Jonathan Supports David Over Saul

1 And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is my iniquity? and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?

1 Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and (A)said (a)to Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? And what is my sin before your father, that he is seeking my life?”

1 And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?

1 David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came to Jonathan and asked, “What have I done?(A) What did I do wrong? How have I sinned against your father so that he wants to take my life?”

1 David fled from Naioth in Ramah. He came to Jonathan and said, "What have I done? What is my crime, and how have I wronged your father so that he's determined to kill me?

2 And he said unto him, God forbid; you shall not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will show it to me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

2 He said to him, “Far from it, you shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small (b)without disclosing it to me. So why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so!”

2 And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

2 Jonathan said to him, “No, you won’t die. Listen, my father doesn’t do anything, great or small, without telling me.(a) So why would he hide this matter from me? This can’t be true.”

2 Jonathan told him, "Far from it! You won't die. Look, my father never does anything, great or small, without telling me; so why should my father hide this thing from me? It's not like that!"

3 And David swore again, and said, Your father certainly knows that I have found grace in your eyes; and he says, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.

3 Yet David (B)vowed again, (c)saying, “Your father knows well that I have found favor in your sight, and he has said, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, or he will be grieved.’ But truly (C)as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is (d)hardly a step between me and death.”

3 And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.

3 But David said, “Your father certainly knows that you have come to look favorably on me. He has said, ‘Jonathan must not know of this, or else he will be grieved.’” David also swore, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”(B)

3 David again took an oath: "Your father certainly knows that I've found favor with you, and so he told himself, "Jonathan must not know this so he won't be upset.' But as certainly as the LORD is alive and living, and as certainly as I'm alive and living, too, there is only a step between me and death."

4 Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever your soul desires, I will even do it for you.

4 Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever (e)you say, I will do for you.”

4 Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.

4 Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.”

4 Jonathan told David, "Whatever you say, I'll do."

5 And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king to eat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at evening.

5 So David said to Jonathan, “Behold, tomorrow is (D)the new moon, and I ought (E)to sit down to eat with the king. But let me go, (F)that I may hide myself in the field until the third evening.

5 And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.

5 So David told him, “Look, tomorrow is the New Moon,(C) and I’m supposed to sit down and eat with the king.(D) Instead, let me go, and I’ll hide in the field until the third night.(E)

5 David told Jonathan, "Look, the New Moon is tomorrow, and I'm expected to sit down with the king to eat. Let me go so I can hide in the field until the evening of the day after tomorrow.

6 If your father at all misses me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.

6 If your father misses me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked leave of me to run to (G)Bethlehem his city, because it is (H)the yearly sacrifice there for the whole family.’

6 If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.

6 If your father misses me at all, say, ‘David urgently requested my permission to quickly go to his town Bethlehem(F) for an annual sacrifice(G) there involving the whole clan.’

6 If your father actually notices that I'm not there, then you are to say, "David urgently requested that I allow him to run to his hometown of Bethlehem because the yearly sacrifice for the entire family was taking place there.'

7 If he say thus, It is well; your servant shall have peace: but if he is very angry, then be sure that evil is determined by him.

7 If he (f)says, ‘It is good,’ your servant will be safe; but if he is very angry, (I)know that he has decided on evil.

7 If he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.

7 If he says, ‘Good,’ then your servant is safe, but if he becomes angry, you will know he has evil intentions.

7 If he says, "Good,' then your servant will be safe. But if he actually gets angry, you will know that his intentions are evil.

8 Therefore you shall deal kindly with your servant; for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the LORD with you: nevertheless, if there be in me iniquity, slay me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father?

8 Therefore deal kindly with your servant, for (J)you have brought your servant into a covenant of the Lord with you. But (K)if there is iniquity in me, put me to death yourself; for why then should you bring me to your father?”

8 Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?

8 Deal faithfully with your servant, for you have brought me into a covenant with you before the Lord.(H) If I have done anything wrong,(I) then kill me yourself; why take me to your father?”

8 Now, show gracious kindness to your servant because you have entered into a sacred covenant with your servant. If there is iniquity in me, then kill me yourself why should you bring me to your father?"

9 And Jonathan said, Far be it from you: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon you, then would not I tell it to you?

9 Jonathan said, “Far be it from you! For if I should indeed learn that evil has been decided by my father to come upon you, then would I not tell you about it?”

9 And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?

9 “No!” Jonathan responded. “If I ever find out my father has evil intentions against you, wouldn’t I tell you about it?”

