1 So the Lord sent Nathan to David. When he came to David, Nathan said, "There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor.
1 Then the Lord sent (A)Nathan to David. And (B)he came to him and (a)said,“There were two men in one city, the one rich and the other poor.
1 And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.
1 So the Lord sent Nathan to David.(A) When he arrived, he said to him:There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor.
1 Nathan approached David and said, "There are two men in the city. One is rich and one is poor. The rich man has many flocks and herds,
2 The rich man had a great many flocks and herds.
2 “The rich man had a great many flocks and herds.
2 The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds:
2 The rich man had a large number of sheep and cattle,
2 but the poor man had nothing except for one little ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It used to share his food and drink from his own cup. It even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.
3 But the poor man had nothing except for a little lamb he had acquired. He raised it, and it grew up alongside him and his children. It used to eat his food, drink from his cup, and sleep in his arms. It was just like a daughter to him.
3 “But the poor man had nothing except (C)one little ewe lambWhich he bought and nourished;And it grew up together with him and his children.It would eat of his (b)bread and drink of his cup and lie in his bosom,And was like a daughter to him.
3 But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.
3 but the poor man had nothing except one small ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up, living with him and his children. It shared his meager food and drank from his cup; it slept in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him.
3 A traveler arrived to visit the rich man. Because he was unwilling to take an animal from one of his own flocks or herds to prepare for the guest who had come to visit him, he took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to visit him."
4 "When a traveler arrived at the rich man's home, he did not want to use one of his own sheep or cattle to feed the traveler who had come to visit him. Instead, he took the poor man's lamb and cooked it for the man who had come to visit him."
4 “Now a traveler came to the rich man,And he (c)was unwilling to take from his own flock or his own herd,To prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him;Rather he took the poor man’s ewe lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”
4 And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.
4 Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man could not bring himself to take one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for his guest.(a)
4 David flew into a rage at the man and told Nathan, "As the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die!
5 Then David became very angry at this man. He said to Nathan, "As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this deserves to die!
5 Then David’s anger burned greatly against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, surely the man who has done this (d)(D)deserves to die.
5 And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:
5 David was infuriated with the man and said to Nathan: “As the Lord lives, the man who did this deserves to die!
5 He will restore the lamb four times its value, because he did this thing, and because he did it without compassion."
6 Because he committed this cold-hearted crime, he must pay for the lamb four times over!"
6 He must make restitution for the lamb (E)fourfold, because he did this thing and had no compassion.”
6 And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.
6 But Nathan replied to David, "You are the man! This is what the LORD God of Israel says: ""I anointed you king and you became king over Israel. ""I delivered you from Saul's control.
7 Nathan said to David, "You are that man! This is what the Lord God of Israel says: 'I chose you to be king over Israel and I rescued you from the hand of Saul.
7 Nathan then said to David, “(F)You are the man! Thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘(G)It is I who anointed you king over Israel and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul.
7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
7 Nathan replied to David, “You are the man! This is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel,(C) and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.
7 ""I gave you your former master's household. ""I placed your former master's wives right in your arms. ""I gave you Israel and Judah. ""And if this had been too little, I would have added much more than that to you!
8 I gave you your master's house, and put your master's wives into your arms. I also gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all that somehow seems insignificant, I would have given you so much more as well!
8 I also gave you (H)your master’s house and your master’s wives into your (e)care, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added to you many more things like these!
8 And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.
8 I gave your master’s house to you and your master’s wives into your arms,(b) and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah, and if that was not enough, I would have given you even more.
8 ""Why did you despise what the LORD has promised by doing what is detestable in his sight? ""You struck down Uriah the Hittite with a battle sword. ""You took his wife to be your own. ""You killed him with the sword of the Ammonite army.
9 Why have you shown contempt for the word of the Lord by doing evil in my sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and you have taken his wife as your own! You have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.
9 Why (I)have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in His sight? (J)You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, (K)have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.
9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.
9 Why then have you despised the command of the Lord by doing what I consider(c) evil?(D) You struck down Uriah(E) the Hittite with the sword and took his wife as your own wife—you murdered him with the Ammonite’s sword.(F)
9 ""Therefore the sword will never leave your household, because you have despised me by taking the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.'
10 So now the sword will never depart from your house. For you have despised me by taking the wife of Uriah the Hittite as your own!'
10 Now therefore, (L)the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’
10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.
10 Now therefore, the sword will never leave your house(G) because you despised Me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own wife.’
10 "This is what the LORD says: ""Listen very carefully! ""I'm raising up evil against you right out of your own household. ""I'm going to take your wives away from you right before your eyes. ""Then I'll give them to your neighbor. ""And then he's going to have sex with your wives in broad daylight!
