1 Now Nahash the Ammonite went up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "{Make a treaty with us} and we will serve you."
1 Now (A)Nahash the Ammonite came up and (a)besieged (B)Jabesh-gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make (C)a covenant with us and we will serve you.”
1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.
1 Nahash(a)(A) the Ammonite came up and laid siege to Jabesh-gilead.(B) All the men of Jabesh said to him, “Make a treaty(C) with us, and we will serve you.”
1 Meanwhile, Nahash, king of the Ammonites, had been severely oppressing the descendants of Gad and descendants of Reuben, gouging out their right eyes and not allowing Israel to have a deliverer. No one was left among the Israelis across the Jordan whose right eye Nahash, king of the Ammonites, had not gouged out. However, 7,000 men had escaped from the Ammonites and entered Jabesh-gilead.
2 But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "On this [condition] {I will make a treaty} with you, by gouging out the right eye of each of you, so that I can make it a disgrace for all Israel."
2 But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “I will make it with you on this condition, (D)that I will gouge out the right eye of every one of you, thus I will make it (E)a reproach on all Israel.”
2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
2 Nahash the Ammonite replied, “I’ll make one with you on this condition: that I gouge out everyone’s right eye(D) and humiliate all Israel.”(E)
2 So after a month, Nahash the Ammonite came up and laid siege to Jabesh-gilead. All the men of Jabesh told Nahash, "Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you."
3 So the elders of Jabesh said to him, "Leave us alone for seven days so that we may send messengers in all the territory of Israel, and if there [is] no deliverer for us, then we will come out to you."
3 (F)The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Let us alone for seven days, that we may send messengers throughout the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to deliver us, we will come out to you.”
3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
3 “Don’t do anything to us for seven days,” the elders of Jabesh said to him, “and let us send messengers throughout the territory of Israel. If no one saves us, we will surrender to you.”
3 Nahash the Ammonite told them, "I'll make a covenant with you on the condition that I gouge out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace on all Israel."
4 When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, {they reported these things to} the people. Then all the people lifted up their voices and wept.
4 Then the messengers came (G)to Gibeah of Saul and spoke these words in the hearing of the people, and all the people (H)lifted up their voices and wept.
4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.
4 When the messengers came to Gibeah,(F) Saul’s hometown, and told the terms to(b) the people, all wept aloud.(G)
4 The elders of Jabesh told him, "Leave us alone for seven days so that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then if no one delivers us, we will come out to you and surrender."
5 {Just then}, Saul was coming from the field behind the cattle. Saul said, "What [is the matter] with the people, that they [are] weeping?" So they recounted to him the words of the men of Jabesh.
5 Now behold, Saul was coming from the field (I)behind the oxen, and (b)he said, “What is the matter with the people that they weep?” So they related to him the words of the men of Jabesh.
5 And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.
5 Just then Saul was coming in from the field behind his oxen. “What’s the matter with the people? Why are they weeping?” Saul inquired, and they repeated to him the words of the men from Jabesh.
5 When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported the terms to the people, all the people cried loudly.
6 Then the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and {he became very angry}.
6 Then (J)the Spirit of God came upon Saul mightily when he heard these words, and (c)he became very angry.
6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.
6 When Saul heard these words, the Spirit of God suddenly took control of him,(H) and his anger burned furiously.
6 Just then Saul was coming in from the field behind the oxen and he said, "What's with the people? Why are they crying?" They reported to him what the men of Jabesh had said.
7 So he took a yoke of oxen and cut them into pieces and sent [them] throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, "Whoever [is] not going out after Saul and after Samuel, so will it be done to his oxen." Then the fear of Yahweh fell on the people and they went out as one man.
7 He took a yoke of oxen and (K)cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “(L)Whoever does not come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” Then the dread of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out (M)as one man.