9 "Nonsense!" Jonathan replied. "If I actually knew that my father intended evil against you, wouldn't I tell you about it?"

10 Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if your father answers you roughly?

10 Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me (g)if your father answers you harshly?”

10 Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee roughly?

10 So David asked Jonathan, “Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?”

10 Then David told Jonathan, "Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?"

11 And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.

11 Jonathan said to David, “Come, and let us go out into the field.” So both of them went out to the field.

11 And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.

11 He answered David, “Come on, let’s go out to the field.” So both of them went out to the field.

11 Then Jonathan told David, "Come, let's go into the field." So the two of them went into the field.

12 And Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel, when I have sounded out my father tomorrow about this time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto you, and show it to you;

12 Then Jonathan said to David, “The Lord, the God of Israel, be witness! When I have sounded out my father about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if there is good feeling toward David, shall I not then send to you and (h)make it known to you?

12 And Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and shew it thee;

12 “By the Lord, the God of Israel, I will sound out my father by this time tomorrow or the next day. If I find out that he is favorable toward you, will I not send for you and tell you?(b)

12 Jonathan told David, "The LORD God of Israel is my witness that I'll carefully question my father by tomorrow or the next day. And if the response is favorable for David, will I not then send word to you and let you know?

13 The LORD do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it pleases my father to do you evil, then I will show it to you, and send you away, that you may go in peace: and the LORD be with you, as he has been with my father.

13 If it please my father to do you harm, (L)may the Lord do so to Jonathan and more also, if I do not (i)make it known to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. And (M)may the Lord be with you as He has been with my father.

13 The LORD do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil, then I will shew it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my father.

13 If my father intends to bring evil on you, may God punish Jonathan and do so severely(J) if I do not tell you(c) and send you away so you may go in peace. May the Lord be with you,(K) just as He was with my father.

13 But if my father intends to harm you, may the LORD strike me dead if I don't let you know and send you away so you may go safely. May the LORD be with you as he has been with my father.

14 And you shall not only while yet I live show me the kindness of the LORD, that I die not:

14 If I am still alive, will you not show me the lovingkindness of the Lord, that I may not die?

14 And thou shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of the LORD, that I die not:

14 If I continue to live, treat me with the Lord’s faithful love, but if I die,

14 If I remain alive, don't fail to show me the LORD's gracious love so that I don't die.

15 But also you shall not cut off your kindness from my house forever: no, not when the LORD has cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.

15 (N)You shall not cut off your lovingkindness from my house forever, not even when the Lord cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.”

15 But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.

15 don’t ever withdraw your faithful love from my household—not even when the Lord cuts off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”(L)

15 And don't stop showing your gracious love to my family forever, not even when the LORD eliminates each of David's enemies from the surface of the earth."

16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the LORD even require it at the hand of David's enemies.

16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “(O)May the Lord require it at the hands of David’s enemies.”

16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the LORD even require it at the hand of David's enemies.

16 Then Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David,(M) saying, “May the Lord hold David’s enemies accountable.”(d)(N)

16 Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David: "May the LORD punish any violation of this covenant by the hand of David's enemies."

17 And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

17 Jonathan made David vow again because of his love for him, because (P)he loved him as he loved his own life.

17 And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

17 Jonathan once again swore to David(e) in his love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.(O)

17 Jonathan made David vow again out of his love for him, because he loved him as himself.

18 Then Jonathan said to David, Tomorrow is the new moon: and you shall be missed, because your seat will be empty.

18 Then Jonathan said to him, “(Q)Tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be missed because your seat will be empty.

18 Then Jonathan said to David, To morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.

18 Then Jonathan said to him, “Tomorrow is the New Moon;(P) you’ll be missed because your seat will be empty.

18 Jonathan told him, "Tomorrow is the New Moon, and you will be missed because your seat is empty.

19 And when you have stayed three days, then you shall go down quickly, and come to the place where you did hide yourself when the matter was in hand, and shall remain by the stone Ezel.

19 When you have stayed for three days, you shall go down quickly and come to the place where you hid yourself on that eventful day, and you shall remain by the stone Ezel.

19 And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.

19 The following day hurry down and go to the place where you hid on the day this incident began and stay beside the rock Ezel.

19 On the third day go down quickly and come to the place where you hid earlier. Remain beside the rock at Ezel.

20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side of it, as though I shot at a mark.

