The Judgment On The Earth

1 Behold, the LORD shall waste and plague the world, he shall make the face of the earth desolate, and scatter abroad the inhabiters thereof.

1 Behold, the Lord (A)lays the earth waste, devastates it, distorts its surface and scatters its inhabitants.

1 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.

1 Look, the Lord is stripping the earth bareand making it desolate. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants:

1 "Watch out! The LORD is about to depopulate the land and devastate it; he will turn it upside down and scatter its inhabitants.

2 Then shall the priest be as the people, the master as the servant, the dame like the maid, the seller like the buyer, he that lendeth upon usury, like him that borroweth upon usury, the creditor as the debtor.

2 And the people will be like the priest, the servant like his master, the maid like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the (B)creditor like the debtor.

2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.

2 people and priest alike, servant and master, female servant and mistress, buyer and seller, lender and borrower, creditor and debtor.

2 It will be the same for the lay people as for priests, the same for servants as for their masters, for female servants as for their mistresses, for buyers as for sellers, for lenders as for borrowers, and for creditors as for debtors.

3 Yea miserably shall the world be wasted and clean destroyed. For the LORD hath so determined in himself.

3 The earth will be completely laid waste and completely despoiled, for the Lord has spoken this word.

3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word.

3 The earth will be stripped completely bareand will be totally plundered, for the Lord has spoken this message.(A)

3 The earth will be utterly depopulated and completely laid waste for the LORD has spoken this message.

4 The earth shall be heavy and decay: The face of the earth shall perish and fall away, the proud people of the world shall come to naught.

4 The (C)earth mourns and withers, the world fades and withers, the (D)exalted of the people of the earth fade away.

4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.

4 The earth mourns and withers;the world wastes away and withers;the exalted people of the earth waste away.

4 "The earth dries up and withers; the world languishes and fades away; heaven fades away, along with the earth.

5 For the earth is corrupt of her indwellers. For why? They have offended the law, changed the ordinances, and broken the everlasting covenant.

5 The earth is also (E)polluted (a)by its inhabitants, for they transgressed laws, violated statutes, (F)broke the everlasting covenant.

5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.

5 The earth is polluted by its inhabitants,(B)for they have transgressed teachings, overstepped decrees, and broken the everlasting covenant.(C)

5 The earth lies defiled beneath its inhabitants; because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant.

6 Therefore hath the curse consumed the earth; and they that dwell therein are fallen into trespass. Wherefore the inhabiters of the earth are perished with drought, and those that remain shall be very few.

6 Therefore, a (G)curse devours the earth, and those who live in it are held guilty. Therefore, the (H)inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left.

6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

6 Therefore a curse has consumed the earth,(D)and its inhabitants have become guilty;the earth’s inhabitants have been burned, and only a few survive.

6 Therefore the curse keeps on consuming, and its inhabitants are declared guilty. Furthermore, the inhabitants of earth are ablaze, and few people are left.

7 The sweet wine shall mourn, the grapes shall be weak, and all that have been merry in heart, shall sigh.

7 The (I)new wine mourns,The vine decays,All the merry-hearted sigh.

7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh.

7 The new wine mourns;(E)the vine withers. All the carousers now groan.

7 The new wine evaporates; the vine and the oil dry up; all the merrymakers groan.

8 The mirth of tabrets shall be laid down, the cheer of the joyful shall cease, and the pleasure of lutes shall have an end:

8 The (J)gaiety of tambourines ceases,The noise of revelers stops,The gaiety of the harp ceases.

8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.

8 The joyful tambourines(F) have ceased. The noise of the jubilant has stopped. The joyful lyre has ceased.

8 "The celebrations of the tambourine have ended, the noise of the jubilant has stopped, and the mirth that the harp produces has ended.

9 there shall no more wine be drunk with mirth, the beer shall be bitter to them that drink it;

9 They do not drink wine with song;(K)Strong drink is (L)bitter to those who drink it.

9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.

9 They no longer sing and drink wine;beer is bitter to those who drink it.

9 No longer do they drink wine accompanied by singing; even beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.

10 the wicked cities shall be broken down, all houses shall be shut that no man may come in.

10 The (M)city of chaos is broken down;(N)Every house is shut up so that none may enter.

10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.

10 The city of chaos is shattered;(G)every house is closed to entry.(H)

10 The chaotic city lies broken down; every house is closed up so that no one can enter them.

11 In the streets shall there be lift up a cry because of wine, all men's cheer shall vanish away, and all joy of the earth shall pass.

11 There is an (O)outcry in the streets concerning the wine;(P)All joy (b)turns to gloom. The gaiety of the earth is banished.

11 There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.

11 In the streets they cry(a) for wine. All joy grows dark;earth’s rejoicing goes into exile.

11 There is an outcry in the streets over wine; all cheer turns to gloom; the fun times of the earth are banished.

12 Desolation shall remain in the cities, and the gates shall be smitten with destruction.

12 Desolation is left in the cityAnd the (Q)gate is battered to ruins.

12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.

12 Only desolation remains in the city;its gate has collapsed in ruins.

12 Desolation remains in the city whose gates lie battered into ruins.

13 For it shall happen unto all lands and to all people, like as when a man smiteth down the olives, that are left upon the tree: or seeketh after grapes, when the wine gathering is out.

13 For (R)thus it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples,As the (c)shaking of an olive tree,As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over.

