Condemnation Of Israel's Idolatrous Elders

1 Some of the elders of Israel came(A) to me and sat down in front of me.(B)

1 Then some (A)elders of Israel came to me and (B)sat down before me.

1 Then came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me.

1 Later, some men from the elders of Israel came to visit me. After they had sat down in my presence,

1 Then certain of the elders of Israel came to me [seeking an oracle from God] and sat down before me.

2 Then the word of the Lord came to me:

2 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

2 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

2 this message came to me from the LORD.

2 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

3 “Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and have put sinful stumbling blocks before their faces.(C) Should I be consulted by them at all?(D)

3 “Son of man, these men have (C)set up their idols in their hearts and have (D)put right before their faces the stumbling block of their iniquity. Should I be (E)consulted by them at all?

3 Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be inquired of at all by them?

3 "Son of Man, these men have taken idols into their hearts. They've placed the stumbling block that is their own iniquity right in front of their faces. Should I be consulted by them at all?

3 “Son of man, these men have set up [and honored] their idols in their hearts and have put right before their faces the [vile] stumbling block of their wickedness and guilt; should I [permit Myself to] be consulted by them at all?

4 “Therefore, speak to them and tell them: This is what the Lord God says: When anyone from the house of Israel sets up idols in his heart, puts a sinful stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet, I, Yahweh, will answer him appropriately.(a) I will answer him according to his many idols,

4 Therefore speak to them and tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord (a)God, “Any man of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, puts right before his face the stumbling block of his iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will be brought to give him an answer in (b)the matter in view of the (F)multitude of his idols,

4 Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;

4 Therefore, speak up and tell them, "This is what the Lord GOD says, "Every person from Israel's house who follows his idols and sets the stumbling block that is his own sin in front of his face, and then consults a prophet, I the LORD will answer him according to how many idols he embraces.

4 Therefore speak to them and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Any man of the house of Israel who takes his idols [of rebellion] into his heart, and puts the [vile] stumbling block of his wickedness and guilt [images of silver and gold] before his face, and yet comes to the prophet [to ask of him], I the Lord will answer him, [but I will answer him] in accordance with the number of his idols,

5 so that I may take hold of the house of Israel by their hearts. They are all estranged from Me because of their idols.

5 in order to lay hold of (c)(G)the hearts of the house of Israel who are (d)(H)estranged from Me through all their idols.”’

5 That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols.

5 I'll do this in order to capture the hearts of Israel's house who have become alienated from me due to all of their idols."'"

5 in order that I may take hold of the heart (mind) of the house of Israel who are all estranged from Me because of their idols.”’

6 “Therefore, say to the house of Israel: This is what the Lord God says: Repent and turn away(E) from your idols; turn your faces away from all your detestable things.

6 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “(I)Repent and turn away from your idols and turn your faces away from all your (J)abominations.

6 Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.

6 "Therefore you are to tell Israel's house, "This is what the Lord GOD says, "Turn away! Turn away from your idols, and abandon your detestable practices!

6 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Repent and turn away from your idols and turn your faces away from all your disgusting and vile acts.

7 For when anyone from the house of Israel or from the foreigners who reside in Israel separates himself from Me, setting up idols in his heart and putting a sinful stumbling block before his face, and then comes to the prophet to inquire of Me,(b) I, Yahweh, will answer him Myself.

7 For anyone of the house of Israel or of the (K)immigrants who stay in Israel who separates himself from Me, sets up his idols in his heart, puts right before his face the stumbling block of his iniquity, and then comes to the prophet to inquire of Me for himself, (L)I the Lord will be brought to answer him in My own person.

7 For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to inquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:

7 For when a native Israeli or a resident alien abandons me to set up idols in his heart behind my back, and then places the stumbling block of his iniquity right in front of his own face, then approaches a prophet to inquire of me on behalf of his own self-interest, I, the LORD will answer him myself.

7 For anyone of the house of Israel or among the strangers who immigrate to Israel who separates himself from Me, taking his idols into his heart, and puts right before his face the [vile] stumbling block of his wickedness and guilt, and [then] comes to the prophet to ask of Me for himself, I the Lord will answer him Myself.

8 I will turn against that one and make him a sign and a proverb; I will cut him off from among My people.(F) Then you will know that I am Yahweh.

8 I will (M)set My face against that man and make him a (N)sign and (e)a proverb, and I will cut him off from among My people. So you will know that I am the Lord.

8 And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

8 I'm determined to oppose that person and make him an example. Proverbs will be written about him when I eliminate him from my people. Then you'll know that I am the LORD."'"

8 I will set My face against that man [that hypocrite] and will make him a (a)sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from among My people; and you will know [without any doubt] that I am the Lord.

