The Reign Of Jehoram
1 Jehoshaphat died and was buried in the royal tombs in David's City and his son Jehoram succeeded him as king.
1 Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.

Jehoram's Reign
2 Jehoram son of King Jehoshaphat of Judah had six brothers: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael, and Shephatiah.
2 And he had brethren the sons of Jehoshaphat, Azariah, and Jehiel, and Zechariah, and Azariah, and Michael, and Shephatiah: all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.
2 He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, (a)Azaryahu, Michael and Shephatiah. All these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king (B)of Israel.
2 He had brothers, sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.(b)
2 Jehoshaphat's sons, Jehoram's brothers, included Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah. All of these were sons of Jehoshaphat, king of Israel.
3 Their father gave them large amounts of gold, silver, and other valuable possessions, and placed each one in charge of one of the fortified cities of Judah. But because Jehoram was the oldest, Jehoshaphat made him his successor.
3 And their father gave them great gifts of silver, and of gold, and of precious things, with fenced cities in Judah: but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram; because he was the firstborn.

4 Jehoram was in firm control of the kingdom. He had all his brothers killed, and also some Israelite officials.
4 Now when Jehoram was risen up to the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself, and slew all his brethren with the sword, and divers also of the princes of Israel.
4 Now when Jehoram had (b)taken over the kingdom of his father and made himself (c)secure, he (D)killed all his brothers with the sword, and some of the rulers of Israel also.
4 When Jehoram had established himself over his father’s kingdom, he strengthened his position by killing with the sword all his brothers as well as some of the princes of Israel.
4 But after Jehoram had assumed the throne and consolidated his rule over his father's kingdom, he executed all of his brothers, along with some of the rulers of Israel.
6 He followed the wicked example of King Ahab and the other kings of Israel. He married one of Ahab's daughters. He sinned against Jehovah.
6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD.
6 (F)He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab did ((G)for Ahab’s daughter was his wife), and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.
6 He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done,(D) for Ahab’s daughter was his wife.(E) He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight,
6 He lived like the kings of Israel, following the example of Ahab's dynasty, since he had married Ahab's daughter, and he practiced what the LORD considered to be evil.
7 Jehovah was not willing to destroy the dynasty of David. This is because he made a covenant with David and promised that his descendants would always continue to rule.
7 Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
7 Yet the Lord was not willing to destroy the house of David because of the covenant which He had made with David, (H)and since He had promised to give a lamp to him and his sons forever.
7 but because of the covenant the Lord had made with David, He was unwilling to destroy the house of David since the Lord had promised(F) to give a lamp(G) to David and to his sons forever.
7 Nevertheless, the Lord was unwilling to destroy David's dynasty because of the covenant that he had made with David, especially since he had promised to give him and to his sons the reigning presence of an heir forever.
Edom Wins Independence From Judah
8 During Jehoram's time Edom rebelled against Judah and chose its own king.
8 In his days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made themselves a king.
8 During Jehoram’s reign, Edom rebelled against Judah’s domination and appointed their own king.
8 Nevertheless, Edom revolted against Judah's rule and set up their own king to rule them during Jehoram's reign.
9 Jehoram took all his chariot commanders to attack. The Edomites and their chariot commanders surrounded him. He got up during the night and broke through their lines.
9 Then Jehoram went forth with his princes, and all his chariots with him: and he rose up by night, and smote the Edomites which compassed him in, and the captains of the chariots.
9 Then Jehoram crossed over with his commanders and all his chariots with him. And he arose by night and struck down the Edomites who were surrounding him and the commanders of the chariots.
9 So Jehoram crossed into Edom with his commanders and all his chariots. Then at night he set out to attack the Edomites who had surrounded him and the chariot commanders.
9 So Jehoram invaded Edom with his commanders and his chariots by night and killed the Edomites who had surrounded him and his chariot commanders.
10 So Edom rebelled against Judah's rule and is still independent today. At the same time Edom rebelled, Libnah rebelled because Jehoram had abandoned Jehovah the God of his ancestors.
10 So the Edomites revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day. The same time also did Libnah revolt from under his hand; because he had forsaken the LORD God of his fathers.
10 So Edom revolted (e)against Judah to this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time (f)against his rule, because he had forsaken the Lord God of his fathers.
10 And now Edom is still in rebellion against Judah’s domination today. Libnah also rebelled at that time against his domination because he had abandoned Yahweh, the God of his ancestors.
10 Edom remains in revolt against Judah to this day. Libnah revolted against Jehoram's rule, too, because he had abandoned the LORD God of his ancestors.
11 Jehoram made illegal places of worship in the hills of Judah. This caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to chase after foreign gods as if they were prostitutes. So he led Judah astray.
11 Moreover he made high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit fornication, and compelled Judah thereto.
11 Moreover, (J)he made high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem (K)to play the harlot and led Judah astray.
11 Jehoram also built high places(H) in the hills(c) of Judah, and he caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to prostitute themselves,(I) and he led Judah astray.
11 In addition to all of this, he built high places in the mountains of Judah, led the inhabitants of Jerusalem into cultic sexual immorality, and made Judah go astray.
Elijah's Letter To Jehoram
12 A letter came to him from the prophet Elijah. It read: This is what Jehovah the God of your ancestor David says: You have not followed the ways of your father Jehoshaphat or the ways of King Asa of Judah.