20 I will shoot three arrows to the side, as though I shot at a target.

20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.

20 I will shoot three arrows beside it as if I’m aiming at a target.

20 I'll shoot three arrows to the side of the rock as though I were shooting at a target.

21 And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of you, take them; then come you: for there is peace to you, and no hurt; as the LORD lives.

21 And behold, I will send the lad, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I specifically say to the lad, ‘Behold, the arrows are on this side of you, get them,’ then come; for there is safety for you and (j)no harm, as the Lord lives.

21 And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; as the LORD liveth.

21 Then I will send the young man and say, ‘Go and find the arrows!’ Now, if I expressly say to the young man, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you—get them,’ then come, because as the Lord lives, it is safe for you and there is no problem.

21 Then I'll send a servant, saying, "Go, find the arrows.' If I specifically say to the servant, "Look, the arrows are on this side of you, get them,' then come out because it's safe for you, and, as surely as the LORD lives, there is no danger.

22 But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond you; go your way: for the LORD has sent you away.

22 But if I (k)say to the youth, ‘(R)Behold, the arrows are beyond you,’ go, for the Lord has sent you away.

22 But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the LORD hath sent thee away.

22 But if I say this to the youth: ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you!’(Q) then go, for the Lord is sending you away.

22 But if I say this to the young man: "Look, the arrows are beyond you,' then go, for the LORD has sent you away.

23 And as for the matter which you and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD be between you and me forever.

23 (S)As for the (l)agreement of which you and I have spoken, behold, (T)the Lord is between you and me forever.”

23 And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD be between thee and me for ever.

23 As for the matter you and I have spoken about,(R) the Lord will be a witness(f) between you and me forever.”(S)

23 As for the matter about which you and I spoke, remember that the LORD is a witness between us forever."

24 So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat himself down to eat the feast.

24 So David hid in the field; and when the new moon came, the king sat down to eat food.

24 So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat.

24 So David hid in the field. At the New Moon, the king sat down to eat the meal.

24 David hid in the field. When the New Moon arrived, the king sat down to eat.

25 And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty.

25 The king sat on his seat as usual, the seat by the wall; then Jonathan rose up and Abner sat down by Saul’s side, but (U)David’s place was empty.

25 And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty.

25 He sat at his usual place on the seat by the wall. Jonathan sat facing him(g) and Abner took his place beside Saul, but David’s place was empty.(T)

25 The king sat down at his place as before, in the seat by the wall. Jonathan stood while Abner sat next to Saul, but David's place was empty.

26 Nevertheless Saul spoke not any thing that day: for he thought, Something has befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.

26 Nevertheless Saul did not speak anything that day, for he thought, “It is an accident, (V)he is not clean, surely he is not clean.”

26 Nevertheless Saul spake not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.

26 Saul did not say anything that day because he thought, “Something unexpected has happened; he must be ceremonially unclean—yes, that’s it, he is unclean.”(U)

26 Saul didn't say anything that day because he told himself, "Something has happened; he's unclean; surely he's not clean."

27 And it came to pass the next day, which was the second day of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Why does not the son of Jesse come to the table, neither yesterday, nor today?

27 It came about the next day, the second day of the new moon, that David’s place was empty; so Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why has the son of Jesse not come to the meal, either yesterday or today?”

27 And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?

27 However, the day after the New Moon, the second day, David’s place was still empty, and Saul asked his son Jonathan, “Why didn’t Jesse’s son come to the meal either yesterday or today?”

27 But the next day, on the second day of the New Moon, David's place was empty, and so Saul told his son Jonathan, "Why didn't Jesse's son come to the festival, either yesterday or today?"

28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem:

28 Jonathan then answered Saul, “(W)David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem,

28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem:

28 Jonathan answered, “David asked for my permission to go to Bethlehem.(V)

28 Jonathan answered Saul, "David urgently requested that I let him go to Bethlehem.

29 And he said, Let me go, I pray you; for our family has a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he has commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away, I pray you, and see my brethren. Therefore he comes not unto the king's table.

29 for he said, ‘Please (m)let me go, since our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to attend. And now, if I have found favor in your sight, please let me get away that I may see my brothers.’ For this reason he has not come to the king’s table.”

29 And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king's table.

29 He said, ‘Please let me go because our clan is holding a sacrifice in the town, and my brother has told me to be there. So now, if you are pleased with me, let me go so I can see my brothers.’ That’s why he didn’t come to the king’s table.”

