Christ's One Sacrifice For Sin
1 For the Law, being only a shadow of the good things to come, and not their very substance, its priests cannot with the same sacrifice which year after year they offer continually, make perfect those who draw near.
1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
1 For the Law, since it has only (A)a shadow of (B)the good things to come and not the very (a)form of things, (b)can (C)never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, (D)make perfect those who draw near.
1 Since the law has only a shadow of the good things(A) to come, and not the actual form of those realities, it can never perfect the worshipers by the same sacrifices they continually offer year after year.
1 For the Law, being only a reflection of the blessings to come and not their substance, can never make perfect those who come near by the same sacrifices repeatedly offered year after year.
2 Otherwise would they not have ceased to be offered? Because the worshippers having been once cleansed, would have had no more consciousness of sin.
2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.
2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had (E)consciousness of sins?
2 Otherwise, wouldn’t they have stopped being offered, since the worshipers, once purified, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?
2 Otherwise, would they not have stopped offering them, because the worshipers, cleansed once for all, would no longer be aware of any sins?
3 But on the other hand, in these sacrifices sins are called to memory, year after year.
3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.
3 But in the sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.
3 Instead, through those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year after year,
4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sin.
4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
4 for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
5 It is for this reason that the Christ, on coming into the world, declared. Sacrifice and offerings thou dost not desire, But a body didst thou prepare for me;
5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
5 Therefore, (I)when He comes into the world, He says,“(J)Sacrifice and offering You have not desired,But (K)a body You have prepared for Me;
5 Therefore, as He was coming into the world, He said:You did not want sacrifice and offering,but You prepared a body for Me.
5 For this reason, the Scriptures say, when the Messiah was about to come into the world: "You did not want sacrifices and offerings, but you prepared a body for me.
7 Then I said, "I am come??n the roll of the book it is written of me??o do thy will, O God."
7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
7 “(M)Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come(In (N)the scroll of the book it is written of Me)To do Your will, O God.’”
7 Then I said, “See—it is written about Mein the volume of the scroll—I have come to do Your will, God!”(B)(a)
7 Then I said, "See, I have come to do your will, O God' In the volume of the scroll this is written about me."
8 First when it is said, Thou hast no longing for, thou takest no delight in Sacrifices and offerings, or whole burnt offerings and sin offerings,
8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
8 After saying above, “(O)Sacrifices and offerings and (P)whole burnt offerings and sacrifices (Q)for sin You have not desired, nor have You taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law),
8 After He says above, You did not want or delight in sacrifices and offerings, whole burnt offerings and sin offerings (which are offered according to the law(C)),
8 In this passage he says, "You never wanted or took delight in sacrifices, offerings, burnt offerings, and sin offerings," which are offered according to the Law.
9 (offerings regularly made under the law), and then it is added, Lo, I come to do thy will, he does away with the first, in order that he may establish the second.
9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
9 then He (d)said, “(R)Behold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second.
9 He then says, See, I have come to do Your will.(b) He takes away the first to establish the second.
9 Then he says, "See, I have come to do your will." He takes away the first in order to establish the second.
10 And it is by this will that we have been sanctified by the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
10 By (e)this will we have been (S)sanctified through (T)the offering of (U)the body of Jesus Christ (V)once for all.
10 By this will of God, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all.(D)
10 By God's will we have been sanctified once and for all through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus, the Messiah.
11 For while every priest stands, day after day, at his ministrations, and many times repeats the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins,
11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
11 Every priest stands daily ministering and (W)offering time after time the same sacrifices, which (X)can never take away sins;
11 Every priest stands day after day ministering and offering the same sacrifices time after time, which can never take away sins.(E)
11 Day after day every priest stands and repeatedly offers the same sacrifices that can never take away sins.
12 this Priest, after offering one Sacrifice for sins, sat down forever on God's right hand;
12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
12 but He, having offered one sacrifice (Y)for (f)sins (Z)for all time, (AA)sat down at the right hand of God,
12 But this man, after offering one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.(F)
12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God."
14 For by one single offering he has perfected forever those whom he is sanctifying.
14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are sanctified.
14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
16 "This is the covenant I will make with them After those days," says the Lord. "I will set my laws upon their hearts, And I will inscribe them on their minds."
16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
16 “(AF)This is the covenant that I will make with themAfter those days, says the Lord:I will put My laws upon their heart,And on their mind I will write them,”He then says,
16 This is the covenant I will make with themafter those days, says the Lord:I will put My laws on their heartsand write them on their minds,
16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts and will write them on their minds,
18 But when these have been remitted, there is no more any offering for sin.
18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.
18 Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
18 Now where there is forgiveness of these sins, there is no longer any offering for sin.
Hold Fast The Confession Of Our Hope
19 Since, then, we have a cheerful confidence, brothers, to enter into the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,
19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
19 Therefore, brethren, since we (AH)have confidence to (AI)enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus,(I)
19 Therefore, my brothers, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus,
20 by the way which he dedicated for us, that new and living way, through the veil (that is, his flesh);
20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
20 by (AJ)a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through (AK)the veil, that is, His flesh,
20 the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh),
22 let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled from and evil conscience, and our bodies bathed in pure water.
