1 Now it happened that during the third year of the reign of Elah's son Hoshea, king of Israel, that Ahaz' son Hezekiah became king.

2 Twenty five years old was he, when he began to reign, and reigned twenty nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Abi the daughter of Zachariah,

2 He was (C)twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah.

2 Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.

2 He was 25 years old when he became king and reigned 29 years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Abi(a) daughter of Zechariah.

2 He was 25 years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for 29 years. His mother was Zechariah's daughter Abi.

3 and he did that pleased the LORD in all things, like to David his father.

3 (D)He did right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done.

3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.

3 He did what was right in the Lord’s sight just as his ancestor David had done.(C)

3 He did what the LORD considered to be right, according to everything that his ancestor David had done.

4 He put away the hill altars, and brake the images and cut down the groves, and all to brake the brazen serpent that Moses made - for unto those days the children of Israel did burn sacrifice to it, and called it Nehushtan.

4 (E)He removed the high places and broke down the sacred pillars and cut down the (a)Asherah. He also broke in pieces (F)the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the sons of Israel burned incense to it; and it was called (b)Nehushtan.

4 He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.

4 He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles.(D) He broke into pieces the bronze snake that Moses made,(E) for the Israelites burned incense to it up to that time. He called it Nehushtan.(b)

4 He removed the high places, demolished the sacred pillars, and tore down the Asherah poles. He also demolished the bronze serpent that Moses had crafted, because the Israelis had been burning incense to it right up until that time. Hezekiah called it a piece of brass.

5 He trusted in the LORD God of Israel, so that after him came none like him among all the kings of Judah, neither among them that went before him.

5 (G)He trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel; (H)so that after him there was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor among those who were before him.

5 He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.

5 Hezekiah trusted in the Lord God of Israel;(F) not one of the kings of Judah was like him, either before him or after him.(G)

5 He trusted the LORD God of Israel, and after him there were none like him among all the kings of Judah,

6 He clave to the LORD and departed not from him, but kept his commandments which the LORD commanded Moses.

6 For he (I)clung to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses.

6 For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.

6 He remained faithful to Yahweh(H) and did not turn from following Him but kept the commands the Lord had commanded Moses.

6 because he depended on the LORD, not abandoning pursuit of him, and keeping the LORD's commands that he had commanded Moses.

7 And the LORD was with him. And whatsoever he took in hand he did it wisely. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria and served him not.

7 (J)And the Lord was with him; wherever he went he prospered. And (K)he rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.

7 And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

7 The Lord was with him, and wherever he went he prospered.(I) He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.(J)

7 So the LORD was with him, and Hezekiah prospered wherever he went, even when he rebelled against the king of Assyria, refusing to serve him.

8 He beat the Philistines even unto Gaza and the coasts thereof, both in castles of garrisons and strong cities too.

8 (L)He (c)defeated the Philistines as far as Gaza and its territory, from (M)watchtower to fortified city.

8 He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.

12 because they would not hearken unto the voice of the LORD their God. But transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would neither hear nor do.

12 because they (Q)did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed His covenant, even all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded; they would neither listen nor do it.

12 Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.

12 because they did not listen to the voice of the Lord their God but violated His covenant—all He had commanded Moses the servant of the Lord. They did not listen, and they did not obey.(O)

12 because they would not obey the voice of the LORD their God. Instead, they transgressed his covenant, including everything that Moses, the servant of the LORD, had commanded, by neither listening nor putting what he had commanded into practice.

14 Whereupon Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, "I have offended. But depart from me, and what thou puttest on me that I will bear." And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

14 Then Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, “(S)I have done wrong. (d)Withdraw from me; whatever you (e)impose on me I will bear.” So the king of Assyria (f)required of Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

14 So Hezekiah king of Judah sent word to the king of Assyria at Lachish,(Q) saying, “I have done wrong;(R) withdraw from me. Whatever you demand from me, I will pay.” The king of Assyria demanded 11 tons(c) of silver and one ton(d) of gold from King Hezekiah of Judah.

14 So Hezekiah sent this message to the king of Assyria at Lachish: "I have offended you. Withdraw from me, and I'll accept whatever tribute you impose." So the king of Assyria required Hezekiah to pay him 300 talents of silver and 30 talents of gold.