29 He said, "Please let me go because our family has a sacrifice in the town, and my brother has ordered me to come. Now, if it's acceptable to you, please let me get away so I can see my brothers.' That's the reason he didn't come to the king's table."

30 Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, You son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and unto the shame of your mother's nakedness?

30 Then Saul’s anger burned against Jonathan and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you are choosing the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness?

30 Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?

30 Then Saul became angry with Jonathan and shouted, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you are siding with Jesse’s son to your own shame and to the disgrace of your mother?(h)

30 Saul flew into a rage and told Jonathan, "You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don't I know that you have chosen Jesse's son to your shame and to the shame of your mother who bore you?

31 For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the ground, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Therefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.

31 For (n)as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Therefore now, send and bring him to me, for (X)he (o)must surely die.”

31 For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.

31 Every day Jesse’s son lives on earth you and your kingship are not secure. Now send for him and bring him to me—he deserves to die.”(W)

31 As long as Jesse's son lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established! Now send someone and bring David to me. He's a dead man!"

32 And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Why shall he be slain? what has he done?

32 But Jonathan answered Saul his father and said to him, “(Y)Why should he be put to death? What has he done?”

32 And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?

32 Jonathan answered his father back: “Why is he to be killed? What has he done?”(X)

32 Jonathan asked his father Saul, "Why should he be killed? What did he do?"

33 And Saul cast a javelin at him to strike him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.

33 Then (Z)Saul hurled his spear at him to strike him down; (AA)so Jonathan knew that his father had decided to put David to death.

33 And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.

33 Then Saul threw his spear at Jonathan to kill him,(Y) so he knew that his father was determined to kill David.(Z)

33 Then Saul threw the spear that was beside him to strike Jonathan down. So Jonathan realized that his father was determined to kill David.

34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no food the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had caused him shame.

34 Then Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did not eat food on the second day of the new moon, for he was grieved over David because his father had dishonored him.

34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

34 He got up from the table in fierce anger and did not eat any food that second day of the New Moon, for he was grieved because of his father’s shameful behavior toward David.

34 So on the second day of the New Moon Jonathan angrily got up from the table without eating because he was upset about David, and because his father had humiliated him.

35 And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.

35 Now it came about in the morning that Jonathan went out into the field for the appointment with David, and a little lad was with him.

35 And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.

35 In the morning Jonathan went out to the field for the appointed meeting with David. A small young man was with him.

35 In the morning Jonathan, accompanied by a servant, went out to the field for the appointment with David.

36 And he said unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

36 He said to his lad, “(AB)Run, find now the arrows which I am about to shoot.” As the lad was running, he shot (p)an arrow past him.

36 And he said unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

36 He said to the young man, “Run and find the arrows I’m shooting.”(AA) As the young man ran, Jonathan shot an arrow beyond him.

36 Jonathan told his servant, "Run, find the arrows that I'm shooting." As the servant ran, Jonathan shot the arrow beyond him.

37 And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond you?

37 When the lad reached the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the lad and said, “(AC)Is not the arrow beyond you?”

37 And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?

37 He came to the location of the arrow that Jonathan had shot, but Jonathan called to him and said, “The arrow is beyond you, isn’t it?”(AB)

37 The servant came to the place where Jonathan had shot it, and Jonathan called out to him, "The arrow is beyond you, isn't it?"

38 And Jonathan called after the lad, Make haste, hurry, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

38 And Jonathan called after the lad, “Hurry, be quick, do not stay!” And Jonathan’s lad picked up the arrow and came to his master.

38 And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

38 Then Jonathan called to him, “Hurry up and don’t stop!” Jonathan’s young man picked up the arrow and returned to his master.

38 Jonathan called out to the servant, "Hurry, be quick, don't stand around." Jonathan's servant picked up the arrow and brought it to his master.

39 But the lad knew not anything: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

39 But the lad was not aware of anything; only Jonathan and David knew about the matter.

39 But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

39 He did not know anything; only Jonathan and David knew the arrangement.

39 The servant was not aware of anything. Only Jonathan and David understood what had happened.

40 And Jonathan gave his weapons unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.

40 Then Jonathan gave his weapons to his lad and said to him, “Go, bring them to the city.”

40 And Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.

40 Then Jonathan gave his equipment to the young man who was with him and said, “Go, take it back to the city.”

40 Then Jonathan gave his equipment to the servant who was with him and told him, "Go, take these things to the city."
