The People's Reaction

18 The people heard the thunder and the trumpet blast. They saw the lightning and the smoking mountain. They trembled with fear and stood at a distance.

18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

18 (X)All the people perceived the (f)thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance.

18 All the people witnessed(a) the thunder and lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain surrounded by smoke. When the people saw it(b) they trembled and stood at a distance.(Q)

19 They said to Moses: If you speak to us, we will listen. However, we are afraid that if God speaks to us, we will die.

19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

19 (Y)Then they said to Moses, “Speak (g)to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak (h)to us, or we will die.”

19 “You speak to us, and we will listen,” they said to Moses, “but don’t let God speak to us, or we will die.”(R)

19 They told Moses, "You speak to us and we will listen, but don't let God speak with us, or we may die.

20 Moses responded: Do not be afraid. God has only come to test you and to inspire you to obey him, so that you will not sin.

20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

20 Moses said to the people, “(Z)Do not be afraid; for God has come in order (AA)to test you, and in order that (AB)the fear of Him may (i)remain with you, so that you may not sin.”

20 Moses responded to the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will fear Him and will not(c) sin.”(S)

21 But the people continued to stand at a distance. Only Moses went near the dark cloud where God was.

21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

23 (AE)You shall not make other gods besides Me; (AF)gods of silver or gods of gold, you shall not make for yourselves.

23 You must not make gods of silver to rival Me; you must not make gods of gold for yourselves.(d)(V)

24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

24 You shall make (AG)an altar of earth for Me, and you shall sacrifice on it your (AH)burnt offerings and your (AI)peace offerings, (AJ)your sheep and your oxen; in every place (AK)where I cause My name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you.

25 If you make an altar of stone for me, do not build it out of cut stones. This is because when you use a chisel on stones, you make them unfit for my use.

25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

25 If you make an altar of stone for Me, (AL)you shall not build it of cut stones, for if you wield your tool on it, you will profane it.

25 If you make a stone altar for Me, you must not build it out of cut stones. If you use your chisel on it, you will defile it.(X)

25 If you make an altar of stone for me, you must not build it of cut stones, because if you strike it with your chisel, you will profane it.

26 Do not build an altar for me with steps leading up to it. If you do, you will expose yourselves as you go up the steps.

26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

26 And you shall not go up by steps to My altar, so that (AM)your nakedness will not be exposed on it.’

26 You must not go up to My altar on steps, so that your nakedness is not exposed on it.

26 You are not to ascend to my altar on steps, so that your nakedness may not be exposed on it.'"
