The Priests Are A Snare

1 Hear this, priests!(A)Pay attention, house of Israel!Listen, royal house!For the judgment applies to youbecause you have been a snare at Mizpah(B)and a net spread out on Tabor.

1 Hear this, O priests!Give heed, O house of Israel!Listen, O house of the king!For the judgment applies to you,For you have been a (A)snare at MizpahAnd a net spread out on Tabor.

1 Hear ye this, O priests; and hearken, ye house of Israel; and give ye ear, O house of the king; for judgment is toward you, because ye have been a snare on Mizpah, and a net spread upon Tabor.

1 "Hear this, priests, pay attention, house of Israel, listen, royal family! For judgment is coming your way, because you have been a trap to Mizpah, a snare spread out on Mount Tabor.

1 Hear this and pay close attention, O priests!Give heed, O house of Israel!Listen, O house of the king!For the [pronounced] judgment pertains to you and is meant for you to hear,Because you have been a snare at MizpahAnd a net spread out over Tabor (military strongholds on either side of the Jordan River).

2 Rebels(C) are deeply involved in slaughter;(D)I will be a punishment for all of them.(a)

2 The (B)revolters have (a)(C)gone deep in depravity,But I will chastise all of them.

2 And the revolters are profound to make slaughter, though I have been a rebuker of them all.

2 The rebels are deep into their slaughter; I am punishing them all.

2 The revolters have gone deep into depravity,But I [the Lord God] will chastise them all.

3 I know Ephraim,(E)and Israel is not hidden from Me.For now, Ephraim,(F)you have acted promiscuously;Israel is defiled.

3 I (D)know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me;For now, O Ephraim, you have played the harlot,Israel has defiled itself.

3 I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me: for now, O Ephraim, thou committest whoredom, and Israel is defiled.

3 I know Ephraim, and Israel cannot hide from me, since you, Ephraim, have been acting like a prostitute, defiling Israel.

3 I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me;For now, O Ephraim, you have played the prostitute and have worshiped idols;Israel has defiled itself.

Hosea Warns Against Idolatry

4 Their actions do not allow themto return to their God,(G)for a spirit of promiscuity is among them,(H)and they do not know the Lord.(I)

4 Their deeds will not allow themTo return to their God.For a (E)spirit of harlotry is within them,And they (F)do not know the Lord.

4 They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the LORD.

4 "Their actions hinder them from turning to their God, because a spirit of fornication is in their midst, and the LORD they do not know.

4 Their [immoral] practices will not permit themTo return to their God,For the spirit of prostitution is within themAnd they do not know the Lord [they do not recognize, appreciate, heed or cherish Him].

5 Israel’s arrogance testifies against them.(b)(J)Both Israel and Ephraim stumblebecause of their wickedness;(K)even Judah will stumble with them.(L)

5 Moreover, the (G)pride of Israel testifies against him,And Israel and Ephraim stumble in their iniquity;(H)Judah also has stumbled with them.

5 And the pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity; Judah also shall fall with them.

5 The arrogance of Israel testifies against him; therefore Israel and Ephraim will stumble in their iniquity, and Judah with them.

5 But the pride and self-reliance of Israel testifies against him.Therefore Israel, and [especially] (a)Ephraim, stumble and fall in their wickedness and guilt;(b)Judah also has stumbled with them.

6 They go with their flocks and herdsto seek the Lord(M)but do not find Him;(N)He has withdrawn from them.(O)

6 They will (I)go with their flocks and herdsTo seek the Lord, but they will (J)not find Him;He has (K)withdrawn from them.

6 They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them.

6 They will go with their flocks and herds to seek the LORD, but they will not find him; he has withdrawn from them.

6 They will go with their flocks and with their herdsTo seek the Lord [diligently searching for Him], but they will not find Him;He has withdrawn from them [refusing to hear the prayers of the unrepentant].

7 They betrayed the Lord;(P)indeed, they gave birth to illegitimate children.(Q)Now the New Moon(R) will devour themalong with their fields.(S)

7 They have (L)dealt treacherously against the Lord,For they have borne (b)(M)illegitimate children.Now the (N)new moon will devour them with their (c)land.

7 They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.

7 They have been unfaithful to the LORD, having raised unbelieving children. In the coming month they will be devoured, along with their fields.

7 They have dealt treacherously against the Lord,For they have borne illegitimate (pagan) children.Now the (c)New Moon will devour them along with their land [bringing judgment and captivity].

