Saul Takes Revenge On The Priests Who Helped David

1 David therefore departed thence, and escaped, into the cave of Adullam, - and, when his brethren and all the household of his father heard it, they went down unto him, thither.

1 David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him.

1 So David departed from there and (A)escaped to ()the cave of Adullam; and when his brothers and all his father’s household heard of it, they went down there to him.

1 So David left Gath and took refuge in the cave of Adullam.(A) When David’s brothers and his father’s whole family heard, they went down and joined him there.

1 David left from there and escaped to the Cave of Adullam. His brothers and all his father's family heard about this and went down to him there.

2 And there gathered themselves unto him - every one that was in distress, and every one that had a creditor, and every one embittered in soul, and he came to be over them as a prince, - and there were with him, about four hundred men.

2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

2 Everyone who was in distress, and everyone who ()was in debt, and everyone who was ()discontented gathered to him; and he became captain over them. Now there were ()about four hundred men with him.

2 In addition, every man who was desperate, in debt, or discontented rallied around him, and he became their leader. About 400 men were with him.()

2 Everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was malcontent gathered around him, and he became their leader. There were about 400 men with him.

3 And David departed thence, to Mizpah of Moab, - and said unto the king of Moab, I pray thee, let my father and my mother dwell with you, until that I know what God will do for me.

3 And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.

3 And David went from there to Mizpah of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother come and stay with you until I know what God will do for me.”

3 From there David went to Mizpeh of Moab where he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and mother stay with you until I know what God will do for me.”

3 David went from there to Mizpah of Moab, and he told the king of Moab, "Please let my father and mother come and stay with you until I know what God is going to do for me."

4 So he set them before the king of Moab, - and they dwelt with him, all the days that David was in the fortress.

4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold.

4 Then he left them with the king of Moab; and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.

4 So he left them in the care of the king of Moab, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the stronghold.

4 David left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time David was in the stronghold.

5 Then said Gad the prophet unto David - Thou must not abide in the fortress, go and get thee into the land of Judah. So David departed, and entered the forest of Hereth.

5 And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.

5 ()The prophet Gad said to David, “Do not stay in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.” So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.

5 Then the prophet Gad() said to David, “Don’t stay in the stronghold. Leave and return to the land of Judah.” So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.

5 The prophet Gad told David, "Don't remain in the stronghold. Go and enter the territory of Judah." So David left and went into the forest of Hereth.

Saul Kills The Priests At Nob

6 And, when Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him - Saul, being seated in Gibeah under the tamarisk-tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants stationed by him, -

6 When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;)

6 Then Saul heard that David and the men who were with him had been discovered. Now ()Saul was sitting in Gibeah, under the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him.

6 Saul heard that David and his men had been discovered. At that time Saul was in Gibeah, sitting under the tamarisk tree() at the high place. His spear was in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him.

6 When Saul heard that David and the men who were with him had been found, he was sitting in Gibeah, under the tamarisk tree on the hill, with his spear in his hand. All his officials were standing around him.

7 then said Saul unto his servants who were stationed by him - Hear, I pray you, ye Benjamites! What! even to all of you, will the son of Jesse give fields and vineyards? All of you, will he appoint to be princes of thousands, and princes of hundreds?

7 Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;

7 Saul said to his servants who stood around him, “Hear now, O Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse also give to all of you fields and vineyards? ()Will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?

7 Saul said to his servants, “Listen, men of Benjamin: Is Jesse’s son going to give all of you fields and vineyards? Do you think he’ll make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?()

7 Saul told his officials who were standing around him, "Listen, men of Benjamin! Will Jesse's son also give fields and vineyards to all of you? Will he make all of you officers over thousands and officers over hundreds?

8 That ye have conspired, all of you, against me, and there is none to uncover mine ear as to the covenanting of my son with the son of Jesse? And none from among you that taketh pity upon me, and that uncovereth mine ear to this , - that, mine own son, hath stirred up, my servants, against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

8 For all of you have conspired against me so that there is no one who ()discloses to me ()when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you ()who is sorry for me or ()discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me to lie in ambush, as it is this day.”

