Paul Finds Disciples Of John The Baptist In Ephesus

1 Whilst Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having pass'd through the upper provinces of Asia, arrived at Ephesus, where finding some disciples, he said to them,

1 It happened that while (A)Apollos was at (B)Corinth, Paul passed through the (C)upper country and came to (D)Ephesus, and found some disciples.

1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

4 upon which Paul said, John indeed administer'd the baptism of repentance, but with this admonition, that they should believe in him, who was to come after, that is, in Jesus the Messias.

4 Paul said, “(H)John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people (I)to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

5 when they heard this, they were initiated by baptism into the christian profession.

8 At length Paul went to the synagogue, where he spoke with great freedom, and for three months he conferr'd with them to persuade them of the truth of the evangelical kingdom.

9 But when some people became stubborn, refused to believe, and slandered the Way in front of the people, Paul left them, taking his disciples away with him, and held daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.

10 this he continued for two years; so that the Jews and proselytes of that part of Asia heard the doctrine of the Lord Jesus.

Would-Be Exorcists

11 the miracles which God wrought by the ministry of Paul being of such an extraordinary nature, that by applying the handkerchiefs,

13 But also some of the Jewish (Y)exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to name over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”

13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists attempted to pronounce the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I command you by the Jesus that Paul preaches!”(J)

13 Then some Jews who went around trying to drive out demons attempted to use the name of the Lord Jesus on those who had evil spirits, saying, "I command you by that Jesus whom Paul preaches!"

14 these practitioners were seven in number, the sons of Sceva a Jew, one of the chief priests.

16 the man who was possess'd immediately leapt upon them, got the better, and used them so roughly, they were forc'd to fly out of the house, cover'd with nothing but their wounds.

16 And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

18 many that believed came to confess, and give an account of their past actions.

A Major Riot In Ephesus

21 after this, Paul had a design to pass thro' Macedonia and Achaia in his way to Jerusalem: purposing when he had been there to make a visit to Rome.

21 Now after these things were finished, Paul purposed in the (h)Spirit to (AD)go to Jerusalem (AE)after he had passed through (AF)Macedonia and (AG)Achaia, saying, “After I have been there, (AH)I must also see Rome.”

21 After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

21 When these events were over, Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem. “After I’ve been there,” he said, “I must see Rome as well!”(M)

21 After these things had happened, Paul decided to go through Macedonia and Achaia and then to go on to Jerusalem. "After I have gone there," he told them, "I must also see Rome."

22 he sent therefore Timothy and Erastus, two of his assistants in the ministry, before to Macedonia; but stay'd himself in Asia for some time.

22 And having sent into (AI)Macedonia two of (AJ)those who ministered to him, (AK)Timothy and (AL)Erastus, he himself stayed in (i)(AM)Asia for a while.

22 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

A Riot In Ephesus

23 It was then a tumult happen'd at Ephesus upon account of the christian sect.

23 Now about that time a great commotion broke out concerning the Way.

24 for one Demetrius, a silver-smith, who made little models of Diana's temple, and so furnish'd a deal of employment to the workmen in that trade,

24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of (j)Artemis, (AO)was bringing no little (k)business to the craftsmen;

24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;

24 For a person named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis,(c) provided a great deal of(d) business for the craftsmen.

24 By making silver shrines of Artemis, a silversmith named Demetrius provided a large income for skilled workers.

25 summon'd the company, and thus address'd them, "tho' you know, sirs, it is by this craft that we are in such plight,

25 these he gathered together with the workmen of similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that our prosperity (l)depends upon this business.

25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.

25 When he had assembled them, as well as the workers engaged in this type of business, he said: “Men, you know that our prosperity is derived from this business.

25 He called a meeting of these men and others who were engaged in similar trades and said, "Men, you well know that we get a good income from this business.

26 yet your own eyes and ears have inform'd you, that not only at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul by his persuasions has turn'd the heads of a world of people, asserting, that these are Gods of our own making, and not really such.

26 You see and hear that not only in (AP)Ephesus, but in almost all of (m)(AQ)Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that (n)(AR)gods made with hands are no gods at all.

26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

26 You both see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this man Paul has persuaded and misled a considerable number of people by saying that gods made by hand are not gods!(P)

26 You also see and hear that, not only in Ephesus, but almost all over Asia, this man Paul has won over and taken away a large crowd by telling them that gods made by human hands are not gods at all.

27 so that not only our profession runs the risk of being vilified; but the temple of the great goddess Diana will be depreciated, and her majesty, so rever'd thro' all Asia, and the whole world, will be discarded."

27 Not only is there danger that this trade of ours fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess (o)Artemis be regarded as worthless and that she whom all of (p)(AS)Asia and (AT)the (q)world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence.”

27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

27 So not only do we run a risk that our business may be discredited, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be despised and her magnificence come to the verge of ruin—the very one all of Asia and the world adore.”

27 There is a danger not only that our business will lose its reputation but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be brought into disrepute and that she will be robbed of her majesty that brought all Asia and the world to worship her."

28 at these words, they were fir'd with indignation, and cry'd out, "great is Diana of the Ephesians."

28 When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began crying out, saying, “Great is (r)Artemis of the (AU)Ephesians!”

28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

30 upon this Paul was bent upon going. to the populace,

32 there the mob were in the utmost riot, some bawling out in one cry, some in another, and the greatest part at a loss to know why they were met.

32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

33 Some of the crowd concluded it was because of Alexander, since the Jews had pushed him to the front. So Alexander motioned for silence and tried to make a defense before the people.

34 but when they knew he was a Jew, they cry'd out one and all for the space of two hours, "great is Diana of the Ephesians."

34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single outcry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, “Great is (aa)Artemis of the Ephesians!”

34 But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a united cry went up from all of them for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

34 But when they found out that he was a Jew, they all started to shout in unison for about two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"

35 at length the town-clerk appeased the people, and thus began, "who is there, O Ephesians, that does not know, that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Diana, and of her statue, which fell from heaven:

35 After quieting the crowd, the town clerk *said, “Men of (BC)Ephesus, what man is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great (ab)Artemis and of the image which fell down from (ac)heaven?

35 And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

35 However, when the city clerk had calmed the crowd down, he said, “Men of Ephesus! What man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is the temple guardian of the great(f) Artemis, and of the image that fell from heaven?

35 When the city recorder had quieted the crowd, he said, "Men of Ephesus, who in the world doesn't know that this city of Ephesus is the keeper of the temple of the great Artemis and of the statue that fell down from heaven?

36 since this is incontestible, it behoves you to be easy, and free from any rash conduct:

36 So, since these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash.

36 Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

36 Therefore, since these things are undeniable, you must keep calm and not do anything rash.

37 for the men you have brought here, have neither plunder'd your temples, nor inveigh'd against your goddess.

38 So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against any man, the courts are in session and (ad)(BE)proconsuls are available; let them bring charges against one another.

38 Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.

41 having thus harangued them, he broke up the assembly.