13 When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.

13 For this is how it will be on earthamong the nations:like a harvested olive tree, like a gleaning after a grape harvest.(I)

13 So it will be on the earth and among the nations as when an olive tree is beaten, or as gleanings when the grape harvest has ended."

14 And those same that remain shall lift up their voice, and be glad, and shall magnify the glory of the LORD, even from the sea

14 (S)They raise their voices, they shout for joy; They cry out from the (d)west concerning the majesty of the Lord.

14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea.

14 They raise their voices, they sing out;they proclaim in the westthe majesty of the Lord.

14 "They raise their voices; they shout for joy; from the west they shout aloud over the LORD's majesty.

15 and praise the name of the LORD God of Israel in the valleys and Islands.

15 Therefore (T)glorify the Lord in the (e)east,The (U)name of the Lord, the God of Israel,In the (f)(V)coastlands of the sea.

15 Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea.

15 Therefore, in the east honor the Lord!In the islands of the westhonor the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.

15 Therefore, you in the east, give glory to the LORD! You in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD God of Israel!

16 We heard songs sung to the praise of the righteous, from all the ends of the world. And I said, "O mine unfruitfulness! O my poverty! Woe is me! The transgressors have offended; the transgressors have grievously offended!"

16 From the (W)ends of the earth we hear songs, “(X)Glory to the Righteous One,”But I say, “(g)(Y)Woe to me! (h)Woe to me! Alas for me!The (Z)treacherous deal treacherously,And the treacherous deal very treacherously.”

16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.

16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs:The Splendor of the Righteous One.(J)But I said, “I waste away! I waste away!(b)Woe is me.”The treacherous act treacherously;the treacherous deal very treacherously.(K)

16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise: "Glory to the Righteous One!' "But I say, "I am pining away, I'm pining away. How terrible things are for me! For treacherous people betray treacherous people are betraying with treachery!'"

17 Fearfulness, the pit, and the snare are upon thee, O thou that dwellest upon the earth.

17 (AA)Terror and pit and snare(i)Confront you, O inhabitant of the earth.

17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.

17 Panic, pit, and trap await you(L)who dwell on the earth.(M)

17 "Terror and pit and snare are coming in your direction, you inhabitants of the earth!

18 It will come to pass, that whoso escapeth the terrible cry, shall fall in to the pit. And if he come out of the pit, he shall be taken with the snare. For the windows above shall be opened, and the foundations of the earth shall move.

18 Then it will be that he who flees the (j)report of disaster will fall into the pit,And he who (k)climbs out of the pit will be caught in the snare; For the (AB)windows (l)above are opened, and the (AC)foundations of the earth shake.

18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.

18 Whoever flees at the sound of panicwill fall into a pit,and whoever escapes from the pitwill be caught in a trap. For the windows are opened from heaven,(N)and the foundations of the earth are shaken.(O)

18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit, and whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. For the windows of judgment from above are opened, and the foundations of the earth are shaken.

19 The earth shall give a great crack, it shall have a sore ruin, and take a horrible fall.

19 (AD)The earth is broken asunder,The earth is (AE)split through,The earth is shaken violently.

19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.

19 The earth is completely devastated;the earth is split open;the earth is violently shaken.

19 The earth is utterly shattered, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken.

20 The earth shall stagger like a drunkard, to and fro; and be taken away like a tent. Her misdeeds shall lie so heavy upon her, that she must fall, and never rise up again.

20 The earth (AF)reels to and fro like a drunkardAnd it totters like a (m)shack,For its (AG)transgression is heavy upon it,And it will fall, (AH)never to rise again.

20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.

20 The earth staggers like a drunkard(P)and sways like a hut.Earth’s rebellion weighs it down, and it falls, never to rise again.

20 The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies so heavy upon it, that it falls, never to rise again.

21 At in that day shall the LORD muster together the high host above, and the kings of the world upon the earth.

21 So it will happen in that day,That the Lord will (AI)punish the host of (n)heaven on high,And the (AJ)kings of the earth on earth.

21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

21 On that day(Q) the Lord will punishthe host of heaven aboveand kings of the earth below.

21 "And it will come about at that time, the LORD will punish the armies of the exalted ones in the heavens, and the rulers of the earth on earth.

22 These shall be coupled together as prisoners be, and shall be shut up in one ward and punished innumerable days.

22 They will be gathered togetherLike (AK)prisoners in the (o)dungeon,And will be confined in prison; And after many days they will (AL)be punished.

22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.

22 They will be gathered togetherlike prisoners in a pit.(R)They will be confined to a dungeon;(S)after many days they will be punished.

22 They will be herded together into the Pit; they will be shut up in prison, and after many days they will be punished.

23 The Moon and the Sun shall be ashamed, when the LORD of Hosts shall reign in mount Zion and in Jerusalem with worship, and in the sight of such as shall be of his counsel.

23 Then the (AM)moon will be abashed and the sun ashamed,For the (AN)Lord of hosts will reign on (AO)Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,And His glory will be before His elders.

23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

23 The moon will be put to shameand the sun disgraced, because the Lord of Hosts will reign as kingon Mount Zion in Jerusalem, and He will display His gloryin the presence of His elders.(T)

23 Then the moon will be embarrassed and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of the Heavenly Armies will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem; and in the presence of its elders there will be glory."
