And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.
the Jews, becoming jealous and taking along some wicked men from the market place, formed a mob and set the city in an uproar; and attacking the house of Jason, they were seeking to bring them out to the people.
But while Gallio was
proconsul of Achaia, the Jews with one accord rose up against Paul and brought him before the judgment seat,
When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began crying out, saying, “Great is
Artemis of the Ephesians!”
Then all the city was provoked, and
the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut.
They listened to him up to this statement, and then they raised their voices and said, “
Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he should not be allowed to live!”
But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us in public without trial,
men who are Romans, and have thrown us into prison; and now are they sending us away secretly? No indeed! But let them come themselves and bring us out.”
took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them.
commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, stating that he should be examined by scourging so that he might find out the reason why they were shouting against him that way.
But beware of men, for they will hand you over to the courts and scourge you in their synagogues;
Then he released Barabbas
for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
