Children And Parents

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is the right thing to do.

1 (A)Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

1 Children, obey(A) your parents as you would the Lord,(a) because this is right.

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord [that is, accept their guidance and discipline as His representatives], for this is right [for obedience teaches wisdom and self-discipline].

2 "Honor your father and mother"" (This is a very important commandment with a promise.)

2 (B)Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise),

2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

2 Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment(b) with a promise,

2 Honor [esteem, value as precious] your father and your mother [and be respectful to them]—this is the first commandment with a promise—

3 ""so that it may go well for you, and that you may have a long life on the earth."

3 so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.

3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

3 so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.(c)(B)(d)

3 so that it may be well with you, and that you may have a long life on the earth.(A)

4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up by training and instructing them about the Lord.

4 (C)Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but (D)bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

4 Fathers, don’t stir up anger(C) in your children, but bring them up in the training(D) and instruction of the Lord.

4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to the point of resentment with demands that are trivial or unreasonable or humiliating or abusive; nor by showing favoritism or indifference to any of them], but bring them up [tenderly, with lovingkindness] in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Slaves And Masters

5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear, trembling, and sincerity, as when you obey the Messiah.

5 (E)Slaves, be obedient to those who are your (a)masters according to the flesh, with (F)fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, (G)as to Christ;

5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

5 Slaves, obey your human(e) masters(E) with fear and trembling,(F) in the sincerity(G) of your heart, as to Christ.

5 (a)Slaves, be obedient to those who are your earthly masters, with respect for authority, and with a sincere heart [seeking to please them], as [service] to Christ—

6 Do not do this only while you're being watched in order to please them, but be like slaves of the Messiah, who are determined to obey God's will.

6 (H)not (b)by way of eyeservice, as (I)men-pleasers, but as (J)slaves of Christ, (K)doing the will of God from the (c)heart.

6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

6 Don’t work only while being watched, in order to please men, but as slaves of Christ, do God’s will(H) from your heart.(f)

6 not in the way of eye-service [working only when someone is watching you and only] to please men, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart;

7 Serve willingly, as if you were serving the Lord and not merely people,

7 With good will (d)render service, (L)as to the Lord, and not to men,

7 With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:

7 Serve with a good attitude, as to the Lord and not to men,(I)

7 rendering service with goodwill, as to the Lord, and not [only] to men,

8 because you know that everyone will receive a reward from the Lord for whatever good he has done, whether he is a slave or free.

8 (M)knowing that (N)whatever good thing each one does, this he will receive back from the Lord, (O)whether slave or free.

8 Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.

8 knowing that whatever good each one does, slave or free, he will receive this back from the Lord.

8 knowing that whatever good thing each one does, he will receive this back from the Lord, whether [he is] slave or free.

9 Masters, treat your slaves the same way. Do not threaten them, for you know that both of you have the same Master in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.

9 And masters, do the same things to them, and (P)give up threatening, knowing that (Q)both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is (R)no partiality with Him.

9 And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

9 And masters, treat your slaves the same way, without threatening(J) them, because you know that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism(K) with Him.(L)

9 You masters, do the same [showing goodwill] toward them, and give up threatening and abusive words, knowing that [He who is] both their true Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with Him [regardless of one’s earthly status].

Spiritual Warfare

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord, relying on his mighty strength.

10 Finally, (S)be strong in the Lord and in (T)the strength of His might.

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength.(M)

10 In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [draw your strength from Him and be empowered through your union with Him] and in the power of His [boundless] might.

11 Put on the whole armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the Devil's strategies.

11 (U)Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the (V)schemes of the devil.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

11 Put on(N) the full armor(O) of God so that you can stand against the tactics(g) of the Devil.

11 Put on the full armor of God [for His precepts are like the splendid armor of a heavily-armed soldier], so that you may be able to [successfully] stand up against all the schemes and the strategies and the deceits of the devil.