11 This is what the Lord says: 'I am about to bring disaster on you from inside your own household! Right before your eyes I will take your wives and hand them over to your companion. He will have sexual relations with your wives in broad daylight!
11 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; (M)I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in (f)broad daylight.
11 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
11 “This is what the Lord says,(H) ‘I am going to bring disaster on you from your own family: I will take your wives and give them to another(d) before your very eyes, and he will sleep with them publicly.(e)
11 ""What you did in secret I'm going to do right in front of all Israel and in broad daylight as well!'"
12 Although you have acted in secret, I will do this thing before all Israel, and in broad daylight.'"
12 Indeed (N)you did it secretly, but (O)I will do this thing before all Israel, and (g)under the sun.’”
12 For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.
12 At this point, David told Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD."
13 Then David exclaimed to Nathan, "I have sinned against the Lord!" Nathan replied to David, "Yes, and the Lord has forgiven your sin. You are not going to die.
13 Then David said to Nathan, “(P)I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has (h)(Q)taken away your sin; you shall not die.
13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
13 David responded to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”(I)Then Nathan replied to David, “The Lord has taken away your sin; you will not die.(J)
13 Nathan responded to David, "There's one other thing: the LORD has forgiven your sin. You won't die. Nevertheless, because you have despised the LORD's enemies with utter contempt, the son born to you will most certainly die."
14 Nonetheless, because you have treated the Lord with such contempt in this matter, the son who has been born to you will certainly die."
14 However, because by this deed you have (R)given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.”
14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.
14 However, because you treated(g) the Lord with such contempt in this matter, the son born to you will die.”(K)
14 Then Nathan went home.
15 Then Nathan went to his home. The Lord struck the child that Uriah's wife had borne to David, and the child became very ill.
15 So Nathan went to his house.Then the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s (i)widow bore to David, so that he was very sick.
15 And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.
15 Then Nathan went home.The Lord struck the baby that Uriah’s(L) wife had borne to David, and he became ill.
15 After this, the LORD afflicted the child that Uriah's wife had born to David, and the child became very ill. David begged God on behalf of the youngster. He fasted, went inside, and spent the night lying on the ground.
16 Then David prayed to God for the child and fasted. He would even go and spend the night lying on the ground.
16 David therefore inquired of God for the child; and David (S)fasted and went and (T)lay all night on the ground.
16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.
16 David pleaded with God for the boy. He fasted, went home, and spent the night lying on the ground.(M)
16 His closest advisors at the palace got up, remained with him, and tried to help him get up from the ground, but he would not do so. He also wouldn't eat with them.
17 The elders of his house stood over him and tried to lift him from the ground, but he was unwilling, and refused to eat food with them.
17 (U)The elders of his household stood beside him in order to raise him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat food with them.
17 And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.
17 The elders of his house stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat anything with them.
17 A week later, the child died, and David's staff was afraid to tell him that the child had died. They were telling themselves, "Look, when the child was still alive, we talked to him but he wouldn't listen to what we said. Now what kind of trouble will he bring on himself if we tell him that the child has died?"
18 On the seventh day the child died. But the servants of David were afraid to inform him that the child had died, for they said, "While the child was still alive he would not listen to us when we spoke to him. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He will do himself harm!"
18 Then it happened on the seventh day that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was still alive, we spoke to him and he did not listen to our voice. How then can we tell him that the child is dead, since he might do himself harm!”
18 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?
18 On the seventh day the baby died. But David’s servants were afraid to tell him the baby was dead. They said, “Look, while the baby was alive, we spoke to him, and he wouldn’t listen to us. So how can we tell him the baby is dead? He may do something desperate.”
18 But as David observed his staff whispering together, he perceived that the child had died, so he asked his staff, "Is the child dead?" They replied, "He has died."
19 When David saw that his servants were whispering to one another, he realized that the child was dead. So David asked his servants, "Is the child dead?" They replied, "Yes, he's dead."
19 But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; so David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” And they said, “He is dead.”
19 But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.
19 When David saw that his servants were whispering to each other, he guessed that the baby was dead. So he asked his servants, “Is the baby dead?”“He is dead,” they replied.
19 At this, David got up from the ground, washed, anointed himself, changed his clothes, and went into the LORD's tent to worship. Then he went back to his palace where, at his request, they served him food and he ate.
20 So David got up from the ground, bathed, put on oil, and changed his clothes. He went to the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then, when he entered his palace, he requested that food be brought to him, and he ate.
20 So David arose from the ground, (V)washed, anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he came into the house of the Lord and (W)worshiped. Then he came to his own house, and when he requested, they set food before him and he ate.
20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.
