Eliphaz's First Response To Job

1 ELIPHAZ THE TEMANITE REPLIED TO JOB:

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite (a)answered,

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:

1 In reply, Eliphaz from Teman answered:

2 If someone tries to talk to you, will you become impatient? But who can keep from talking?

2 If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?

2 “If one ventures a word with you, will you become impatient? But (A)who can refrain (b)from speaking?

2 Should anyone try to speak with youwhen you are exhausted?Yet who can keep from speaking?

2 "Will you get offended if somebody tries to talk to you? Who can keep from speaking at a time like this?

3 Look, you have instructed many people. When hands were weak, you made them strong.

3 Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.

3 “Behold (B)you have admonished many,And you have strengthened weak hands.

3 Indeed, you have instructed manyand have strengthened(A) weak hands.

3 Look! You've admonished many people, and you've strengthened feeble hands.

4 When someone stumbled, you lifted him up with your words. When knees were weak, you gave them strength.

4 Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.

4 “Your words have (c)helped the tottering to stand,And you have strengthened (d)feeble knees.

4 Your words have steadied the one who was stumblingand braced the knees that were buckling.(B)

4 A word from you has supported those who have stumbled, and has strengthened faltering knees.

5 But trouble comes to you, and you are impatient. It touches you, and you panic.

5 But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.

5 “But now it has come to you, and you (C)are impatient; It (D)touches you, and you are dismayed.

5 But now that this has happened to you,you have become exhausted. It strikes(C) you, and you are dismayed.

5 "But now it's your turn, and you're the one who is worn out! Now it's striking you, and you're dismayed!

6 Does your respect for God give you confidence and your lifetime of integrity give you hope?

6 Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?

6 “Is not your (e)(E)fear of God (F)your confidence,And the integrity of your ways your hope?

6 Isn’t your piety your confidence, and the integrity of your life(a) your hope?(D)

6 "Your fear of God has been your confidence, hasn't it? The integrity of your life has been your hope, hasn't it?

Only Evil People Suffer

7 Now think about this: Which innocent person ever died an untimely death? Find me a decent person who has been destroyed.

7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?

7 “Remember now, (G)who ever perished being innocent?Or where were the upright destroyed?

7 Consider: who has perished when he was innocent?Where have the honest been destroyed?(E)

7 Now please think: Who has ever perished when they're innocent? Where have the upright been destroyed?

8 When I saw those who plowed wickedness and planted misery, they gathered its harvest.

8 Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

8 “According to what I have seen, (H)those who plow iniquityAnd those who sow trouble harvest it.

8 In my experience, those who plow injusticeand those who sow trouble(F) reap the same.(G)

8 It's been my experience that those who plow the soil of iniquity and those who sow the seed of trouble will reap their harvest!

9 God destroys them with his breath and kills them with a blast of his anger.

9 By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.

9 “By (I)the breath of God they perish,And (J)by the (f)blast of His anger they come to an end.

9 They perish at a single blast(H) from Godand come to an end by the breath of His nostrils.(I)

9 They perish by the breath of God; they are consumed by the storm that is his anger.

10 The roar of the lion and the growl of the ferocious lion are loud. The young lions have had their teeth knocked out.

10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

10 “The (K)roaring of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion,And the teeth of the young lions are broken.

10 The lion may roar and the fierce lion(J) growl, but the fangs of young lions are broken.(K)

10 "The lioness may roar, and the lion cub may growl; but even the ivory teeth of the full grown lion are broken.

11 The old lions die without any prey to eat, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.

11 The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.

11 “The (L)lion perishes for lack of prey,And the (M)whelps of the lioness are scattered.

11 The strong lion dies if it catches no prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.(L)

11 Full grown lions die when they cannot find prey; that's when the lion cubs are scattered.

A Secret Was Told To Me

12 Eliphaz of Teman continued: I was told something secretly and heard something whispered in my ear.

12 Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.

12 “Now a word (N)was brought to me stealthily,And my ear received a (O)whisper of it.

12 A word was brought to me in secret;my ears caught a whisper of it.(M)

12 "A message was confided to me; my ear caught a whisper of it.

13 I am with disturbing thoughts from visions in the night, when deep sleep falls on people.

13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,

13 “Amid disquieting (P)thoughts from the visions of the night,When deep sleep falls on men,

13 Among unsettling thoughts from visions in the night,(N)when deep sleep(O) descends on men,

13 Disquieting thoughts from dreams at night; when deep sleep falls on everyone.

14 Fear and trembling came over me, and all my bones shook.

14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.

14 Dread came upon me, and trembling,And made (g)all my bones shake.

14 fear and trembling came over me(P)and made all my bones shake.

14 A fear fell upon me, along with trembling that caused all my bones to shake in terror.

15 A spirit passed in front of me. It made my hair stand on end.

15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:

15 “Then a (h)spirit passed by my face; The hair of my flesh bristled up.

15 A wind(b) passed by me,and I shuddered with fear.(c)

15 A spirit glided past me and made the hair on my skin to bristle.

16 Something stood there. I could not tell what it was. A vague image was in front of my eyes. I heard a soft voice say:

16 It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,

16 “It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance;A form was before my eyes; There was silence, then I heard a voice:

16 A figure stood there, but I could not recognize its appearance;a form loomed before my eyes.I heard a quiet voice:

16 It remained standing, but I couldn't recognize its appearance. A form appeared before my eyes; At first there was silence, and then this voice:

17 Can any mortal be righteous to God? Can any human being be pure to his maker?

17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?

17 ‘Can (Q)mankind be just (i)before God?Can a man be pure (j)before his (R)Maker?

17 “Can a person be more righteous than God,or a man more pure than his Maker?”(Q)

17 "Can a mortal person be more righteous than God? Or can the purity of the valiant exceed that of his maker?'

18 You see God does not trust his own servants. He accuses his angels of making mistakes.

18 Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:

18 (S)He puts no trust even in His servants; And against His angels He charges error.

18 If God puts no trust in His servantsand He charges His angels with foolishness,(d)(R)

18 "Indeed, since he doesn't trust his servants, since he charges his angels with error,

19 How much more will he accuse those who live in clay houses that have their foundation in the dust? Those houses can be crushed quicker than a moth!

19 How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?

19 ‘How much more those who dwell in (T)houses of clay,Whose (U)foundation is in the dust,Who are crushed before the moth!

19 how much more those who dwell in clay houses,(S)whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed like a moth!

19 how much less confidence does he have in those who dwell in houses of clay; who were formed from a foundation in dust and can perish like a moth?

20 From morning to evening, they are shattered. They will disappear forever without anyone noticing.

20 They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.

20 (V)Between morning and evening they are broken in pieces;Unobserved, they (W)perish forever.

20 They are smashed to pieces from dawn to dusk;they perish forever while no one notices.(T)

20 They are defeated between morning and evening; they perish forever and no one notices!

21 Have the ropes of their tent been loosened? Will they die without wisdom?

21 Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.

21 ‘Is not their (X)tent-cord plucked up within them? They die, yet (Y)without wisdom.’

21 Are their tent cords not pulled up?They die without wisdom.(U) >

21 Their wealth perishes with them, doesn't it? They die, and do so without having wisdom, don't they?"