16 At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.

Assyrians Advise Against Trust In Yahweh

19 And then Rabshakeh said unto them, "Tell ye Hezekiah, I pray you, 'Thus sayeth the great king, the king of Assyria: What confidence is this that thou hast?

19 Then Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “(Y)What is this confidence that you (h)have?

19 And Rabshakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

19 Then(Z) the Rabshakeh said to them, “Tell Hezekiah this is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: ‘What are you relying on?(f)(AA)

19 Rab-shakeh told them, "Tell Hezekiah right now, "This is what the great king, the king of Assyria says:

20 Thou wilt haply speak a light word, that thou hast counsel and power to make war. On whom then dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?

20 You say (but they are (i)only empty words), ‘I have counsel and strength for the war.’ Now on whom do you rely, (Z)that you have rebelled against me?

20 Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?

20 You think mere words are strategy and strength for war. What are you now relying on so that you have rebelled against me?(AB)

20 ""Why are you so confident? You're saying but they're only empty words "I have enough advice and resources to conduct warfare!'

21 Dost thou trust to the staff of this broken reed Egypt, on which if a man lean it will run into his hand and pierce it? For even so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.

21 Now behold, you (j)(AA)rely on the staff of this crushed reed, even on Egypt; on which if a man leans, it will go into his (k)hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him.

21 Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.

21 Look, you are now trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff(AC) that will enter and pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it.(AD) This is how Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who trust in him.

21 ""Now who are you relying on, that you have rebelled against me? Look, you're trusting on Egypt to lean on like a staff, but it's a crushed reed, and if you lean on it, it will collapse and pierce your hand. Pharaoh, king of Egypt, is just like that to everyone who relies on him!

22 If ye say unto me, 'We trust in the LORD our God' - Is not that he whose hill altars and other altars too, Hezekiah hath put down, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, 'Bow yourselves before this altar here in Jerusalem'?

22 But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the Lord our God,’ is it not He whose high places and (AB)whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?

22 But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?

22 Suppose you say to me: We trust in the Lord our God. Isn’t He the One whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed,(AE) saying to Judah and to Jerusalem: You must worship at this altar in Jerusalem?’

22 ""Of course, you might tell me, "We rely on the LORD our God!" But isn't it he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has demolished, all the while telling Jerusalem, "You're to worship in front of this altar in Jerusalem?"'

23 And now join thyself to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able to set riders upon them:

23 Now therefore, (l)come, make a bargain with my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.

23 Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.

23 “So now make a bargain with my master the king of Assyria. I’ll give you 2,000 horses if you’re able to supply riders for them!

23 ""Come now, and make a deal with my master, the king of Assyria, and I'll give you 2,000 horses, if you can furnish them with riders.

24 and, if thou be not, how then art thou able to resist one of the least dukes of my master's servants? Or trustest thou to Egypt for chariots and horsemen?

24 How then can you (m)repulse one (n)official of the least of my master’s servants, and (o)rely on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

24 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

24 How then can you drive back a single officer(AF) among the least of my master’s servants and trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

24 How can you refuse even one official from the least of my master's servants and rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?

25 Moreover, thinkest thou that I am come without the bidding of the LORD to this place to destroy it? Nay: the LORD said to me, 'Go up to this land, and destroy it.''"

25 Have I now come up (p)without the Lord’s approval against this place to destroy it? The Lord said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”’”

25 Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

25 Have I attacked this place to destroy it without the Lord’s approval?(AG) The Lord said to me, ‘Attack this land and destroy it.’”

25 "Now then, haven't I come up apart from the LORD to attack and destroy this place? The LORD told me, "Go up against this land and destroy it!'"'"

26 Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah and Shebnah and Joah, to Rabshakeh, "Speak, we pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrians' language, for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews' tongue, in the ears of the people that are on the walls."

26 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebnah and Joah, said to Rabshakeh, “Speak now to your servants in Aramaic, for we (q)understand it; and do not speak with us in (r)(AC)Judean in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”

26 Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews' language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

26 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, Shebnah, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic,(AH) since we understand it. Don’t speak with us in Hebrew(g) within earshot of the people on the wall.”

26 At this, Hilkiah's son Eliakim, Shebnah, and Joah asked Rab-shakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, because we understand it, but don't speak the language of Judah to us within the hearing of the people who are on the wall."

