Peter And John Arrested
1 While they were addressing the people the priests, the commander of the Temple, and the Sadducees came upon them,
1 And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,
1 As they were speaking to the people, the priests and (A)the captain of the temple guard and (B)the Sadducees (C)came up to them,
1 Now as they were speaking to the people, the priests, the commander of the temple police, and the Sadducees confronted them,(A)
1 While they were speaking to the people, the priests, the commander of the Temple guards, and the Sadducees came to them.
2 incensed at their teaching the people, and proclaiming, in the case of Jesus, the resurrection from the dead.
2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
2 being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming (a)(D)in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
2 because they were provoked that they were teaching the people and proclaiming the resurrection from the dead, using Jesus as the example.(a)(B)
2 They were greatly disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people and announcing that Jesus had been resurrected from the dead.
3 They arrested them, and put them in prison till the next day, for it was already evening.
3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide.
3 And they laid hands on them and (E)put them in jail until the next day, for it was already evening.
3 So they seized them and put them in custody until the next day, since it was already evening.
3 So they arrested them and placed them in custody until the next day, since it was already evening.
4 But many of those who had heard the message believed, and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
4 Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.
4 But many of those who had heard the (b)message believed; and (F)the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
4 But many of those who heard the message believed, and the number of the men came to about 5,000.
4 But many of those who heard their message believed, and the men grew to number about 5,000.
Peter And John On Trial Before The Sanhedrin
5 There was held in Jerusalem, next morning, a meeting of their rulers, the elders and scribes,
5 And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes,
5 The next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem
5 The next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes met in Jerusalem
6 and Annas, the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all the members of the high priests family were present.
6 And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.
6 and (H)Annas the high priest was there, and (I)Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent.
6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John and Alexander, and all the members of the high-priestly family.(b)(C)
6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and the rest of the high priest's family.
7 Then they made the men stand before them and demanded, "By what power, or in what name, have you fellows done this?"
7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?
7 When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, “By what power, or in what name, have you done this?”
7 After they had Peter and John stand before them, they asked the question: “By what power or in what name have you done this?”
7 They made Peter and John stand in front of them and began asking, "By what power or by what name did you do this?"
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, answered them.
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,
8 Then Peter, (c)(J)filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “(d)(K)Rulers and elders of the people,
8 Then Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders:(c)(D)
8 Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, told them, "Rulers and elders of the people!
9 "Rulers and elders of the people, if we are being examined today concerning a benefit conferred upon a cripple, as to how has this man been cured,
9 If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;
9 if we are (e)on trial today for (L)a benefit done to a sick man, (f)as to how this man has been made well,
9 If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a disabled man—by what means he was healed—
9 If we are being questioned today for a good deed done for someone who was sick or to learn how this man was healed,
10 "be it known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ, the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, in him does this man stand before you strong and well.
10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that (g)(M)by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom (N)God raised from the dead—(h)by (i)this name this man stands here before you in good health.
10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead—by Him this man is standing here before you healthy.(E)
10 you and all the people of Israel must understand that this man stands healthy before you because of the name of Jesus from Nazareth, whom you crucified, but whom God raised from the dead.
11 "For he is the Stone, cast aside by you builders, which has become the head stone of the corner.
11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
11 (j)(O)He is the (P)stone which was (Q)rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone.
11 He is "the stone that was rejected by you builders, which has become the cornerstone.'
12 "There is no salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men, in which we must be saved."
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
12 And there is salvation in (R)no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people, and we must be saved by it.”(G)
12 There is no salvation by anyone else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved."
The Name Forbidden
13 Now when they beheld the glad fearlessness of Peter and John and had perceived that they were amazed; and they began to recognize them, that they were companions of Jesus.
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
13 Now as they observed the (S)confidence of (T)Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and (U)began to recognize them (k)as having been with Jesus.
13 When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and recognized that they had been with Jesus.(H)
13 Now when the Jewish leaders saw the boldness of Peter and John and found out that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and realized that they had been with Jesus.