9 “But if the prophet is deceived and speaks a message, it was I, Yahweh, who deceived that prophet.(G) I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel.(H)

9 “But if the prophet is (f)prevailed upon to speak a word, it is I, the Lord, who have (g)prevailed upon that prophet, and I will stretch out My hand against him and (O)destroy him from among My people Israel.

9 And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.

9 "Now as to the prophet, if through deceit he delivers a message, I the LORD have deceived that prophet! I'll reach out in opposition to him and exterminate him from among my people Israel.

9 “But if the prophet [who speaks without My authority] is enticed to speak a word [of his own], it is I the Lord who have caused that prophet [to speak falsely to please the inquirer, thus allowing himself to be a party to the inquirer’s sin], and I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel.

10 They will bear their punishment—the punishment of the one who inquires will be the same as that of the prophet—

10 They will bear the punishment of their iniquity; as the iniquity of the inquirer is, so the iniquity of the prophet will be,

10 And they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity: the punishment of the prophet shall be even as the punishment of him that seeketh unto him;

10 They'll bear the consequences of their guilt, and the prophet will be just as guilty as the one who seeks that prophet's guidance.

10 They [both] will bear the punishment of their wickedness; the sin of the [counterfeit] prophet will be the same as the sin of the [hypocritical] inquirer,

11 in order that the house of Israel may no longer stray from following Me and no longer defile themselves(I) with all their transgressions. Then they will be My people and I will be their God.”(J) This is the declaration of the Lord God.

11 in order that the house of Israel may no longer (P)stray from Me and no longer (Q)defile themselves with all their transgressions. Thus they will be (R)My people, and I shall be their God,”’ declares the Lord God.”

11 That the house of Israel may go no more astray from me, neither be polluted any more with all their transgressions; but that they may be my people, and I may be their God, saith the Lord GOD.

11 Then Israel's house won't wander away from me again, nor will they defile themselves again with all their transgressions. They'll become my people and I'll be their God," declares the Lord GOD.

11 so that the house of Israel may no longer drift away from Me and no longer defile themselves with all their transgressions, but they will be My people, and I will be their God,”’ says the Lord God.”

Jerusalem Will Not Be Spared

12 The word of the Lord came to me:

12 Then the word of the Lord came to me saying,

12 The word of the LORD came again to me, saying,

12 This message came to me from the LORD:

12 The word of the Lord came [again] to me, saying,

13 “Son of man, if a land sins against Me by acting faithlessly, and I stretch out My hand against it to cut off its supply of bread,(K) to send famine through it, and to wipe out both man and animal from it,

13 “Son of man, if a country sins against Me by (S)committing unfaithfulness, and I stretch out My hand against it, (h)destroy its (T)supply of bread, send famine against it and cut off from it both man and beast,

13 Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:

13 "Son of Man, when a nation sins against me by a treacherous act, I'll reach out to oppose it, destroying its source of food, by sending famine against it, and by destroying both people and beast within it.

13 “Son of man, if a land sins against Me by committing unfaithfulness, and I stretch out My hand against it and destroy its source of bread and send famine on it and cut off from it both man and animal,

14 even if these three men(L)—Noah,(M) Daniel,(N) and Job(O)—were in it, they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

14 even (U)though these three men, (V)Noah, (W)Daniel and (X)Job were in its midst, by their own righteousness they could only deliver (Y)themselves,” declares the Lord God.

14 Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD.

14 Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job lived in that land, they would only save their own lives on account of their righteousness," declares the Lord GOD.

14 even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job were in that land, by their own righteousness (right standing with God) they could only save (deliver) themselves,” says the Lord God.

15 “If I allow dangerous animals(P) to pass through the land and depopulate it so that it becomes desolate, with no one passing through it for fear of the animals,

15 “If I were to cause (Z)wild beasts to pass through the land and they (i)depopulated it, and it became desolate so that no one would pass through it because of the beasts,

15 If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts:

15 "If I were to make wild animals pass throughout the land, so that they kill its residents and it were to become desolate because no one will travel through it due to those wild animals,

15 “If I were to cause predatory beasts to pass through the land and they ravaged it and depopulated it of children, and it became desolate so that no one would pass through because of the predators,

16 even if these three men were in it, as I live”—the declaration of the Lord God—“they could not deliver their sons or daughters. They alone would be delivered, but the land would be desolate.(Q)

16 though these three men were in its midst, as I live,” declares the Lord God, “they could not deliver either their sons or their daughters. (AA)They alone would be delivered, but the country would be desolate.

16 Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate.

16 then even though these three men were in it, as I live," says the Lord GOD, "they wouldn't be able to deliver even their sons or daughters. They would only save themselves, but the land would become desolate.