7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
7 He took a team of oxen, cut them in pieces,(I) and sent them throughout the land of Israel by messengers who said, “This is what will be done to the ox of anyone who doesn’t march behind Saul and Samuel.”(J) As a result, the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they went out united.(K)
7 When Saul heard these words, the Spirit of God came on him, and he was very angry.
8 He mustered them at Bezek; the {Israelites} [were] three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah [were] thirty thousand.
8 He (d)numbered them in (N)Bezek; and the (O)sons of Israel were 300,000, and the men of Judah 30,000.
8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
8 He took a yoke of oxen, cut them in pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers through all the territory of Israel: "This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not come out and join Saul and Samuel!" The fear of the LORD fell on the people and they came out as one man.
9 They said to the messengers who had come, "Thus you will say to the men of Jabesh Gilead: 'Tomorrow deliverance for you will come {when the sun is hot}.'" When the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh, they rejoiced.
9 They said to the messengers who had come, “Thus you shall say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will have deliverance.’” So the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
9 He told the messengers who had come, “Tell this to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Deliverance will be yours tomorrow by the time the sun is hot.’” So the messengers told the men of Jabesh, and they rejoiced.
9 Saul mustered them at Bezek, and there were 300,000 Israelis and 30,000 men of Judah.
10 The men of Jabesh said, "Tomorrow we will come out to you and you may do to us {whatever seems good to you}."
10 Then the men of Jabesh said, “(P)Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good (e)to you.”
10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.
10 Then the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Tomorrow we will come out, and you can do whatever you want(e) to us.”
10 They told the messengers who had come, "You are to say this to the men of Jabesh-gilead, "Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will be delivered.'" The messengers went and reported to the men of Jabesh, and they rejoiced.
11 {And the} next day Saul placed the people [in] three divisions. Then they came into the middle of the camp {at the early morning watch} and struck down {the Ammonites} until the heat of the day. It happened that the remainder were scattered {so that no two among them remained together}.
11 The next morning Saul put the people (Q)in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp at the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
11 The next day Saul organized the troops into three divisions.(N) During the morning watch, they invaded the Ammonite camp and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. There were survivors, but they were so scattered that no two of them were left together.
11 The men of Jabesh said, "Tomorrow we will come out to you and surrender. Then you can do whatever you want to us."
12 Then the people said to Samuel, "Who [is] the one who asked, 'Will Saul reign over us?' Give the men to us that we may kill them."
12 Then the people said to Samuel, “(R)Who is he that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ (f)(S)Bring the men, that we may put them to death.”
12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.
12 Afterward, the people said to Samuel, “Who said that Saul should not(f) reign over us?(O) Give us those men so we can kill them!”(P)
12 The next day Saul separated the people into three companies. They came into the camp during the morning watch, and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered so that no two of them remained together.
13 But Saul said, "No one will be put to death on this day, because {today} Yahweh has provided deliverance in Israel."
13 But Saul said, “(T)Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today (U)the Lord has accomplished deliverance in Israel.”
13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.
13 But Saul ordered, “No one will be executed this day, for today the Lord has provided deliverance in Israel.”(Q)
13 The people told Samuel, "Who said, "Will Saul reign over us?' Bring them to us and we will put them to death!"
14 Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal, and let us renew the kingship there."
14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come and let us go to (V)Gilgal and (W)renew the kingdom there.”
14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.
14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let’s go to Gilgal, so we can renew the kingship there.”
14 But Saul said, "Let no one be put to death this day, because today the LORD has delivered Israel."
15 So all the people went to Gilgal and they made Saul king there before Yahweh in Gilgal. They sacrificed fellowship offerings there before Yahweh. Then Saul rejoiced there greatly [along with] all the men of Israel.
15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king (X)before the Lord in Gilgal. There they also (Y)offered sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there in the Lord’s presence(R) they made Saul king. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings(S) in the Lord’s presence, and Saul and all the men of Israel greatly rejoiced.
15 Then Samuel told the people, "Come, let's go to Gilgal and reaffirm the kingship there."
