1 This is the third time I am coming to you: "in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established."
1 This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.
1 This will be the third time I am coming to you. "Every accusation must be verified by two or three witnesses."
2 I told you once before, and now being absent I write to forewarn you and all that have sinned, that when I shall arrive, I will not spare them;
2 I have previously said when present the second time, and though now absent I say in advance to those who have (C)sinned in the past and to all the rest as well, that (D)if I come again I will not (E)spare anyone,
2 I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not spare:
2 I have already warned those who sinned previously and all the rest. Although I am absent now, I am warning them as I did on my second visit: If I come back, I will not spare you,
3 since you demand a proof of my mission from Christ, who with regard to you has shown no want of power among you.
3 Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, which to you-ward is not weak, but is mighty in you.
3 since you want proof that the Messiah is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you but is making his power felt among you.
4 for tho' he was crucified with the appearance of weakness, yet he lives by the power of God; tho' we are afflicted upon his account, we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.
4 For indeed He was (I)crucified because of weakness, yet He lives (J)because of the power of God. For we also are (K)weak (d)in Him, yet (L)we will live with Him because of the power of God directed toward you.
4 For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.
4 Though he was crucified in weakness, he lives by God's power. We are weak with him, but by God's power we will live for you.
5 Examine yourselves, whether you be in the faith; bring yourselves to the proof; are you so little acquainted with yourselves, as not to know whether Jesus Christ be in you? but if you are destitute of proofs,
5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
5 Keep examining yourselves to see whether you are continuing in the faith. Test yourselves! You know, don't you, that Jesus the Messiah lives in you? Could it be that you are failing the test?
6 I trust you shall know that we are not so destitute,
6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.
6 And I hope you will recognize that we do not fail the test.
6 I hope you will realize that we haven't failed our test.
7 now I pray God that I may not punish you; not that I may show you my proofs to your cost, but that by your acting honestly, I may be as if I had no proofs:
7 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates.
7 We pray to God that you will not do anything wrong not to show that we have not failed the test, but so that you may do what is right, even if we seem to have failed.
8 for I can employ no power against the truth, but for the truth.
8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but only for the truth.
8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
8 For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.
9 I am therefore glad when I am disarm'd by the strength of your integrity: and this is what I pray for, even your perfection.
9 For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong: and this also we wish, even your perfection.
9 We are glad when we are weak and you are strong. That is what we are praying for your maturity.
10 these things therefore I write to you being absent, that when I come I may not use severity, according to the power which the Lord hath given me for edification, and not for destruction.
10 For this reason I am writing these things while absent, so that when present (R)I need not use (S)severity, in accordance with the (T)authority which the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.
10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction.
10 For this reason I am writing this while I am away from you: When I come I do not want to be severe in using the authority the Lord gave me to build you up and not to tear you down.
11 Finally, brethren, be cheerful: redress yourselves, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.
11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.
11 Finally, brothers, goodbye. Keep on growing to maturity. Keep listening to my appeals. Continue agreeing with each other and living in peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.
14 the favour of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communication of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. amen.
14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus the Messiah, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you!
