David Is Anointed

1 The LORD told Samuel, "How long will you grieve over Saul, since I've rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I'm sending you to Jesse from Bethlehem because I've chosen for myself one of his sons as king."

1 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “(A)How long will you grieve over Saul, since (B)I have rejected him from being king over Israel? (C)Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to (D)Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have (E)selected a king for Myself among his sons.”

1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul,(A) since I have rejected him as king over Israel?(B) Fill your horn with oil(C) and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem(D) because I have selected a king from his sons.”

1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve for Saul, when I have rejected him as king over Israel? (a)Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have chosen a king for Myself among his sons.”

2 Samuel said, "How can I go? Saul will hear about this and kill me!"

2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? When Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “(F)Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’

2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.

2 Samuel asked, “How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me!”The Lord answered, “Take a young cow with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’(E)

2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? When Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer from the herd with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’

3 The LORD said, "Take a heifer with you and say, "I've come to offer a sacrifice to the LORD.' You are to invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I'll show you what you are to do. You are to anoint for me the one I tell you."

3 You shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and (G)I will show you what you shall do; and (H)you shall anoint for Me the one whom I (a)designate to you.”

3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

3 Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will let you know what you are to do.(F) You are to anoint for Me the one I indicate to you.”(G)

3 You shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do [after that]; and you shall anoint for Me the one whom I designate.”

4 Samuel did what the LORD said and went to Bethlehem. The elders of the town came out to meet him trembling, and said, "May your coming be in peace."

4 So Samuel did what the Lord said, and came to (I)Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, “(J)Do you come in peace?”

4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

4 Samuel did what the Lord directed and went to Bethlehem.(H) When the elders of the town met him, they trembled(a) and asked, “Do(b) you come in peace?”(I)

4 So Samuel did what the Lord said, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, “Do you come in peace?”

5 He said, "Peace, I've come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice." Samuel consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

5 He said, “In peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. (K)Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” He also consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

5 “In peace,” he replied. “I’ve come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves(J) and come with me to the sacrifice.”(c) Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

5 And he said, “In peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” He also consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab, and said, "Surely he's the LORD's anointed."

6 When they entered, he looked at (L)Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him.”

6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him.

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab(K) and said, “Certainly the Lord’s anointed one is here before Him.”

6 So it happened, when they had come, he looked at Eliab [the eldest son] and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him.”

7 The LORD told Samuel, "Don't look at his appearance or his height, for I've rejected him. Truly, God does not see what man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart."

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for (b)God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, (M)but the Lord looks at the heart.”

7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature, because I have rejected him. Man does not see what the Lord sees,(d) for man sees what is visible,(e) but the Lord sees the heart.”(L)

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks (b)at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

8 Then Jesse summoned Abinadab and brought him before Samuel, and he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one."

8 Then Jesse called (N)Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.

8 Jesse called Abinadab(M) and presented him to Samuel. “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either,” Samuel said.

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass before Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”

9 Then Jesse brought Shammah, and he said, "Neither has the LORD chosen this one."

9 Next Jesse made (c)(O)Shammah pass by. And he said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”

9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.

9 Then Jesse presented Shammah,(N) but Samuel said, “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either.”

9 Next Jesse had Shammah pass by. And Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen him either.”

10 Jesse brought seven of his sons before Samuel, and Samuel told Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen these."

10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”

10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.

10 After Jesse presented seven of his sons to him, Samuel told Jesse, “The Lord hasn’t chosen any of these.”

10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen [any of] these.”

11 Then Samuel told Jesse, "Are these all the young men?" He said, "There yet remains the youngest one, and right now he's tending the sheep." Samuel told Jesse, "Send someone to get him, for we won't do anything else until he arrives here."

11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are these all the children?” And he said, “(P)There remains yet the youngest, and behold, he is tending the sheep.” Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and (d)bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.”

11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.

11 Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?”“There is still the youngest,”(O) he answered, “but right now he’s tending the sheep.” Samuel told Jesse, “Send for him. We won’t sit down to eat until he gets here.”

11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” Jesse replied, “There is still one left, the youngest; he is tending the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send word and bring him; because we will not sit down [to eat the sacrificial meal] until he comes here.”

12 So he sent and brought him. He had a dark, healthy complexion, with beautiful eyes, and he was handsome. The LORD said, "Get up and anoint him, for this is the one."

12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with (Q)beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the Lord said, “(R)Arise, anoint him; for this is he.”

