Moab's Hopeless Situation
1 And they will send ... to the mountain of the daughter of Zion.
1 Send ye the lamb to the ruler of the land from Sela to the wilderness, unto the mount of the daughter of Zion.
1 (A)Send the tribute lamb to the ruler of the land,From (a)(B)Sela by way of the wilderness to the (C)mountain of the daughter of Zion.
1 Send lambs to the ruler of the land,(A)from Sela in the desert(B)to the mountain of Daughter Zion.
1 "Send a lamb to the ruler of the land, from Selah, by way of the desert, to the mountain of the Daughter of Zion.
2 For the daughters of Moab will be like wandering birds, like a place from which the young birds have gone in flight, at the ways across the Arnon.
2 For it shall be, that, as a wandering bird cast out of the nest, so the daughters of Moab shall be at the fords of Arnon.
2 Then, like (b)(D)fleeing birds or scattered (c)nestlings,The daughters of (E)Moab will be at the fords of the (F)Arnon.
2 Like a bird fleeing, forced from the nest, the daughters of Moabwill be at the fords of the Arnon.
2 Like fluttering birds, like an abandoned nest, so are the daughters of Moab at the fords of the Arnon River.
3 Give wise directions, make a decision; let your shade be as night in full day: keep safe those who are in flight; do not give up the wandering ones.
3 Take counsel, execute judgment; make thy shadow as the night in the midst of the noonday; hide the outcasts; bewray not him that wandereth.
3 “(d)Give us advice, make a decision;(e)Cast your (G)shadow like night (f)at high noon;(H)Hide the outcasts, do not betray the fugitive.
3 Give us counsel and make a decision.Shelter us at noondaywith shade that is as dark as night.Hide the refugees;(C)do not betray the one who flees.
3 "Give us advice; reach a decision! Cast your shadow as if night had come at high noon. Shelter the fugitives, And don't betray a single refugee.
4 Let those who have been forced out of Moab have a resting-place with you; be a cover to them from him who is making waste their land: till the cruel ones are cut off, and wasting has come to an end, and those who take pleasure in crushing the poor are gone from the land.
4 Let mine outcasts dwell with thee, Moab; be thou a covert to them from the face of the spoiler: for the extortioner is at an end, the spoiler ceaseth, the oppressors are consumed out of the land.
4 “Let the (g)outcasts of Moab stay with you;Be a hiding place to them from the destroyer.”For the extortioner has come to an end, destruction has ceased,(I)Oppressors have completely disappeared from the land.
4 Let my refugees stay with you;be a refuge for Moab(a) from the aggressor. When the oppressor has gone, destruction has ended, and marauders have vanished from the land.
4 Let the fugitives from Moab settle among you; be a shelter to them from the destroyer. When the oppressor comes to an end, and destruction has ceased, and the marauder has vanished from the land,
5 Then a king's seat will be based on mercy, and one will be seated on it in the tent of David for ever; judging uprightly, and quick to do righteousness.
5 And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness.
5 A (J)throne will even be established in lovingkindness,And a judge will sit on it in faithfulness in the tent of (K)David; Moreover, he will seek justiceAnd be prompt in righteousness.
5 Then in the tent of Davida throne will be established by faithful love.(D)A judge who seeks what is rightand is quick to execute justicewill sit on the throne forever.
5 then a throne will be established in gracious love, and there will sit in faithfulness in the Tent of David one who judges, seeks justice, and is swift to do what is right."
6 We have had word of the pride of Moab, how great it is; how he is lifted up in pride and passion: his high words about himself are false.
6 We have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud: even of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his wrath: but his lies shall not be so.
6 (L)We have heard of the pride of Moab, an excessive pride;Even of his arrogance, pride, and fury;(M)His idle boasts are (h)false.
6 We have heard of Moab’s pride(E)—how very proud he is—his haughtiness, his pride, his arrogance, and his empty boasting.
6 "We've heard about Moab's pride so very proud he became! his arrogance, his pride, and his insolence; therefore he is alone.
7 For this cause everyone in Moab will give cries of grief for Moab: crushed to the earth, they will be weeping for the men of Kir-hareseth.
7 Therefore shall Moab howl for Moab, every one shall howl: for the foundations of Kirhareseth shall ye mourn; surely they are stricken.
7 Therefore Moab will wail; everyone of Moab will wail. You will moan for the (N)raisin cakes of (O)Kir-haresethAs those who are utterly stricken.
7 Therefore let Moab wail;let every one of them wail for Moab.Mourn, you who are completely devastated, for the raisin cakes(F) of Kir-hareseth.(G)
7 Therefore, let Moab not wail, let everyone wail for Moab. Lament and grieve deeply for the ruined remains of Kir-hareseth.
