1 And it will be after this, and the king of the sons of Ammon will die, and Hanun his son will reign in his stead.
1 (A)Now it happened afterwards that (B)the king of the Ammonites died, and Hanun his son became king in his place.
1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.
1 Sometime later, the Ammonite king died and his son Hanun succeeded him as king,
2 And David will say, I will do mercy with Hanun son of Nahash, as his father did mercy with me. And David will send to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants will come to the land of the sons of Ammon.
2 Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of (C)Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent (a)some of his servants to console him concerning his father. But when David’s servants came to the land of the Ammonites,
2 Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.
2 Then David said, “I’ll show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me.”So David sent his emissaries to console Hanun concerning his father. However, when they arrived in the land of the Ammonites,
2 so David told himself, "I will be loyal to Nahash's son Hanun, since in his loyalty his father showed gracious love to me." So David sent a delegation to Hanun to console him about his loss of his father.
3 And the chiefs of the sons of Ammon will say to Hanun their lord, Is David honoring thy father in thine eyes, that he sent comforters to thee? is it not for the sake of searching out the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it, David sent his servants to thee?
3 the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, “(b)Do you think that David is honoring your father because he has sent consolers to you? (D)Has David not sent his servants to you in order to search the city, to spy it out and overthrow it?”
3 And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?
3 the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun their lord, “Just because David has sent men with condolences for you, do you really believe he’s showing respect for your father? Instead, hasn’t David sent his emissaries in order to scout out the city, spy on it, and demolish it?”(B)
3 But when David's delegation arrived in Ammonite territory, the Ammonite officials asked their lord Hanun, "Do you think that because David has sent a delegation of consolers to you that he is honoring your father? His delegation has arrived intending to search, scout the land, and then overthrow it, hasn't it?"
4 And Hanun will take David's servants, and shave half their beard, and cut off their garments in the half, even to their buttocks, and he will send them away.
4 So Hanun took David’s servants and (E)shaved off half of their beards, and (F)cut off their garments in the middle as far as their hips, and sent them away.
4 Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
4 So Hanun took David’s emissaries, shaved off half their beards, cut their clothes in half at the hips, and sent them away.(C)
4 So Hanun arrested David's delegation, shaved off half of their beards, cut off their clothes at the waist line, and sent them away in disgrace.
5 And they will announce to David, and he will send to meet them, for the men were greatly shamed. And the king will say, Sit down in Jericho till your beards spring up, and turn back
5 When they told it to David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly humiliated. And the king said, “(c)Stay at Jericho until your beards grow, and then return.”
5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
5 When this was reported to David, he sent someone to meet them, since they were deeply humiliated. The king said, “Stay in Jericho until your beards grow back; then return.”
5 When David had been informed about the incident, he sent word to them, since the men had been deeply humiliated. The king told them, "Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return."
6 And the sons of Ammon will see that they became loathsome before David, and the sons of Ammon will send and hire Aram of the house of Rehob, and Aram of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and king Maacah a thousand men, and Ish-Tob two thousand men.
6 Now when the sons of Ammon saw that (G)they had become odious to David, the sons of Ammon sent and (H)hired the Arameans of (I)Beth-rehob and the (J)Arameans of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of (K)Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of Tob with 12,000 men.
6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.
6 When the Ammonites realized they had become repulsive to David, they hired 20,000 foot soldiers from the Arameans of Beth-rehob and Zobah, 1,000 men from the king of Maacah, and 12,000 men from Tob.
6 When the Ammonites realized that they had created quite a stink with David, they hired 20,000 Aramean mercenaries from Beth-rehob and Zobah, along with the king of Maacah and 1,000 men, and 12,000 men from Tob.
7 And David will bear, and he will send Joab and all the army of the strong.
7 When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army, the mighty men.
7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
7 David heard about it and sent Joab and all the fighting men.
7 In response, David sent out Joab and his entire army of elite soldiers.
8 And the sons of Ammon will go forth and they will arrange the battle at the opening of the gate: and Aram of Zobah and Rehob and Ish-Tob, and Maacah by themselves in the field.
8 The sons of Ammon came out and drew up in battle array (L)at the entrance of the (d)city, while the Arameans of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of (M)Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the field.
8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
8 The Ammonites marched out and lined up in battle formation at the entrance to the city gate while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were in the field by themselves.
8 The Ammonites went out in battle formation at the entrance to the city gate, while the Arameans from Zobah and Rehob, along with the army from Tob and Maacah, were out by themselves in the open fields.
9 And Joab will see that the face of the battle was against him from before and from behind, and he will choose from all the chosen in Israel and will arrange for the meeting of Aram:
9 Now when Joab saw that (e)the battle was set against him in front and in the rear, he selected from all the choice men of Israel, and arrayed them against the Arameans.
9 When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:
9 When Joab saw that there was a battle line in front of him and another behind him, he chose some men out of all the elite troops of Israel and lined up in battle formation to engage the Arameans.