12 For our struggle is not against human opponents, but against rulers, authorities, cosmic powers in the darkness around us, and evil spiritual forces in the heavenly realm.

12 For our (W)struggle is not against (e)(X)flesh and blood, but (Y)against the rulers, against the powers, against the (Z)world forces of this (AA)darkness, against the (AB)spiritual forces of wickedness in (AC)the heavenly places.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

12 For our battle is not against flesh(P) and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities,(Q) against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil(R) in the heavens.(S)

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places.

13 For this reason, take up the whole armor of God so that you may be able to take a stand whenever evil comes. And when you have done everything you could, you will be able to stand firm.

13 Therefore, take up (AD)the full armor of God, so that you will be able to (AE)resist in (AF)the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

13 This is why you must take up the full armor(T) of God, so that you may be able to resist(U) in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand.

13 Therefore, put on the complete armor of God, so that you will be able to [successfully] resist and stand your ground in the evil day [of danger], and having done everything [that the crisis demands], to stand firm [in your place, fully prepared, immovable, victorious].

14 Stand firm, therefore, having fastened the belt of truth around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

14 Stand firm therefore, (AG)having girded your loins with truth, and having (AH)put on the breastplate of righteousness,

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

14 Stand,(V) therefore,with truth(W) like a belt around your waist,righteousness(X) like armor on your chest,(Y)

14 So stand firm and hold your ground, having (b)tightened the wide band of truth (personal integrity, moral courage) around your waist and having put on the breastplate of righteousness (an upright heart),(B)

15 and being firm-footed in the gospel of peace.

15 and having (AI)shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

15 and your feet sandaled with readinessfor the gospel of peace.(h)

15 and having (c)strapped on your feet the gospel of peace in preparation [to face the enemy with firm-footed stability and the readiness produced by the good news].(C)

16 In addition to having clothed yourselves with these things, having taken up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to put out all the flaming arrows of the evil one,

16 (f)in addition to all, taking up the (AJ)shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the (AK)flaming arrows of (AL)the evil one.

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

16 In every situation take the shield(Z) of faith,(AA)and with it you will be able to extinguishall the flaming arrows of the evil one.(AB)

16 Above all, lift up the [protective] (d)shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17 also take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

17 And take (AM)the helmet of salvation, and the (AN)sword of the Spirit, which is (AO)the word of God.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

17 Take the helmet(AC) of salvation,and the sword(AD) of the Spirit,(AE)which is God’s word.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.(D)

18 Pray in the Spirit at all times with every kind of prayer and request. Likewise, be alert with your most diligent efforts and pray for all the saints.

18 (g)With all (AP)prayer and petition (h)(AQ)pray at all times (AR)in the Spirit, and with this in view, (i)(AS)be on the alert with all (AT)perseverance and (AU)petition for all the saints,

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

18 Pray(AF) at all times in the Spirit(AG) with every prayer and request, and stay alert(AH) in this with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.

18 With all prayer and petition pray [with specific requests] at all times [on every occasion and in every season] in the Spirit, and with this in view, stay alert with all perseverance and petition [interceding in prayer] for all (e)God’s people.

19 Pray also for me, so that, when I begin to speak, the right words will come to me. Then I will boldly make known the secret of the gospel,

19 and (AV)pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me (AW)in the opening of my mouth, to make known with (AX)boldness (AY)the mystery of the gospel,

19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

19 Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness(AI) the mystery of the gospel.

19 And pray for me, that words may be given to me when I open my mouth, to proclaim boldly the mystery of the good news [of salvation],

20 for whose sake I am an ambassador in chains, desiring to declare the gospel as boldly as I should.

20 for which I am an (AZ)ambassador (BA)in (j)chains; that (k)in proclaiming it I may speak (BB)boldly, (BC)as I ought to speak.

20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

20 For this I am an ambassador(AJ) in chains. Pray that I might be bold enough in Him to speak as I should.

20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. And pray that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly and courageously, as I should.
