Job's Ninth Speech: A Response To Bildad

1 And Job will answer and say,

1 But Job answered and said,

1 Then Job (a)responded,

1 Then Job answered:

1 In reply, Job responded:

2 How didst thou help to him of no strength? didst thou save the arm of no strength?

2 How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength?

2 “What a help you are to (b)(A)the weak!How you have saved the arm (B)without strength!

2 How you have helped(A) the powerlessand delivered the arm that is weak!

2 "What a help you are to the weak! How powerfully you deliver those without strength!

3 How didst thou counsel to him of no wisdom? and didst thou make known help for abundance?

3 How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom? and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is?

3 “What counsel you have given to one without wisdom!What helpful insight you have abundantly (c)provided!

3 How you have counseled the unwise(B)and thoroughly explained the path to success!

3 What counsel you provide to the fool! What insight you provide so abundantly!

4 And with whom didst thou announce words? and whose breath came forth from thee?

4 To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spirit came from thee?

4 “To whom have you uttered words?And whose (d)spirit was expressed through you?

4 Who did you speak these words to?Whose breath came out of your mouth?

4 Who helped you say all of this? Who inspired you?"

God's Power Over Creation

5 The shades shall tremble from under the waters, and their inhabitants.

5 Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof.

5 “The (e)(C)departed spirits trembleUnder the waters and their inhabitants.

5 The departed spirits tremblebeneath the waters and all that inhabit them.(C)

5 "The ghosts of the dead writhe under the waters along with those who live there with them.

6 Hades is naked before him, and no covering to destruction.

6 Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering.

6 “Naked is (f)(D)Sheol before Him,And (g)(E)Abaddon has no covering.

6 Sheol(D) is naked before God,and Abaddon(E) has no covering.(F)

6 Sheol is naked before God and Abaddon has no clothes.

7 He stretched out the north upon emptiness, he hung up the earth upon nothing.

7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.

7 “He (F)stretches out the north over empty spaceAnd hangs the earth on nothing.

7 He stretches the northern skies over empty space;He hangs the earth on nothing.

7 He spreads out the north over empty space, suspending the earth over nothing.

8 He bound up the waters in his clouds, and the cloud was not rent under them.

8 He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them.

8 “He (G)wraps up the waters in His clouds,And the cloud does not burst under them.

8 He wraps up the waters in His clouds,yet the clouds do not burst beneath their weight.(G)

8 "He restricts the waters within clouds and the clouds don't burst open under them.

9 Holding fast the face of the throne, he spread his cloud upon it

9 He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it.

9 “He (h)(H)obscures the face of the (i)full moonAnd spreads His cloud over it.

9 He obscures the view of His throne,spreading His cloud over it.

9 He has enclosed the face of the full moon and spread his clouds over it.

10 He marked out with a compass the law upon the face of the waters, even till the end of light with darkness..

10 He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.

10 “He has inscribed a (I)circle on the surface of the watersAt the (J)boundary of light and darkness.

10 He laid out the horizon on the surface of the waters(H)at the boundary between light and darkness.

10 He has delimited a boundary over the surface of the oceans as a limit between light and darkness.

11 The pillars of the heavens shall be shaken, and be astonished from his reproof.

11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof.

11 “The pillars of heaven trembleAnd are amazed at His rebuke.

11 The pillars that hold up the sky tremble,astounded at His rebuke.(I)

11 The pillars of the heavens tremble and are astounded at his rebuke.

12 By his power he caused the sea to tremble; by his understanding he smote through pride.

12 He divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud.

12 “He (K)quieted the sea with His power,And by His (L)understanding He shattered (M)Rahab.

12 By His power He stirred(J) the sea,and by His understanding He crushed Rahab.(K)

12 By his power he disturbs the sea; and with his skill he shatters the sea monster.

13 By his spirit he polished the heavens; his hand pierced the flat serpent

13 By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.

13 “By His breath the (N)heavens are (j)cleared;His hand has pierced (O)the fleeing serpent.

13 By His breath the heavens gained their beauty;His hand pierced the fleeing serpent.(a)(L)

13 He clears the skies with his wind; his hands have pierced the fleeing serpent.

14 Behold these the ends of his ways; how transient a sound of the word was heard in him! and the thunder of his might who shall understand?

14 Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?

14 “Behold, these are the fringes of His ways;And how faint (P)a word we hear of Him!But His mighty (Q)thunder, who can understand?”

14 These are but the fringes of His ways;how faint is the word we hear of Him!Who can understand His mighty thunder?

14 Indeed, these are the fringes of his ways, and how faint is the whisper we've heard of it! But who can comprehend the thunder of his might?"
