1 When David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan and David became bound together in close friendship. Jonathan loved David as much as he did his own life.
1 Now it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul, that (A)the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and (B)Jonathan loved him as himself.
1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
1 When David had finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan committed himself to David, and loved him as much as he loved himself.(A)

2 Saul retained David on that day and did not allow him to return to his father's house.
2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

4 Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with the rest of his gear, including his sword, his bow, and even his belt.

4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

5 On every mission on which Saul sent him, David achieved success. So Saul appointed him over the men of war. This pleased not only all the army, but also Saul's servants.
5 So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and (a)prospered; and Saul set him over the men of war. And it was pleasing in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.
5 David marched out with the army and was successful in everything Saul sent him to do. Saul put him in command of the soldiers, which pleased all the people and Saul’s servants as well.
5 David went out and was successful everywhere Saul sent him, and Saul put him in charge of the troops. This pleased the entire army, as well as Saul's officials.
6 When the men arrived after David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women from all the cities of Israel came out singing and dancing to meet King Saul. They were happy as they played their tambourines and three-stringed instruments.
6 It happened as they were coming, when David returned from killing the Philistine, that (F)the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy and with (b)musical instruments.
6 And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.
6 As the troops were coming back, when David was returning from killing the Philistine, the women came out from all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul,(D) singing and dancing with tambourines, with shouts of joy, and with three-stringed instruments.
6 When David returned from defeating the Philistine, as they were entering the city, women from all the towns of Israel came out to meet King Saul, singing and dancing as they joyously played tambourines and lyres.
7 The women who were playing the music sang, "Saul has struck down his thousands, but David his tens of thousands!"
7 The women (G)sang as they (c)played, and said,“(H)Saul has slain his thousands,(I)And David his ten thousands.”
7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
7 As they celebrated, the women sang:Saul has killed his thousands,but David his tens of thousands.(E)
7 As the women sang and played, they said, "Saul has struck down his thousands but David his ten thousands."
8 This made Saul very angry. The statement displeased him and he thought, "They have attributed to David tens of thousands, but to me they have attributed only thousands. What does he lack, except the kingdom?"
8 Then Saul became very angry, for this saying (d)displeased him; and he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed thousands. Now (J)what more can he have but the kingdom?”
8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
8 Saul was furious and resented this song.(a) “They credited tens of thousands to David,” he complained, “but they only credited me with thousands. What more can he have but the kingdom?”(F)
8 Saul was very angry and he did not like what the women sang. He told himself, "They have attributed tens of thousands to David, but to me they have attributed thousands. What else can he have but the kingdom?"
10 The next day an evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul and he prophesied within his house. Now David was playing the lyre that day. There was a spear in Saul's hand,
10 Now it came about on the next day that (K)an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul, and (L)he raved in the midst of the house, while David was playing the harp with his hand, (e)(M)as usual; and (f)(N)a spear was in Saul’s hand.
10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.
10 The next day an evil spirit sent from God took control of Saul,(G) and he began to rave(b) inside the palace. David was playing the lyre as usual,(H) but Saul was holding a spear,(I)
10 The next day, while David was playing the lyre as he had before, the evil spirit from the LORD attacked Saul, and he began to rave inside the house with a spear in his hand.
11 and Saul threw the spear, thinking, "I'll nail David to the wall!" But David escaped from him on two different occasions.
11 (O)Saul hurled the spear for he thought, “I will (g)pin David to the wall.” But David (h)escaped from his presence twice.
11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.
11 Saul hurled it, thinking, "I'll pin David to the wall." But David escaped from him twice.
13 Saul removed David from his presence and made him a commanding officer. David led the army out to battle and back.
13 Therefore Saul removed him from (i)his presence and appointed him as his commander of a thousand; and (S)he went out and came in before the people.
13 Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
13 Saul removed David from his presence and made him an officer over a division of soldiers. So David led the troops in battle.
17 Then Saul said to David, "Here's my oldest daughter, Merab. I want to give her to you in marriage. Only be a brave warrior for me and fight the battles of the Lord." For Saul thought, "There's no need for me to raise my hand against him. Let it be the hand of the Philistines!"
17 Then Saul said to David, “(V)Here is my older daughter Merab; I will give her to you as a wife, only be a valiant man for me and fight (W)the Lord’s battles.” For Saul thought, “My hand shall not be against him, but (X)let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”
17 And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD'S battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.
17 Saul told David, “Here is my oldest daughter Merab. I’ll give her to you as a wife,(Q) if you will be a warrior for me and fight the Lord’s battles.”(R) But Saul was thinking, “My hand doesn’t need to be against him; let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”(S)
17 Saul told David, "Here is my older daughter Merab. I'll give her to you as a wife. Just be an excellent soldier for me and fight the LORD's battles." Now Saul told himself, "I won't harm him myself. Instead, I'll let the Philistines harm him."
18 David said to Saul, "Who am I? Who are my relatives or the clan of my father in Israel that I should become the king's son-in-law?"
18 But David said to Saul, “(Y)Who am I, and what is my life or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be the king’s son-in-law?”
18 And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?
18 Then David responded, “Who am I,(T) and what is my family or my father’s clan in Israel that I should become the king’s son-in-law?”
18 David told Saul, "Who am I and what is my life or my father's family in Israel that I should be the king's son-in-law?"
19 When the time came for Merab, Saul's daughter, to be given to David, she instead was given in marriage to Adriel, who was from Meholah.