14 But since they saw the man standing with them who had been healed, they had nothing to answer.
14 And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply.
14 And since they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in response.
14 And seeing the man who was healed standing with them, they could not say anything against them.
15 So they bade them withdraw from the Sanhedrin, while they conferred together.
15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
15 But when they had ordered them to leave the (l)(V)Council, they began to confer with one another,
15 After they had ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin, they conferred among themselves,
15 So they ordered them to leave the Council and began to discuss the matter among themselves.
16 "What," said they, "shall we do with these men? For it is well known throughout Jerusalem that a notable miracle has been performed by them, and we cannot deny it.
16 Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.
16 saying, “(W)What shall we do with these men? For the fact that a (X)noteworthy (m)miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
16 saying, “What should we do with these men? For an obvious sign, evident to all who live in Jerusalem, has been done through them, and we cannot deny it!(I)
16 They said, "What should we do with these men? For it's obvious to everybody living in Jerusalem that an unmistakable sign has been done by them, and we cannot deny it.
17 "But that the matter may spread no further among the people, let us threaten them not to speak to any one hereafter about this name."
17 But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.
17 But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no longer to any man (Y)in this name.”
17 However, so this does not spread any further among the people, let’s threaten them against speaking to anyone in this name again.”
17 But to keep it from spreading any further among the people, let us warn them never again to speak to anyone in this name."
18 So they summoned them, and ordered them not to speak at all, nor to teach in the name of Jesus.
18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
18 And when they had summoned them, they (Z)commanded them not to speak or teach at all (n)in the name of Jesus.
18 So they called for them and ordered them not to preach or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
18 So they called Peter and John back in and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
19 But Peter and John said in reply. "Do you decide whether in the sight of God it is right to obey you rather than God;
19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
19 But (AA)Peter and John answered and said to them, “(AB)Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge;
19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it’s right in the sight of God for us to listen to you rather than to God, you decide;(J)
19 But Peter and John answered them, "You must decide whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than God,
21 So when they had further threatened them they let the apostles go, being quite unable to find any way of punishing them because of the people, for everybody was glorifying God over what had happened.
21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.
21 When they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) (AD)on account of the people, because they were all (AE)glorifying God for what had happened;
21 After threatening them further, they released them. They found no way to punish them, because the people were all giving glory to God over what had been done;(L)
21 So they threatened Peter and John even more and then let them go. They couldn't find any way to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened,
22 For the man on whom this miracle of healing had been wrought was over forty years old.
22 For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed.
22 for this sign of healing had been performed on a man over 40 years old.
22 since the man on whom this sign of healing had been performed was more than 40 years old.
The Believers Pray For Continued Bold Witness
23 As soon as the apostles were released, they went to their friends, and told what the high priests and elders had said.
23 And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
23 When they had been released, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
23 After they were released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
23 After they were released, Peter and John went to their fellow believers and told them everything the high priests and the elders had said.
24 And when they heard it they all lifted up their voices in prayer to God, saying. "O Sovereign Lord, who madest heaven and earth and sea, and all that in them is,
24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
24 And when they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with one accord and said, “O (p)Lord, it is You who (AF)made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them,
24 When they heard this, they all raised their voices to God and said, “Master, You are the One who made the heaven, the earth, and the sea, and everything in them.(M)
24 When they heard this, they all raised their voices to God and said, "Master, you made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them.
25 "who saidest through the Holy Spirit, by the lips of thy servant David, our forefather. "Why did the Gentiles rage, And the peoples form futile plans?
25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
25 who (AG)by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Your servant, said,‘(AH)Why did the (q)Gentiles rage,And the peoples devise futile things?
25 You said through the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David Your servant:(f)Why did the Gentiles rageand the peoples plot futile things?
25 You said by the Holy Spirit through the voice of our ancestor, your servant David, "Why do the unbelievers rage, and the people devise useless plots?
26 "The kings of the earth set themselves in array, And the rulers were gathered together Against the Lord and against his Christ.
