1 (A)When Ephraim (a)spoke, there was trembling.He (B)exalted himself in Israel,But through (C)Baal he (b)did wrong and died.
1 When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.
1 When Ephraim spoke,(A) there was trembling;he was exalted in Israel.(B)But he incurred guilt through Baal(C) and died.
1 "When the tribe of Ephraim spoke, there was trembling; and it was exalted within Israel. But when they offended God by Baal, they died,
1 When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling and terror. He exalted himself [above the other tribes] in Israel; But through [the worship of] Baal he became guilty and died [spiritually, and then came ruin, sealing Israel’s doom as a nation].
2 And now they sin more and more,And make for themselves (D)molten images,Idols (c)(E)skillfully made from their silver,All of them the (F)work of craftsmen. They say of them, “Let the (d)men who sacrifice kiss the (G)calves!”
2 And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.
2 Now they continue to sinand make themselves a cast image,(D)idols skillfully made from their silver,(E)all of them the work of craftsmen.(F)People say about them,“Let the men who sacrifice(a) kiss the calves.”(G)
2 but now they are sinning more and more, crafting idols from melted silver. Their idols are made with the most exacting skill, all of it the work of craftsmen. People say about them, "They offer human sacrifice, and kiss calf-shaped idols.'
2 And now they sin more and more,And make for themselves molten images,Idols skillfully made from their silver [as it pleased them],All of them the work of the craftsmen. They say of these [very works of their hands], “Let those who sacrifice kiss and show respect to the calves [as if they were living gods]!”
3 Therefore they will be like the (H)morning cloudAnd like dew which (e)soon disappears,Like (I)chaff which is blown away from the threshing floorAnd like (J)smoke from a (f)chimney.
3 Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.
3 Therefore, they will be like the morning mist,(H)like the early dew that vanishes, like chaff blown from a threshing floor,(I)or like smoke from a window.(J)
3 Therefore they will be like morning clouds, like early morning dew that evaporates, like chaff blown away from the threshing floor, or like smoke from a chimney."
3 Therefore they will be [swiftly dissipated] like the morning cloudOr like dew which soon disappears,Like chaff which swirls with the whirlwind from the threshing floor,And like smoke from the chimney or through the window [worthless and without substance —they will vanish].
4 Yet I have been the (K)Lord your GodSince the land of Egypt; And you were not to know (L)any god except Me,For there is no savior (M)besides Me.
4 Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.
4 I have been Yahweh your God(K)ever since(b) the land of Egypt;you know no God but Me,(L)and no Savior exists besides Me.(M)
4 "I am the LORD your God from the land of Egypt, and you have known no god except for me, because except for me there is no savior.
4 Yet I have been the Lord your GodSince [the time you became a nation in] the land of Egypt; And you were not to know any god except Me,For there is no savior besides Me.
5 I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.
5 I took care of you in the wilderness, in a waterless land.
5 I knew and regarded you and cared for you in the wilderness,In the land of drought.
6 As they had their pasture, they became (P)satisfied,And being satisfied, their (Q)heart became proud; Therefore they (R)forgot Me.
6 According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.
6 When they had pasture, they became satisfied;(O)they were satisfied, and their hearts became proud.(P)Therefore they forgot Me.(Q)
6 As their pastures flourished, all their desires were met. As they were satiated, they became arrogant and therefore ignored me.
6 When they had their pasture, they became satisfied,And being satisfied, their heart became proud (self-centered);Therefore they forgot Me.
7 Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them:
7 "So I will be like a lion to them. Like a leopard I will stalk them along the road.
7 So I will be like a lion to them;Like a leopard I will watch and lie in wait [ready to attack] by the road [to Assyria].
8 I will encounter them (U)like a bear robbed of her cubs,And I will tear open (i)their chests;There I will also (V)devour them like a lioness,As a wild beast would tear them.
8 I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.
8 I will attack themlike a bear robbed of her cubsand tear open the rib cage over their hearts.I will devour them there like a lioness,(T)like a wild beast that would rip them open.
8 I will confront them like a bear deprived of her cubs; I will tear open their ribs. I will devour them like a lion the wild beasts will rip them apart.
8 I will encounter them like a bear robbed of her cubs,And I will tear open their chests; There I will also devour them like a lioness,As a wild beast would tear them.
9 O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.
9 "You have destroyed yourself, Israel, although I remain your help.
9 It is your destruction, O Israel,Because you are against Me, [and have rebelled] against your help.
10 Where now is your (Y)kingThat he may save you in all your cities,And your (Z)judges of whom you (k)requested,“Give me a king and princes”?
10 I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?
10 Where now is your king,(e)(V)that he may save you in all your cities, and the(f) rulers(g)(W) you demanded, saying,“Give me a king and leaders”?
10 Now where is your king? Will he save you in all your cities? And where are your judges, about whom you demanded, "Give me a king and officials!'?
10 Where now is your kingThat he may save you [when you are attacked] in all your cities? And your judges of whom you asked,“Give me a king and princes”?
11 I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.
11 I gave you a king in my anger, and I took him away in my fury."
11 I gave you a king in My anger,And I took him away in My wrath [as punishment].
12 The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is hid.
12 "Ephraim's guilt is on record; his sin is stored away.
12 The wickedness of Ephraim [which is not yet completely punished] is bound up [as in a bag];His sin is stored up [for judgment and destruction].
13 The pains of (AD)childbirth come upon him;He is (AE)not a wise son,For (l)it is not the time that he should (AF)delay at the opening of the womb.
13 The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.
13 Labor pains come on him.(AA)He is not a wise son;(AB)when the time comes,he will not be born.(h)(AC)
13 When the time of childbirth comes, he will be so foolish that he will refuse to be born."
13 The pains of childbirth come on him;But he is not a wise son,For it is not the time to delay [his chance at a new birth] as the womb opens [but he ignores the opportunity to change].
14 Shall I (AG)ransom them from the (m)power of Sheol?Shall I redeem them from death?(AH)O Death, where are your thorns?O Sheol, where is your sting?(AI)Compassion will be hidden from My sight.
14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.
14 I will ransom them from the power of Sheol.I will redeem(i) them from death.(AD)Death, where are your barbs?Sheol, where is your sting?(AE)Compassion is hidden from My eyes.(AF)
14 "From the power of Sheol I will rescue them, from death I will redeem them. Death, where are your plagues? Sheol, where is your destruction? My eyes will remain closed to your pleas for compassion.

15 Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.
15 Although he flourishes among his brothers,(j)(AG)an east wind will come,(AH)a wind from the Lord rising up from the desert. His water source will fail, and his spring will run dry.(AI)The wind(k) will plunder the treasury(AJ)of every precious item.
15 Even though he is fruitful compared to his relatives, an east wind will come, the LORD's wind storm from the wilderness, and his spring will evaporate. His fountain will dry up, and the LORD's wind storm will plunder all the expensive vessels of the treasury.
15 For though he flourishes among the reeds (his fellow tribes),An east wind (Assyria) will come,The breath of the Lord rising from the desert; And Ephraim’s spring will become dryAnd his fountain will be dried up.Assyria will plunder his treasury of every precious object.
