are proclaiming customs which it is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans.”
while Paul said in his own defense, “
I have committed no offense either against the Law of the Jews or against the temple or against Caesar.”
let it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us at Jerusalem; they are rebuilding
the rebellious and evil city and are finishing the walls and repairing the foundations.
There are certain Jews whom you have
appointed over the administration of the province of Babylon, namely Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego. These men, O king, have disregarded you; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.”
Then they answered and spoke before the king, “
Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, O king, or to the injunction which you signed, but keeps making his petition three times a day.”
And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”
As a result of this Pilate
made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, “ If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.”