12 And there came a writing to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah,
12 Then a letter came to him from Elijah the prophet saying, “Thus says the Lord God of your father David, ‘Because (L)you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father (M)and the ways of Asa king of Judah,
12 Then a letter came to Jehoram from Elijah the prophet, saying:This is what Yahweh, the God of your ancestor David says: “Because you have not walked in the ways of your father Jehoshaphat(J) or in the ways of Asa king of Judah(K)
12 After this, a letter arrived from Elijah the prophet. It said:
13 Instead, you have followed the ways of the kings of Israel. You, like Ahab's family, have caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to chase after foreign gods as if they were prostitutes. You have killed your brothers, your father's family. Your brothers were better than you.
13 But hast walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and hast made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to go a whoring, like to the whoredoms of the house of Ahab, and also hast slain thy brethren of thy father's house, which were better than thyself:
13 but (N)have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and have caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to play the harlot (O)as the house of Ahab played the harlot, and you (P)have also killed your brothers, (g)your own family, who were better than you,
13 but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel,(L) have caused Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to prostitute themselves like the house of Ahab(M) prostituted itself, and also have killed your brothers,(N) your father’s family, who were better than you,
13 "This is what the LORD God of your ancestor David says: "You haven't lived like your father Jehoshaphat and like King Asa of Judah. Instead, you have lived like the kings of Israel by causing Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit cultic sexual immorality just like Ahab's dynasty did! And you've killed your brothers who were better than you your own father's dynasty!
14 Jehovah will strike a great blow to your people, your sons, your wives, and all your property because you did this.
14 Behold, with a great plague will the LORD smite thy people, and thy children, and thy wives, and all thy goods:
14 behold, the Lord is going to strike your people, your sons, your wives and all your possessions with a great (h)calamity;
14 Yahweh is now about to strike your people, your sons, your wives, and all your possessions with a horrible affliction.
14 Look what's going to happen! The LORD is going to strike your people, your children, your wives, and everything you own with a massive tragedy.
15 You will be affected by a painful stomach disease and suffer until you die.
15 And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy bowels, until thy bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day.
15 and (Q)you will suffer (i)severe sickness, a disease of your bowels, until your bowels come out because of the sickness, day by day.’”
15 You yourself will be struck with many illnesses, including a disease of the intestines, until your intestines come out day after day because of the disease.”(O)
15 And as for you, you will suffer from a serious disease of your bowels. Eventually, day-by-day you will excrete your own bowels because of this disease."
Jehoram's Last Days
16 Later Jehovah caused the Philistines and the Arabs who lived near the Ethiopians to become angry with Jehoram.
16 Moreover the LORD stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, that were near the Ethiopians:
16 Then (R)the Lord stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines and (S)the Arabs who (j)bordered the Ethiopians;
16 The Lord put it into the mind of the Philistines and the Arabs(P) who live near the Cushites to attack Jehoram.(Q)
16 The LORD also provoked the attitude of the Philistines and the Arabs who bordered the Ethiopians against Jehoram,
17 They invaded Judah and stole the royal property from the palace. They led Jehoram's wives and sons away as prisoners. The only one left behind was Ahaziah, his youngest son.
17 And they came up into Judah, and brake into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king's house, and his sons also, and his wives; so that there was never a son left him, save Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.
17 and they came against Judah and invaded it, and carried away all the possessions found in the king’s house together with his sons and his wives, so that no son was left to him except (k)(T)Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.
17 So they went to war against Judah and invaded it. They carried off all the possessions found in the king’s palace and also his sons and wives; not a son was left to him except Jehoahaz,(d)(R) his youngest son.
17 and they attacked Judah, invading it and carried off everything he owned in his royal palace, along with all of his sons and wives except for his youngest son Jehoahaz.
18 After this happened; Jehovah struck Jehoram with an incurable stomach disease.
18 And after all this the LORD smote him in his bowels with an incurable disease.
18 After all these things, the Lord afflicted him in his intestines with an incurable disease.
18 After all of this happened, the LORD struck him in his bowels with an incurable illness.
19 Two years later Jehoram died in terrible pain. No bonfire was built to honor him. The people had done this for his ancestors, but not him.
19 And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.
19 Now it came about in the course of time, at the end of two years, that his bowels came out because of his sickness and he died in great pain. And his people made no fire for him like (V)the fire for his fathers.
19 This continued day after day until two full years passed. Then his intestines came out because of his disease, and he died from severe(e) illnesses. But his people did not hold a fire in his honor like the fire in honor of his fathers.(S)
19 In due course, as time passed, two years later his bowels came out because of his sickness and he died in agony. His people lit no memorial bonfire for him as they had done for his ancestors.
20 Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king. He ruled eight years from Jerusalem. He died, and no one even felt sad. He was buried in Jerusalem, but not in the royal tombs.
20 Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years, and departed without being desired. Howbeit they buried him in the city of David, but not in the sepulchres of the kings.
20 He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years; and he departed (l)(W)with no one’s regret, and they buried him in the city of David, (X)but not in the tombs of the kings.
20 Jehoram(T) was 32 years old when he became king; he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. He died to no one’s regret(f)(U) and was buried in the city of David but not in the tombs of the kings.(V)
20 Jehoram was 32 years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for eight years. He left this earth to nobody's regret and they buried him in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