16 though these three men were in the land, as I live,” says the Lord God, “they could not save either their sons or their daughters. They alone would be saved, but the land would be desolate (ruined, deserted).

17 “Or if I bring a sword(R) against that land and say: Let a sword pass through it, so that I wipe out both man and animal from it,(S)

17 Or if I should (AB)bring a sword on that country and say, ‘Let the sword pass through the country and (AC)cut off man and beast from it,’

17 Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it:

17 "Or if I were to bring war to that land and say, "Hey, sword! Pass throughout the land so I can destroy both man and beasts in it,'

17 Or if I were to bring a sword on that land and say, ‘Let a sword go through the land and cut off man and animal from it,’

18 even if these three men were in it, as I live”—the declaration of the Lord God—“they could not deliver their sons or daughters, but they alone would be delivered.

18 even though these three men were in its midst, as I live,” declares the Lord God, “they could not deliver either their sons or their daughters, but they alone would be delivered.

18 Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves.

18 though these three men lived there, as I live," declares the Lord GOD, "they couldn't deliver their own sons and daughters. They would only save themselves.

18 even though these three men were in the land, as I live,” says the Lord God, “they could not save either their sons or their daughters, but they alone would be saved.

19 “Or if I send a plague into that land(T) and pour out My wrath on it with bloodshed to wipe out both man and animal from it,

19 Or if I should send a (AD)plague against that country and pour out My wrath in blood on it to cut off man and beast from it,

19 Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast:

19 "Or if I were to send a pestilence against that land and pour out my anger in it with bloodshed, destroying both man and beast in it,

19 Or if I should send a virulent disease into that land and pour out My wrath in blood on it to cut off man and animal from it,

20 even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live”—the declaration of the Lord God—“they could not deliver their son or daughter. They would deliver only themselves by their righteousness.

20 even though Noah, Daniel and Job were in its midst, as I live,” declares the Lord God, “they could not deliver either their son or their daughter. They would deliver only themselves by their righteousness.”

20 Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

20 even though Noah, Daniel, and Job were among them, as I live" says the Lord GOD, "they couldn't save their own sons or daughters. They would only save their own souls due to their own righteousness."

20 even though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in the land, as I live,” says the Lord God, “they could not save either their son or their daughter; they would save only themselves by their righteousness [that is, their right-standing with God—their moral and spiritual integrity].”

21 “For this is what the Lord God says: How much worse will it be when I send My four(U) devastating judgments against Jerusalem—sword, famine, dangerous animals, and plague—in order to wipe out both man and animal from it!

21 For thus says the Lord God, “How much more when (AE)I send My four (j)severe judgments against Jerusalem: sword, famine, wild beasts and plague to cut off man and beast from it!

21 For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?

21 This is what the Lord GOD says, "I'm sending four of my most destructive judgments military invasion, famine, wild animals, and pestilence into Jerusalem to destroy both human beings and livestock in it.

21 For thus says the Lord God, “How much more when I send My four severe judgments against Jerusalem—sword, famine, predatory beasts, and virulent disease—to cut off man and animal from it!(A)

22 Even so, there will be survivors left in it, sons and daughters who will be brought out. Indeed, they will come out to you, and you will observe their conduct and actions.(V) Then you will be consoled about the devastation I have brought on Jerusalem, about all I have brought on it.

22 Yet, behold, (k)survivors will be left in it who will be brought out, both sons and daughters. Behold, they are going to come forth to you and you will (AF)see their conduct and actions; then you will be (AG)comforted for the calamity which I have brought against Jerusalem for everything which I have brought upon it.

22 Yet, behold, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it.

22 But look! There will be a remnant who escapes, a few sons and daughters to be brought out. Look! They'll come out to you and you'll see how they've lived and what they've done, and you'll be comforted concerning the catastrophe that I brought on Jerusalem, including everything that I brought against her.

22 Yet, behold, survivors will be left in it [escaping the judgments], both sons and daughters. Listen carefully, they are going to come out to you [in Babylon] and you will see their [wicked] conduct and [despicable] actions; then you will be at peace in regard to the disaster which I have brought against Jerusalem for everything which I have brought on it [has been deserved].

23 They will bring you consolation when you see their conduct and actions, and you will know that it was not without cause that I have done what I did to it.”(W) This is the declaration of the Lord God.

23 Then they will comfort you when you see their conduct and actions, for you will know that I have not done (AH)in vain whatever I did (l)to it,” declares the Lord God.

23 And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD.

23 They'll comfort you when you see how they've lived and what they've done, because you'll know for certain that I haven't done anything that I've done against them without any reason," declares the Lord GOD.

23 Then they will reassure (b)you [in regard to the appropriateness of the judgments] when you see their [heinous] conduct and actions, for you will know that I have not done without cause whatever I did to it,” declares the Lord God.
