AK)for the punishment of evildoers and the (AL)praise of those who do right.

14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.

14 or to governors as those sent out by him to punish those who do what is evil and to praise those who do what is good.

14 or to governors who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right.

15 For God wants you to silence the ignorance of foolish people by doing good.

15 For (q)(AM)such is the will of God that by doing right you may (AN)silence the ignorance of foolish men.

15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

15 For it is God’s will(AB) that you silence the ignorance(AC) of foolish people by doing good.

15 For it is God's will that by doing right you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.

16 Live as free people, not using your freedom as a pretext for evil, but as God's slaves.

16 Act as (AO)free men, and (r)do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as (AP)bondslaves of God.

16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

16 As God’s slaves,(AD) live as free people, but don’t use your freedom as a way to conceal evil.(AE)

16 Live like free people, and do not use your freedom as an excuse for doing evil. Instead, be God's servants.

17 Honor all people, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the king.

17 (AQ)Honor all people, (AR)love the brotherhood, (AS)fear God, (AT)honor the (s)king.

17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

17 Honor everyone. Love(AF) the brotherhood.(AG) Fear God.(AH) Honor the Emperor.(w)

17 Honor everyone. Keep on loving the community of believers, fearing God, and honoring the king.

Submission Of Slaves To Masters

18 Slaves, be subject to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are perverse.

18 (AU)Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and (AV)gentle, but also to those who are (t)unreasonable.

18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.

18 Household slaves, submit with all fear(AI) to your masters,(AJ) not only to the good and gentle but also to the cruel.(x)(AK)

18 You household servants must submit yourselves to your masters out of respect, not only to those who are kind and fair, but also to those who are unjust.

19 For this finds God's favor, if because of conscience toward God someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly.

19 For this finds (u)favor, if for the sake of (AW)conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly.

19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

19 For it brings favor(y) if, mindful of God’s will,(z)(aa) someone endures grief from suffering unjustly.

19 For it is a fine thing if, when moved by your conscience to please God, you suffer patiently when wronged.

20 For what credit is it if you sin and are mistreated and endure it? But if you do good and suffer and so endure, this finds favor with God.

20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if (AX)when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds (v)favor with God.

20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

20 For what credit is there if you sin and are punished, and you endure it? But when you do what is good and suffer,(AL) if you endure it, this brings favor with God.

20 What good does it do if, when you sin, you patiently receive punishment for it? But if you suffer for doing good and receive it patiently, you have God's approval.

21 For to this you were called, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example for you to follow in his steps.

21 For (AY)you have been called for this purpose, (AZ)since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you (BA)an example for you to follow in His steps,

21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

21 For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered(AM) for you, leaving you an example,(AN)so that you should follow(AO) in His steps.

21 This is, in fact, what you were called to do, because: The Messiah also suffered for you and left an example for you to follow in his steps.

22 He committed no sin nor was deceit found in his mouth.

22 who (BB)committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth;

22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

22 He did not commit sin,(AP)and no deceit(AQ) was found in His mouth;(AR)(ab)

22 "He never sinned, and he never told a lie."

23 When he was maligned, he did not answer back; when he suffered, he threatened no retaliation, but committed himself to God who judges justly.

23 (w)and while being (BC)reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;

23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

23 when He was reviled,He did not revile in return;when He was suffering,He did not threatenbut entrusted Himself to the One who judges(AS) justly.

23 When he was insulted, he did not retaliate. When he suffered, he did not threaten. It was his habit to commit the matter to the one who judges fairly.

24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we may cease from sinning and live for righteousness. By his wounds you were healed.

24 and He Himself (x)(BD)bore our sins in His body on the (y)(BE)cross, so that we (BF)might die to (z)sin and live to righteousness; for (BG)by His (aa)wounds you were (BH)healed.

24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

24 He Himself bore our sins(AT)in His body(AU) on the tree,(AV)so that, having died to sins,(AW)we might live for righteousness;(AX)you have been healed by His wounds.(AY)(ac)

24 "He himself bore our sins" in his body on the tree, so that we might die to those sins and live righteously. "By his wounds you have been healed."

25 For you were going astray like sheep but now you have turned back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

25 For you were (BI)continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the (BJ)Shepherd and (ab)Guardian of your souls.

25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

25 For you were like sheep going astray,(AZ)(ad)but you have now returnedto the Shepherd(BA) and Guardian(ae) of your souls.

25 You were "like sheep that kept going astray," but now you have returned to the shepherd and overseer of your souls.