20 Then David got up from the ground. He washed, anointed himself, changed his clothes, went to the Lord’s house, and worshiped. Then he went home and requested something to eat. So they served him food, and he ate.
20 His staff asked him, "What's this about? When the child was alive, you fasted and cried. Now that the child has died, you get up and eat!"
21 His servants said to him, "What is this that you have done? While the child was still alive, you fasted and wept. Once the child was dead you got up and ate food!"
21 Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? (j)While the child was alive, you fasted and wept; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.”
21 Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.
21 His servants asked him, “What did you just do? While the baby was alive, you fasted and wept, but when he died, you got up and ate food.”
21 He answered, "When the child was alive, I fasted and cried. I asked myself, "Who knows? Maybe the LORD will show grace to me and the child will live.'
22 He replied, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept because I thought, 'Perhaps the Lord will show pity and the child will live.
22 He said, “While the child was still alive, (X)I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘(Y)Who knows, the Lord may be gracious to me, that the child may live.’
22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?
22 He answered, “While the baby was alive, I fasted and wept because I thought, ‘Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let him live.’
22 But now that he has died, what's the point of fasting? Can I bring him back again? I'll be going to be with him, but he won't be returning to me."
23 But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Am I able to bring him back? I will go to him, but he cannot return to me!'"
23 But now he has died; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? (Z)I will go to him, but (AA)he will not return to me.”
23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.
23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I’ll go to him, but he will never return to me.”(N)
23 Then David consoled his wife Bathsheba. He went in and had sex with her, and she bore a son whom he named Solomon. The LORD loved him,
24 So David comforted his wife Bathsheba. He went to her and had marital relations with her. She gave birth to a son, and David named him Solomon. Now the Lord loved the child
24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and went in to her and lay with her; and she gave birth to a son, and (k)(AB)he named him Solomon. Now the Lord loved him
24 And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him.
24 Then David comforted(O) his wife Bathsheba; he went and slept with her. She gave birth to a son and named(h) him Solomon.(i)(P) The Lord loved him,
24 and sent a message written by Nathan the prophet to call his name Jedidiah, for the Lord's sake.
25 and sent word through Nathan the prophet that he should be named Jedidiah for the Lord's sake.
25 And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.
25 and He sent a message through Nathan the prophet, who named(j) him Jedidiah,(k) because of the Lord.
25 Meanwhile, Joab attacked the Ammonite city of Rabbah and captured its stronghold.
27 Joab then sent messengers to David, saying, "I have fought against Rabbah and have captured the water supply of the city.
27 Joab sent messengers to David and said, “I have fought against Rabbah, I have even captured the city of waters.
27 And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah, and have taken the city of waters.
27 Then Joab sent messengers to David to say, “I have fought against Rabbah and have also captured the water supply.
27 so call out the rest of the army, attack the city, and capture it. Otherwise, I'll take the city myself and name it after me."
28 So now assemble the rest of the army and besiege the city and capture it. Otherwise I will capture the city and it will be named for me."
28 Now therefore, gather the rest of the people together and camp against the city and capture it, or I will capture the city myself and it will be named after me.”
28 Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.
28 Now therefore, assemble the rest of the troops, lay siege to the city, and capture it. Otherwise I will be the one to capture the city, and it will be named after me.”
28 So David mustered his entire army and marched on Rabbah, attacked it, and captured it.
29 So David assembled all the army and went to Rabbah and fought against it and captured it.

29 He confiscated the crown of their king from his head it weighed one talent in gold and was set with precious stones and it was placed on David's head. He confiscated a great amount of war booty that had been plundered from the city,
30 He took the crown of their king from his head -- it was gold, weighed about seventy-five pounds, and held a precious stone -- and it was placed on David's head. He also took from the city a great deal of plunder.
30 Then (AE)he took the crown of (m)their king from his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and in it (n)was a precious stone; and it was placed on David’s head. And he brought out the spoil of the city in great amounts.
30 And he took their king's crown from off his head, the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance.
30 He took the crown from the head of their king,(l) and it was placed on David’s head. The crown weighed 75 pounds(m) of gold, and it had a precious stone in it. In addition, David took away a large quantity of plunder from the city.
30 brought back the people who had lived in it, placing them under conscripted labor with saws, iron picks, and axes. He did this to every Ammonite city, and then David and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.
31 He removed the people who were in it and made them do hard labor with saws, iron picks, and iron axes, putting them to work at the brick kiln. This was his policy with all the Ammonite cities. Then David and all the army returned to Jerusalem.
31 He also brought out the people who were in it, and (AF)set them under saws, sharp iron instruments, and iron axes, and made them pass through the brickkiln. And thus he did to all the cities of the sons of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
31 And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