8 That’s why all of you have conspired against me! Nobody tells me() when my own son makes a covenant with Jesse’s son.() None of you cares about me() or tells me() that my son has stirred up my own servant to wait in ambush for me, as is the case today.”

8 But all of you have conspired against me, and no one tells me about my son's covenant with Jesse's son. None of you feels sorry for me and tells me that my son has stirred up my servant against me to lie in wait, as he's doing this day."

9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite - he, being stationed near the servants of Saul - and said, - I saw the son of Jesse coming into Nob, unto Ahimelech son of Ahitub;

9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

9 Then (I)Doeg the Edomite, who was ()standing by the servants of Saul, said, “()I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to ()Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

9 Then Doeg the Edomite,(H) who was in charge of Saul’s servants, answered: “I saw Jesse’s son come to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob.()

9 Then Doeg the Edomite, who was in charge of Saul's servants answered: "I saw Jesse's son coming to Nob to Ahitub's son Ahimelech.

10 Then enquired he for him of Yahweh, Provisions also, gave he unto him, - and, the sword of Goliath the Philistine, gave he unto him.

10 And he inquired of the LORD for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.

10 ()He inquired of the Lord for him, ()gave him provisions, and ()gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”

10 Ahimelech inquired of the Lord for him() and gave him provisions.() He also gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”()

10 Ahimelech inquired of the LORD for him, gave him provisions, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine."

Slaughter Of The Priests

11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech, son of Ahitub, the priest, and all the house of his father - the priests, who were in Nob, - and they came, all of them, unto the king.

11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king.

11 Then the king sent someone to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s household, the priests who were in Nob; and all of them came to the king.

11 The king sent messengers to summon Ahimelech the priest, son of Ahitub, and his father’s whole family, who were priests in Nob. All of them came to the king.

11 The king sent for Ahitub's son Ahimelech the priest and for all his father's family who were priests at Nob. All of them came to the king.

12 And Saul said, Hear, I pray thee, thou son of Ahitub! And he said - Behold me! my lord.

12 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.

12 Saul said, “Listen now, son of Ahitub.” And he ()answered, “Here I am, my lord.”

12 Then Saul said, “Listen, son of Ahitub!”“I’m at your service,() my lord,” he said.

12 Saul said, "Listen, son of Ahitub!" And he said, "Here I am, your majesty."

13 And Saul said unto him, Wherefore have ye conspired against me, thou, and the son of Jesse, - in that thou gavest him bread and a sword, and didst enquire for him of God, that he might rise up against me, that he might lie in wait, as at this day?

13 And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

13 Saul then said to him, “Why have you and the son of Jesse conspired against me, in that you have given him bread and a sword and have inquired of God for him, so that he would rise up against me ()by lying in ambush as it is this day?”

13 Saul asked him, “Why did you and Jesse’s son conspire against me? You gave him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him, so he could rise up against me and wait in ambush, as is the case today.”()

13 Then Saul asked him, "Why have you conspired against me you and Jesse's son by giving him food and a sword, and by inquiring of God for him, so he can rise up against me to lie in wait, as he's doing today?"

14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, - But who, among all thy servants, like David, is, faithful, being son-in-law to the king, and, cometh near to have audience with thee, and is, honoured in thy household?

14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house?

14 ()Then Ahimelech answered the king and said, “And who among all your servants is as faithful as David, even the king’s son-in-law, who ()is captain over your guard, and is honored in your house?

14 Ahimelech replied to the king: “Who among all your servants is as faithful as David?() He is the king’s son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard, and honored in your house.

14 Ahimelech answered the king, "Who among all your officials is as faithful as David? He is the king's son-in-law, the captain of your bodyguard, and he's honored in your household.

15 Did I, that day, begin to enquire for him of God? Far from me! Let not the king impute to his servant such a thing, nor to any of the household of my father, for thy servant knoweth nothing of all this, less or more.

15 Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.

15 Did I just begin ()to inquire of God for him today? Far be it from me! ()Do not let the king impute anything to his servant or to any of the household of my father, for your servant knows nothing ()at all of this whole affair.”

15 Was today the first time I inquired of God for him?() Of course not! Please don’t let the king make an accusation against your servant or any of my father’s household, for your servant didn’t have any idea() about all this.”