9 When Joab observed that the battle lines were set up to oppose him both in front and behind, he appointed the best troops in Israel and arrayed them to oppose the Arameans,
10 And the remainder of the people he gave into the hand of Abishai his brother, and he will arrange to meet the sons of Ammon.
10 But the remainder of the people he placed in the hand of Abishai his brother, and he arrayed them against the sons of Ammon.
10 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.
10 He placed the rest of the forces under the command of his brother Abishai who lined up in battle formation to engage the Ammonites.

11 And he will say, If Aram shall be strong above me, and be thou to me for deliverance: and if the sons of Ammon shall be strong above thee, and I came for deliverance to thee.
11 He said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the sons of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come to help you.
11 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
11 “If the Arameans are too strong for me,” Joab said, “then you will be my help. However, if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I’ll come to help you.
11 He said, "If the Arameans prove too strong for me, then you are to help me. If the Ammonites prove too strong for you, then I will come help you.
12 Be strong, and we will be strong for our people, and for the cities of our God: and Jehovah shall do the good in his eyes.
12 (N)Be strong, and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God; and (O)may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”
12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.
12 Be strong! We must prove ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God.(D) May the Lord’s will be done.”(a)
12 Be strong, be courageous on behalf of our people and for the cities of our God, and may the LORD do what he thinks is best."
13 And Joab will draw near, and the people which were with him, to battle against Aram: and they will flee from his face.
13 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to the battle against the Arameans, and (P)they fled before him.
13 And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
13 Joab and his troops advanced to fight against the Arameans, and they fled before him.
13 So Joab and the soldiers who were with him attacked the Arameans in battle formation, and the Arameans retreated in front of him.
14 And the sons of Ammon saw that Aram fled and they will flee from the face of Abishai, and come into the city. And Joab will turn back from the sons of Ammon and come to Jerusalem.
14 When the sons of Ammon saw that the Arameans fled, they also fled before Abishai and entered the city. (Q)Then Joab returned from fighting against the sons of Ammon and came to Jerusalem.
14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
14 When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they too fled before Abishai and entered the city. So Joab withdrew from the attack against the Ammonites and went to Jerusalem.
14 When the Ammonites saw the Arameans retreating, they also retreated from Abishai back to the city. Then Joab broke off his attack against the Ammonites and went back to Jerusalem.
15 And Aram will see that he was smitten before Israel, and they will be gathered together.
15 When the Arameans saw that they had been (f)defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together.
15 And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.
15 When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they regrouped.
15 After the Arameans realized that they had been defeated by Israel, they regrouped.
16 And Hadadezer will send and will bring forth Aram that was beyond the river: and they will come to Helam and Shobach, chief of the army of Hadadezer, before them.
16 (R)And Hadadezer sent and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the (g)River, and they came to Helam; and (S)Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer (h)led them.
16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
16 Hadadezer sent messengers to bring the Arameans who were across the Euphrates River, and they came to Helam with Shobach, commander of Hadadezer’s army, leading them.
16 Hadadezer sent for the Arameans who lived beyond the Euphrates River, and they set out for Helam, with Shobach leading them as commander of Hadadezer's army.
17 And it will be announced to David, and he will gather together all Israel, and he will pass over Jordan and will come to Helam. And Aram will arrange to meet David, and they will war with him.
17 Now when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Arameans arrayed themselves to meet David and fought against him.
17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.
17 When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and went to Helam. Then the Arameans lined up in formation to engage David in battle and fought against him.
17 When David learned this, he mustered all of Israel, crossed the Jordan River, and approached Helam. The Arameans assembled in battle array to attack David, and started their assault.
18 And Aram will flee from the face of Israel; and David will kill from Aram seven hundred chariots and forty thousand horsemen, and Shobach chief of his army he struck, and he will die there.
18 But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed (T)700 charioteers of the Arameans and 40,000 horsemen and struck down Shobach the commander of their army, and he died there.
18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
18 But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed 700 of their charioteers and 40,000 foot soldiers.(b) He also struck down Shobach commander of their army, who died there.
18 But the Arameans retreated from Israel, and David's forces killed 700 of their charioteers, 40,000 soldiers, and mortally wounded Shobach, the commander of their army. As a result, Shobach died there.
19 And all the kings, servants of Hadadezer, will see that they were smitten before Israel, and they will be at peace with Israel, and serve them. And Aram will be afraid yet to save the sons of Ammon.
19 When all the kings, servants of Hadadezer, saw that they were (i)defeated by Israel, (U)they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Arameans feared to help the sons of Ammon anymore.
19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
19 When all the kings who were Hadadezer’s subjects saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became their subjects. After this, the Arameans were afraid to ever help the Ammonites again.
19 When all the kings who were allied with Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sought terms of peace with the Israelis and became subservient to them. Furthermore, the Arameans were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.