12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

12 So Jesse sent for him. He had beautiful eyes and a healthy,(f) handsome appearance.(P)Then the Lord said, “Anoint him, for he is the one.”(Q)

12 So Jesse sent word and brought him in. Now he had a ruddy complexion, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. The Lord said [to Samuel], “Arise, anoint him; for this is he.”

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD came on David from that day forward. Then Samuel got up and went to Ramah.

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and (S)anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and (T)the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

13 So Samuel took the horn of oil, anointed him(R) in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord took control of David from that day forward.(S) Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in the presence of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

Saul In Torment

14 The Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

14 (U)Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and (V)an evil spirit from the Lord terrorized him.

14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul,(T) and an evil spirit sent from the Lord began to torment him,

14 Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented and terrified him.

15 Saul's servants told him, "Look, an evil spirit from God is troubling you.

15 Saul’s servants then said to him, “Behold now, an evil spirit from God is terrorizing you.

15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

15 so Saul’s servants said to him, “You see that an evil spirit from God is tormenting you.

15 Saul’s servants said to him, “Behold, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you.

16 Let our lord order his servants who attend you to look for a man who is skilled in playing the lyre. And then when an evil spirit from God comes on you, he will play and you will be better."

16 Let our lord now command your servants who are before you. Let them seek a man who is a skillful player on the harp; and it shall come about when the evil spirit from God is on you, that (W)he shall play the harp with his hand, and you will be well.”

16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

16 Let our lord command your servants here in your presence to look for someone who knows how to play the lyre. Whenever the evil spirit from God troubles you, that person can play the lyre, and you will feel better.”(U)

16 Let our lord now command your servants who are here before you to find a man who plays skillfully on the harp; and when the evil spirit from God is on you, he shall play the harp with his hand, and you will be well.”

17 Saul told his servants, "Find a man for me who can play well and bring him to me."

17 So Saul said to his servants, “Provide for me now a man who can play well and bring him to me.”

17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

17 Then Saul commanded his servants, “Find me someone who plays well and bring him to me.”

17 So Saul told his servants, “Find me a man who plays well and bring him to me.”

18 One of the young men answered: "Look, I've seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skilled in playing. The man is a valiant soldier, gifted in speech, and handsome. And the LORD is with him."

18 Then one of the young men said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is a skillful musician, (X)a mighty man of valor, a warrior, one prudent in speech, and a handsome man; and (Y)the Lord is with him.”

18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.

18 One of the young men answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is also a valiant man,(V) a warrior, eloquent, handsome, and the Lord is with him.”(W)

18 One of the young men said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is a skillful musician, a brave and competent man, a warrior, discerning (prudent, eloquent) in speech, and a handsome man; and the Lord is with him.”

19 So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, "Send me your son David, who is with the sheep."

19 So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David who is with the flock.”

19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.

19 Then Saul dispatched messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”

19 So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the flock.”

20 Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a container of wine, and one kid, and sent them to Saul along with his son David.

20 Jesse (Z)took a donkey loaded with bread and a jug of wine and a young goat, and sent them to Saul by David his son.

20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

20 So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and one young goat and sent them by his son David to Saul.(X)

20 Jesse took a donkey [loaded with] bread and a jug of wine and a young goat, and sent them to Saul with David his son.

21 David went to Saul and began to serve him. Saul loved him very much, and he became his armor bearer.

21 Then David came to Saul and (e)(AA)attended him; and (f)Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor bearer.

21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.

21 When David came to Saul(Y) and entered his service, Saul admired him greatly, and David became his armor-bearer.

21 Then David came to Saul and attended him. Saul loved him greatly and [later] David became his armor bearer.

22 Saul sent a messenger to Jesse to tell him, "Allow David to serve me, because I'm pleased with him."

22 Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David now stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”

22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.

22 Then Saul sent word to Jesse: “Let David remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”

22 Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Please let David (c)be my attendant, for he has found favor in my sight.”

23 Whenever an evil spirit from God came to Saul, David would take the lyre and play it. Relief would come to Saul and he would be better, because the evil spirit would leave him.

23 So it came about whenever (AB)the evil spirit from God came to Saul, David would take the harp and play it with his hand; and Saul would be refreshed and be well, and the evil spirit would depart from him.

23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

23 Whenever the spirit from God troubled Saul,(Z) David would pick up his lyre and play, and Saul would then be relieved, feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.

23 So it came about that whenever the [evil] spirit from God was on Saul, David took a harp and played it with his hand; so Saul would be refreshed and be well, and the evil spirit would leave him.