15 Is today the first time I inquired of God for him? Absolutely not! The king shouldn't accuse his servant, or any of my father's family of anything, because your servant didn't know anything at all about this."

16 And the king said: Thou shalt, die, Ahimelech, - thou and all the household of thy father.

16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house.

16 But the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s household!”

16 But the king said, “You will die, Ahimelech—you and your father’s whole family!”

16 The king said, "Ahimelech, you will surely die, you and all your father's family!"

17 And the king said unto the runners that were stationed by him - Turn ye round and put to death the priests of Yahweh, because, their hand also, is with David, and because they knew that he was, in flight, and unveiled not mine ear. But the servants of the king were not willing to thrust forth their hand, to fall upon the priests of Yahweh.

17 And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.

17 And (S)the king said to the ()guards who were attending him, “Turn around and put the priests of the Lord to death, because their hand also is with David and because they knew that he was fleeing and did not ()reveal it to me.” But the ()servants of the king were not willing to put forth their hands to ()attack the priests of the Lord.

17 Then the king ordered the guards standing by him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord() because they sided with David. For they knew he was fleeing, but they didn’t tell me.”() But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to execute the priests of the Lord.

17 The king told the guards, who were standing beside him, "Turn and kill the priests of the LORD because they supported David, and because they knew he was fleeing, but didn't inform me." But the officials of the king did not want to lift their hands to attack the priests of the LORD.

18 Then said the king to Doeg, Turn, thou, and fall upon the priests. So Doeg the Edomite turned, and, himself, fell upon the priests, and put to death, that day, four score and five men bearing an ephod of linen;

18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.

18 Then the king said to Doeg, “You turn around and ()attack the priests.” And Doeg the Edomite turned around and ()attacked the priests, and ()he killed that day eighty-five men ()who wore the linen ephod.

18 So the king said to Doeg, “Go and execute the priests!” So Doeg the Edomite went and executed the priests himself. On that day, he killed 85 men() who wore linen ephods.()

18 Then the king told Doeg, "You turn and attack the priests." Doeg the Edomite turned and attacked the priests. That day he killed eighty-five men who carry the linen ephod.

19 Nob also, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, - and oxen and asses and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

19 And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

19 And ()he struck Nob the city of the priests with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and infants; also oxen, donkeys, and sheep he struck with the edge of the sword.

19 He also struck down Nob, the city of the priests, with the sword—both men and women, children and infants, oxen, donkeys, and sheep.()

19 He attacked the priestly town of Nob with the sword. Men and women, children and infants, oxen, donkeys and sheep were put to the sword.

20 But there escaped one son of Ahimelech, son of Ahitub, whose, name, was Abiathar, - and he fled after David.

20 And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.

20 But ()one son of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, ()escaped and fled after David.

20 However, one of the sons of Ahimelech son of Ahitub escaped. His name was Abiathar,() and he fled to David.()

20 One man, Ahimelech's son Abiathar, a grandson of Ahitub, escaped and fled to David.

21 So Abiathar told David, - that Saul had slain the priests of Yahweh.

21 And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the LORD'S priests.

21 Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord.

21 Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord.

21 Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the LORD.

22 Then said David to Abiathar - I knew, that day, when Doeg the Edomite was, there, that he would, surely tell, Saul. I, am chargeable with all the lives of the house of thy father.

22 And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's house.

22 Then David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, when ()Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have brought about the death of every person in your father’s household.

22 Then David said to Abiathar, “I knew that Doeg the Edomite() was there that day and that he was sure to report to Saul. I myself am responsible for() the lives of everyone in your father’s family.

22 David told Abiathar, "I knew on that day when Doeg the Edomite was there that he would certainly tell Saul! I'm responsible for the deaths of your father's whole family.

23 Abide with me! do not fear, for, whoso seeketh my life, seeketh thy life, - for, in safeguard, shall thou be, with me.

23 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.

23 Stay with me; do not be afraid, for (AA)he who seeks my life seeks your life, for you are ()safe with me.”

23 Stay with me. Don’t be afraid, for the one who wants to take my life wants to take your life.() You will be safe with me.”

23 Stay with me, and don't be afraid because the one who seeks my life, seeks your life. Indeed, you will be safe with me."