War Between Judah And Israel

8 Blow the horn in Gibeah,(T)the trumpet in Ramah;(U)raise the war cry in Beth-aven:(V)After you, Benjamin!(W)

8 (O)Blow the horn in (P)Gibeah,The trumpet in Ramah.Sound an alarm at Beth-aven:(Q)Behind you, Benjamin!”

8 Blow ye the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah: cry aloud at Bethaven, after thee, O Benjamin.

8 "Sound the trumpet in Gibeah, and the alarm in Ramah. Cry out at Beth-aven Go out, Benjamin!

8 Blow the horn in Gibeah,The trumpet in Ramah [the lofty hills on Benjamin’s northern border].Sound the alarm at Beth-aven:“Behind you and coming after you [is the enemy], O Benjamin [be on guard]!”

9 Ephraim will become a desolation(X)on the day of punishment;(Y)I announce what is certainamong the tribes of Israel.(Z)

9 Ephraim will become a (R)desolation in the (S)day of rebuke;Among the tribes of Israel I (T)declare what is sure.

9 Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be.

9 Ephraim will be desolate when it is rebuked. I have made known among the tribes of Israel what will surely come about.

9 Ephraim will become a desolation in the day of rebuke;Among the tribes of Israel I declare what is certain.

10 The princes of Judah are like thosewho move boundary markers;(AA)I will pour out My fury(AB) on them like water.(AC)

10 The princes of Judah have become like those who (U)move a boundary;On them I will (V)pour out My wrath (W)like water.

10 The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound: therefore I will pour out my wrath upon them like water.

10 The princes of Judah have become like those who move boundary markers: I will pour out my anger on them like water.

10 The princes of Judah are like those who (d)move a boundary marker;I will pour out My wrath on them like [an unrestrained flood of] water.(A)

11 Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment,(AD)for he is determined to follow what is worthless.(c)

11 Ephraim is (X)oppressed, crushed in judgment,(Y)Because he was determined to (d)follow man’s command.

11 Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment.

11 Ephraim is crushed, broken by judgment, because he willingly pursued idols.

11 Ephraim is oppressed; he is broken and crushed by [divine] judgment,Because he was determined to follow man’s command (e)(vanities, filth, secular precepts).

12 So I am like rot to Ephraim(AE)and like decay to the house of Judah.

12 Therefore I am like a (Z)moth to EphraimAnd like rottenness to the house of Judah.

12 Therefore will I be unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as rottenness.

12 Therefore I will consume Ephraim like a moth, and the house of Judah as rottenness consumes.

12 Therefore I am like a moth to EphraimAnd like dry rot to the house of Judah [in My judgment against them].

13 When Ephraim saw his sicknessand Judah his wound,Ephraim went to Assyria(AF)and sent a delegation to the great king.(d)(AG)But he cannot cure you or heal your wound.(AH)

13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,And Judah his (e)wound,Then Ephraim went to (AA)AssyriaAnd sent to (f)(AB)King Jareb.But he is (AC)unable to heal you,Or to cure you of your (g)wound.

13 When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound.

13 When Ephraim examined his illness and Judah his injury, then Ephraim went to Assyria, and inquired of the great king; but he could not cure you nor heal your injury.

13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,And Judah his wound,Then Ephraim went to Assyria [instead of the Lord]And sent to [Assyria’s] great King Jareb [for help].But he cannot heal youNor will he cure you of your wound [received in judgment].

14 For I am like a lion to Ephraim(AI)and like a young lion to the house of Judah.Yes, I will tear them to pieces and depart.(AJ)I will carry them off,and no one can rescue them.(AK)

14 For I will be (AD)like a lion to EphraimAnd like a young lion to the house of Judah.(AE)I, even I, will tear to pieces and go away,I will carry away, and there will be (AF)none to deliver.

14 For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him.

14 Therefore I will be like a lion to Ephraim, and like a young lion to the house of Judah. I even I will tear them to pieces, and then I will leave. I will take them away, and there will be no rescue.

14 For I will be like a lion to EphraimAnd like a young lion to the house of Judah.I, even I, will tear to pieces and go on [tearing];I will carry off [the prey] and there will be no one to rescue them.

15 I will depart and return to My placeuntil they recognize their guilt and seek My face;(AL)they will search for Me in their distress.(AM)

15 I will go away and return to My placeUntil they (h)(AG)acknowledge their guilt and seek My face;In their affliction they will earnestly (AH)seek Me.

15 I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

15 "I will leave and go back to my place until they admit their offense and seek my face. When affliction comes to them, they will eagerly seek me."

15 I will go away and return to My place [on high]Until they acknowledge their offense and bear their guilt and seek My face;In their distress they will earnestly seek Me, saying,