26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
26 ‘(AI)The kings of the earth (r)took their stand,And the rulers were gathered togetherAgainst the Lord and against His (s)(AJ)Christ.’
26 The kings of the earth took their standand the rulers assembled togetheragainst the Lord and against His Messiah.(N)(g)
26 The kings of the earth take their stand, and rulers meet together against the Lord and against his Messiah.'
27 "In this very city they did gather together against thy holy Servant, Jesus whom thou hast anointed??erod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and also the tribes of Israel??28 "to do all that thy power and thy will had predetermined should be done.
27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
27 For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy (t)(AK)servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both (AL)Herod and (AM)Pontius Pilate, along with (AN)the (u)Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,
27 “For, in fact, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people(h) of Israel, assembled together against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed,(O)
27 For in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate actually met together with unbelievers and the people of Israel to oppose your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed,
28 "And now Lord, listen to their threats, and grant to thy slaves to proclaim thy message with all boldness,
28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
28 to do whatever Your hand and Your plan had predestined to take place.
28 to carry out everything that your hand and will had predetermined to take place.
29 "whilst thou stretchest forth thy hand to heal; grant too, that signs and wonders may be done through the name of thy holy Servant, Jesus."
29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
29 And (v)now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Your bond-servants may (AP)speak Your word with all (AQ)confidence,
29 And now, Lord, consider their threats, and grant that Your slaves may speak Your message with complete boldness,(P)
29 Lord, pay attention to their threats now, and allow your servants to speak your word boldly
30 When they had prayed, the place where they were gathered was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak the message of the Lord with boldness.
30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
30 while You extend Your hand to heal, and (w)(AR)signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy (x)(AS)servant Jesus.”
30 while You stretch out Your hand for healing, signs, and wonders(Q) to be performed through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”
30 as you stretch out your hand to heal and to perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."
The Believers Share All Things In Common
31 Now the multitude of the believers was of one heart and one soul, nor did any one of them say that any of his possessions was his own; but they had all things common.
31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
31 And when they had prayed, the (AT)place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all (AU)filled with the Holy Spirit and began to (AV)speak the word of God with (AW)boldness.
31 When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak God’s message with boldness.(R)
31 When they had prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken, and all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak messages from God boldly.
32 And the apostles continued with great power to give their witness concerning the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
32 And the (y)congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them (z)claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but (AX)all things were common property to them.
32 Now the large group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but instead they held everything in common.(S)
32 Now all the believers were one in heart and soul, and nobody called any of his possessions his own. Instead, they shared everything they owned.
33 Nor was there any one of them in want, for all who owned houses or lands would sell them and bring the price of the things that were sold, and lay it at the apostles' feet;
33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
33 And (AY)with great power the apostles were giving (AZ)testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.
33 And the apostles were giving testimony with great power to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on all of them.(T)
33 With great power, the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was on them all,
34 and distribution would be made to each according to his need.
34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
34 For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses (BA)would sell them and bring the (aa)proceeds of the sales
34 For there was not a needy person among them, because all those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds of the things that were sold,(U)
34 since none of them needed anything, because everyone who had land or houses would sell them and bring the money received for the things sold
35 In this way Joseph, whom the apostles called Barnabas ("Son of Encouragement" is what it means), who was a native Cyprus,
35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
35 and (BB)lay them at the apostles’ feet, and they would be (BC)distributed to each as any had need.
35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet. This was then distributed for each person’s basic needs.(i)(V)
35 and lay it at the apostles' feet. Then it was distributed to anyone who needed it.
36 sold a farm which he had, and brought the price, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
36 Now Joseph, a Levite of (BD)Cyprian birth, who was also called (BE)Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means Son of (ab)(BF)Encouragement),
36 Joseph, a Levite and a Cypriot by birth, the one the apostles called Barnabas, which is translated Son of Encouragement,(W)
36 One man, Joseph, a descendant of Levi and a native of Cyprus, who was named Barnabas by the apostles (the name means "a son of encouragement"),