19 So it came about at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given to (Z)Adriel (AA)the Meholathite for a wife.
19 But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.
19 When it was time to give Saul’s daughter Merab to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite as a wife.(U)
19 And when the time came to give Saul's daughter Merab to David, she was given as a wife to Adriel of Meholah.
20 Now Michal, Saul's daughter, loved David. When they told Saul about this, it pleased him.
20 Now (AB)Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved David. When they told Saul, the thing was agreeable (l)to him.
20 And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
20 Saul's daughter Michal loved David. Saul was informed of this and he liked the idea.
21 Saul said, "I will give her to him so that she may become a snare to him and the hand of the Philistines may be against him." So Saul said to David, "Today is the second time for you to become my son-in-law."
21 Saul thought, “I will give her to him that she may become a snare to him, and (AC)that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David, “(AD)For a second time you may be my son-in-law today.”
21 And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain.
21 “I’ll give her to him,” Saul thought. “She’ll be a trap for him, and the hand of the Philistines will be against him.”(W) So Saul said to David a second time, “You can now be my son-in-law.”(X)
21 Saul told himself, "I'll give her to him and she can be a snare to him and the Philistines will harm him." So Saul told David, "For a second time you can be my son-in-law today."
22 Then Saul instructed his servants, "Tell David secretly, 'The king is pleased with you, and all his servants like you. So now become the king's son-in-law."
22 Then Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David secretly, saying, ‘Behold, the king delights in you, and all his servants love you; now therefore, become the king’s son-in-law.’”
22 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's son in law.
22 Saul then ordered his servants, “Speak to David in private and tell him, ‘Look, the king is pleased with you, and all his servants love you. Therefore, you should become the king’s son-in-law.’”
22 Saul commanded his officials, "Speak with David privately and say, "Look, the king delights in you, and all his officials love you. Now become the king's son-in-law.'"
23 So Saul's servants spoke these words privately to David. David replied, "Is becoming the king's son-in-law something insignificant to you? I'm just a poor and lightly-esteemed man!"
23 So Saul’s servants spoke these words (m)to David. But David said, “Is it trivial in your sight to become the king’s son-in-law, (AE)since I am a poor man and lightly esteemed?”
23 And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?
23 Saul’s servants reported these words directly to David,(d) but he replied, “Is it trivial in your sight to become the king’s son-in-law? I am a poor man who is common.”(Y)
23 Saul's officials delivered this message to David, and he asked, "Is becoming the king's son-in-law an unimportant thing to you? I'm a poor and unimportant man."
25 Saul replied, "Here is what you should say to David: 'There is nothing that the king wants as a price for the bride except a hundred Philistine foreskins, so that he can be avenged of his enemies.'" (Now Saul was thinking that he could kill David by the hand of the Philistines.)
25 Saul then said, “Thus you shall say to David, ‘The king does not desire any (AF)dowry except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, (AG)to take vengeance on the king’s enemies.’” Now (AH)Saul planned to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
25 And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
25 Then Saul replied, “Say this to David: ‘The king desires no other bride-price(Z) except 100 Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.’”(AA) Actually, Saul intended to cause David’s death at the hands of the Philistines.(AB)
25 Saul said, "This is what you are to tell David, "The king desires no bride price except 100 Philistine foreskins to take vengeance on the king's enemies.'" Now Saul thought he would cause David to die at the hand of the Philistines.
26 So his servants told David these things and David agreed to become the king's son-in-law. Now the specified time had not yet expired
26 When his servants told David these words, (o)it pleased David to become the king’s son-in-law. (p)(AI)Before the days had expired
26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired.
26 When the servants reported these terms to David, he was pleased(e) to become the king’s son-in-law. Before the wedding day arrived,(f)
26 When his officials delivered this message to David, David decided it would be a good thing to become the king's son-in-law. Before the time was up,
27 when David, along with his men, went out and struck down two hundred Philistine men. David brought their foreskins and presented all of them to the king so he could become the king's son-in-law. Saul then gave him his daughter Michal in marriage.
27 David rose up and went, (AJ)he and his men, and struck down two hundred men among the Philistines. Then (AK)David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. So Saul gave him Michal his daughter for a wife.
27 Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.
27 David and his men went out and killed 200(g) Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented them as full payment to the king to become his son-in-law. Then Saul gave his daughter Michal to David as his wife.(AC)
27 David got up, went out with his men, and struck down 200 Philistine men. David brought their foreskins and gave them all to the king so he could become the king's son-in-law. So Saul gave him his daughter Michal as a wife.
28 When Saul realized that the Lord was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David,
28 When Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him,
28 And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal Saul's daughter loved him.
28 Saul realized that the Lord was with David and that his daughter Michal loved him,
28 As Saul continued to observe, he realized that the LORD was with David and that Saul's daughter Michal loved him.
29 Saul became even more afraid of him. Saul continued to be at odds with David from then on.
29 then Saul was even more afraid of David. Thus Saul was David’s enemy continually.
29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually.
29 and he became even more afraid of David. As a result, Saul was David’s enemy from then on.
29 Then Saul was even more afraid of David, and Saul was David's enemy from that time on.
30 Then the leaders of the Philistines would march out, and as often as they did so, David achieved more success than all of Saul's servants. His name was held in high esteem.
30 Then the commanders of the Philistines (AL)went out to battle, and it happened as often as they went out, that David (AM)behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul. So his name was highly esteemed.
30 Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
30 Every time the Philistine commanders came out to fight,(AD) David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers.(AE) So his name became well known.
30 The Philistine commanders would go out to fight and whenever they did, David was more successful than any of Saul's other leaders. His name was held in high esteem.