8 For the fields of Heshbon are waste, the vine of Sibmah is dead; the lords of nations were overcome by the produce of her vines; her vine-plants went as far as Jazer, and came even to the waste land; her branches were stretched out to the sea.
8 For the fields of Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah: the lords of the heathen have broken down the principal plants thereof, they are come even unto Jazer, they wandered through the wilderness: her branches are stretched out, they are gone over the sea.
8 For the fields of (P)Heshbon have (i)withered, the vines of (Q)Sibmah as well; The lords of the nations have trampled down its choice clustersWhich reached as far as Jazer and wandered to the deserts;(R)Its tendrils spread themselves out and passed over the sea.
8 For Heshbon’s terraced vineyardsand the grapevines of Sibmah have withered. The rulers of the nationshave trampled its choice vinesthat reached as far as Jazer(H)and spread to the desert.Their shoots spread outand reached the Dead Sea.(I)
8 For the fields of Heshbon wither, as well as the vines of Sibmah. The rulers of the nations have struck down its choicest vines, which once reached Jazer and pushed to the desert. Its shoots spread out and passed over the sea."
9 For this cause my sorrow for the vine of Sibmah will be like the weeping for Jazer: my eyes are dropping water on you, O Heshbon and Elealeh! For they are sounding the war-cry over your summer fruits and the getting in of your grain;
9 Therefore I will bewail with the weeping of Jazer the vine of Sibmah: I will water thee with my tears, O Heshbon, and Elealeh: for the shouting for thy summer fruits and for thy harvest is fallen.
9 Therefore I will (S)weep bitterly for Jazer, for the vine of Sibmah;I will drench you with my tears, O (T)Heshbon and Elealeh; For the shouting over your (U)summer fruits and your harvest has fallen away.
9 So I join with Jazerto weep for the vines of Sibmah;I drench Heshbon and Elealeh with my tears.Triumphant shouts have fallen silent(b)over your summer fruit and your harvest.
9 "Therefore I weep with the tears of Jazer for the vines of Sibmah. I drench you with my tears, O Heshbon and Elealeh for the shouts of joy over your summer fruit and your grain harvest have ended.
10 And all joy is gone; no longer are they glad for the fertile field; and in the vine-gardens there are no songs or sounds of joy: the crushing of grapes has come to an end, and its glad cry has been stopped.
10 And gladness is taken away, and joy out of the plentiful field; and in the vineyards there shall be no singing, neither shall there be shouting: the treaders shall tread out no wine in their presses; I have made their vintage shouting to cease.
10 (V)Gladness and joy are taken away from the fruitful field; In the (W)vineyards also there will be no cries of joy or jubilant shouting,No (X)treader treads out wine in the presses,For I have made the shouting to cease.
10 Joy and rejoicing(J) have been removed from the orchard;no one is singing or shouting for joy in the vineyards.(K)No one tramples grapes(c) in the winepresses.I have put an end to the shouting.
10 Joy and gladness are taken away from the orchards, in the vineyards people will sing no songs, and no cheers are raised. No vintner treads out wine in the presses, because I've put an end to the shouting.
12 And when Moab goes up to the high place, and makes prayer in the house of his god, it will have no effect.
12 And it shall come to pass, when it is seen that Moab is weary on the high place, that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray; but he shall not prevail.
12 So it will come about when Moab (Z)presents himself,When he (AA)wearies himself upon his (AB)high placeAnd comes to his sanctuary to pray,That he will not prevail.
12 When Moab appears on the high place, when he tires(d) himself out(M)and comes to his sanctuary to pray,it will do him no good.(N)
12 When Moab appears, when he arrives upon the high place and comes to his sanctuary to pray, he will not prevail."
13 This is the word which the Lord said about Moab in the past.
13 This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning Moab since that time.
13 This is the word which the Lord spoke earlier concerning Moab.
13 This is the message that the Lord previously announced about Moab.
13 This was the message that the LORD spoke concerning Moab in the past.
14 But now the Lord has said, In three years, the years of a servant working for payment, the glory of Moab, all that great people, will be turned to shame, and the rest of Moab will be very small and without honour.
14 But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be contemned, with all that great multitude; and the remnant shall be very small and feeble.
14 But now the Lord speaks, saying, “Within three years, as (l)(AC)a hired man would count them, the glory of (AD)Moab will be degraded along with all his great population, and his remnant will be very small and (m)impotent.”
14 And now the Lord says, “In three years, as a hired worker counts years,(O) Moab’s splendor will become an object of contempt, in spite of a very large population. And those who are left will be few and weak.”
14 But now the LORD has spoken again: "Within three years, like the years of a contract worker, Moab's glory will be brought into contempt, in spite of all its great multitude, and its survivors will be very few and of no importance."