27 And Rabshakeh said unto them, "Hath my master sent me only to thy master and to thee, to speak these words? Or rather to the men that keep on the walls, that they shall eat their own dirt, and drink their own piss with you?"

27 But Rabshakeh said to them, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, doomed to eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”

27 But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?

27 But the Rabshakeh said to them, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you to speak these words? Hasn’t he also sent me to the men who sit on the wall, destined with you to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?”(AI)

27 But Rab-shakeh spoke to them, "Has my master sent me to talk about this just to your master and to you, and not also to the men who are sitting on the wall, who will soon be eating their own feces and drinking their own urine along with you?"

28 And so Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spake saying, "Hear the saying of the great king, the king of Assyria!

28 Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in Judean, (s)saying, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria.

28 Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:

28 The Rabshakeh stood and called out loudly in Hebrew.(h) Then he spoke: “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria.

28 Then Rab-shakeh stood up and cried out loud, "Listen to what the great king, the king of Assyria has to say.

29 Thus sayeth the king, 'Let not Hezekiah beguile you, for he is not able to deliver you out of mine hand:

29 Thus says the king, ‘(AD)Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you from (t)my hand;

29 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:

29 This is what the king says: ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive(AJ) you; he can’t deliver you from my hand.(AK)

29 This is what the king says:

30 neither let Hezekiah make you trust to the LORD, saying: the LORD will surely rid us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hands of the king of Assyria.'

30 nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, “The Lord will surely deliver us, and this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”

30 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

30 Don’t let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord by saying: Certainly the Lord will deliver us! This city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.’(AL)

30 "Don't let Hezekiah deceive you, because he will prove to be unable to deliver you from my control. And don't let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD by telling you, "The LORD will certainly deliver us and this city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria."

31 Hearken not unto Hezekiah, for thus sayeth the king of Assyria, 'Deal kindly with me, and come out to me. And then eat every man of his own vine, and of his own fig tree, and drink every man of the water of his own well,

31 Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, “(u)Make your peace with me and come out to me, and eat (AE)each of his vine and each of his fig tree and drink each of the waters of his own cistern,

31 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:

31 “Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: ‘Make peace(i) with me and surrender to me. Then every one of you may eat from his own vine and his own fig tree,(AM) and every one may drink water from his own cistern

31 Don't listen to Hezekiah, because this is what the king of Assyria says: "Make peace with me and come out to me! Each of you will eat from his own vine. Each will eat from his own fig tree. And each of you will drink water from his own cistern

32 till I come and fetch you to as good a land as yours is: a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees, of oil and of honey. And ye shall live and not die. And hearken not unto Hezekiah for he will beguile you, saying: the LORD shall deliver us.'

32 until I come and take you away (AF)to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey, that you may live and not die.” But do not listen to Hezekiah when he misleads you, saying, “The Lord will deliver us.”

32 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.

32 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey(AN)—so that you may live(AO) and not die. But don’t listen to Hezekiah when he misleads you, saying: The Lord will deliver us.

32 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, one overflowing with grain and new wine, a land filled with bread and vineyards, with olive trees and honey, so you may live and not die."

33 For have the Gods of the nations delivered any God his land, out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

33 (AG)Has any one of the gods of the nations delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?

33 Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

33 Has any of the gods of the nations ever delivered(AP) his land from the power of the king of Assyria?

33 "But don't listen to Hezekiah when he misleads you by saying, "The LORD will deliver us!" Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land from control by the king of Assyria?

34 Where are the Gods of Hamath and of Arpad? Where are the Gods of Sepharvaim, of Hena and Ivvah? Did they deliver Samaria out of mine hands?

34 (AH)Where are the gods of Hamath and (AI)Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena and (v)(AJ)Ivvah? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?

34 Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?

34 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?(j) Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?(AQ)

34 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sephar-vaim, of Hena, and Ivvah? Have they delivered Samaria from my control?

35 What God of any land hath delivered his land out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?"

35 Who among all the gods of the lands (w)have delivered their land from my hand, (AK)that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?’”

35 Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?

35 Who among all the gods of the lands has delivered his land from my power? So will the Lord deliver Jerusalem?’”(AR)