22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
22 let us (AN)draw near with a (h)sincere heart in (AO)full assurance of faith, having our hearts (AP)sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies (AQ)washed with pure water.
22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.(L)
22 let us continue to come near with sincere hearts in the full assurance that faith provides, because our hearts have been sprinkled clean from a guilty conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope, unwavering (for He is faithful who promised);
23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
23 Let us hold fast the (AR)confession of our (AS)hope without wavering, for (AT)He who promised is faithful;
23 Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.(M)
23 Let us continue to hold firmly to the hope that we confess without wavering, for the one who made the promise is faithful.
Encourage Each Other
24 and let us consider one another, to provoke unto love and good works;
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
24 And let us be concerned about one another in order to promote love and good works,
24 And let us continue to consider how to motivate one another to love and good deeds,
25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the custom of some, but exhorting one another; all the more as you behold the Day drawing near.
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
25 not forsaking our own (AW)assembling together, as is the habit of some, but (AX)encouraging one another; and all the more as you see (AY)the day drawing near.
25 not staying away from our worship meetings, as some habitually do, but encouraging each other,(N) and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another even more as you see the day of the Lord coming nearer.
A Serious Warning Against Continuing Deliberate Sin
26 For if we sin wilfully, after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains any other sacrifice for sins,
26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
26 For if we go on (AZ)sinning willfully after receiving (BA)the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
26 For if we deliberately sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,(O)
26 For if we choose to go on sinning after we have learned the full truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fiery indignation which is about to devour the adversaries.
27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
27 but a terrifying expectation of (BB)judgment and (BC)the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.
27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries.(P)
27 but only a terrifying prospect of judgment and a raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.
28 Any one who set at naught the law of Moses was put to death without pity, on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
28 (BD)Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
28 If anyone disregards Moses’ law, he dies without mercy, based on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(Q)
28 Anyone who violates the Law of Moses dies without mercy "on the testimony of two or three witnesses."
29 How much surer, think you, will be the punishment of one who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has profaned that covenant blood with which he was sanctified, and has done despite to the spirit of grace?
29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
29 (BE)How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve (BF)who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean (BG)the blood of the covenant (BH)by which he was sanctified, and has (BI)insulted the Spirit of grace?
29 How much worse punishment do you think one will deserve who has trampled on the Son of God, regarded as profane(d) the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and insulted the Spirit of grace?(R)
29 How much more severe a punishment do you think that person deserves who tramples on God's Son, treats as common the blood of the covenant by which it was sanctified, and insults the Spirit of grace?
30 For we know Him who said, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, and again, The Lord will judge his people.
30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
30 For we know Him who said, “(BJ)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “(BK)The Lord will judge His people.”
30 For we know the One who has said, Vengeance belongs to Me, I will repay,(e)(f) and again, The Lord will judge His people.(S)(g)
30 For we know the one who said, "Vengeance belongs to me; I will pay them back," and again, "The Lord will judge his people."
32 But ever call to mind the former days, in which, after having been enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings;
32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;
32 But remember (BN)the former days, (i)when, after being (BO)enlightened, you endured a great (BP)conflict of sufferings,
32 Remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings.(U)
32 But you must continue to remember those earlier days, how after you were enlightened you endured a hard and painful struggle.
33 partly by being made a public spectacle in reproaches and afflictions, and partly by sharing the fortunes of those that were so used.
33 Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.
33 partly by being (BQ)made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming (BR)sharers with those who were so treated.
33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to taunts and afflictions, and at other times you were companions of those who were treated that way.(V)
33 At times you were made a public spectacle by means of insults and persecutions, while at other times you associated with people who were treated this way.
34 For you did sympathize with the prisoners, and you did take joyfully the confiscation of your goods; conscious that you had for yourselves greater, even lasting possessions.
34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.
34 For you (BS)showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted (BT)joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves (BU)a better possession and a lasting one.
34 For you sympathized with the prisoners(h) and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, knowing that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession.(i)(W)
34 For you sympathized with the prisoners and cheerfully submitted to the violent seizure of your property, because you know that you have a better and more permanent possession.
36 For you need stedfastness, so that after having done the will of God, you may receive the promise,
36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.
36 For you have need of (BX)endurance, so that when you have (BY)done the will of God, you may (BZ)receive (j)what was promised.
36 For you need endurance, so that after you have done God’s will, you may receive what was promised.(Y)
36 For you need endurance, so that after you have done God's will you can receive what he has promised.
37 For yet a very, very little while, and then The Coming One will have come, without delay.
37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.
37 For yet in a very little while,the Coming One will come and not delay.
37 For "in a very little while the one who is coming will return he will not delay;
38 But it is by faith that my Righteous One will live, And if he draws back, my soul takes no pleasure in him.
38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
38 (CC)But My righteous one shall live by faith;And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him.
38 but my righteous one will live by faith, and if he turns back, my soul will take no pleasure in him."
39 "But we are not of defections unto perdition, but of faith unto the gaining of the soul."
39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
39 But (k)we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the (l)preserving of the soul.
39 But we are not those who draw back and are destroyed, but those who have faith and obtain life.
39 Now, we do not belong to those who turn back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.
