Eliphaz's Response Continues

1 Name me one else, if thou can find any: yea, look about thee upon any of the holy men.

1 “Call now, is there anyone who will answer you?And to which of the (A)holy ones will you turn?

1 Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?

1 Call out if you please. Will anyone answer you?Which of the holy ones(A) will you turn to?

1 "Cry out, won't you! Is there anyone who will answer you? To whom will you turn among the holy ones?

2 As for the foolish man, displeasure killeth him; and anger slayeth the ignorant.

2 “For (B)anger slays the foolish man,And jealousy kills the simple.

2 For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.

2 For anger kills a fool,and jealousy slays the gullible.(B)

2 For wrath will slay a fool; zealous anger will kill the naive.

3 I have seen myself, when the foolish was deep rooted, that his beauty was suddenly destroyed,

3 “I have seen the (C)foolish taking root,And I (D)cursed his abode immediately.

3 I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

3 I have seen a fool taking root,but I immediately pronounced a curse on his home.

3 "I myself saw a fool becoming established, but I suddenly cursed where he lived.

4 that his children were without prosperity or health; that they were slain in the door, and no man to deliver them;

4 “His (E)sons are far from safety,They are even (a)oppressed in the gate,And there is no deliverer.

4 His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.

4 His children are far from safety.They are crushed at the city gate,(C)with no one to rescue them.

4 His children are far from deliverance; they'll be maltreated before they leave home, with no one to rescue them.

5 that his harvest was eaten up of the hungry; that the weaponed man had spoiled it, and that the thirsty had drunk up his riches.

5 (b)His harvest the hungry devourAnd take it to a place of thorns,And the (c)(F)schemer is eager for their wealth.

5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.

5 The hungry consume his harvest,even taking it out of the thorns.(a)The thirsty(b) pant for his children’s wealth.

5 Then the hungry will devour his harvest, snatching it even from the midst of thorns, while the thirsty covet their wealth.

6 "It is not the earth that bringeth forth travail, neither cometh sorrow out of the ground;

6 “For (G)affliction does not come from the dust,Nor does trouble sprout from the ground,

6 Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

6 For distress does not grow out of the soil,and trouble does not sprout from the ground.

6 For wickedness doesn't crop up from dust, nor does trouble sprout out of the ground;

7 but it is man, that is born unto misery, like as the sparks fly up out of the hot coals.

7 For (H)man is born for trouble,As sparks fly upward.

7 Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

7 But mankind is born for trouble(D)as surely as sparks fly upward.

7 But mankind is born headed for trouble, just as sparks soar skyward."

8 But now will I speak of the LORD, and talk of God:

8 “But as for me, I would (I)seek God,And I would place my cause before God;

8 I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:

8 However, if I were you, I would appeal to Godand would present my case to Him.(E)

8 "Now as for me, I would seek God if I were you; I would commit my case to God.

9 which doeth things, that are unsearchable, and marvelous without number.

9 Who (J)does great and unsearchable things,(d)Wonders without number.

9 Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:

9 He does great(F) and unsearchable things,wonders without number.(G)

9 He is always doing great things that cannot be explained, countless awesome deeds.

10 Which giveth rain upon the earth, and poureth water upon all things;

10 “He (K)gives rain on the earthAnd sends water on the fields,

10 Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:

10 He gives rain to the earthand sends water to the fields.(H)

10 He sends rain on the surface of the earth, and waters the surface of the open country.

11 which setteth up them of low degree, and sendeth prosperity to those that are in heaviness;

11 So that (L)He sets on high those who are lowly,And those who mourn are lifted to safety.

11 To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.

11 He sets the lowly on high,and mourners are lifted to safety.(I)

11 He sets the lowly on high, and lifts those who mourn to safety.

12 Which destroyeth the devices of the subtle, so that they are not able to perform the things that they take in hand;

12 “He (M)frustrates the plotting of the shrewd,So that their hands cannot attain success.

12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

12 He frustrates the schemes of the craftyso that they(c) achieve no success.

12 He frustrates the plans of the crafty; so that what they work for never succeeds.

13 which compasseth the wise in their own craftiness, and overthroweth the counsel of the wicked.

13 “He (N)captures the wise by their own shrewdness,And the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted.

13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

13 He traps the wise in their craftinessso that the plans of the deceptiveare quickly brought to an end.(J)

13 He captures the wise in their own craftiness, bringing a quick end to their cunning advice.

14 Insomuch that they run into darkness by fair day, and grope about them at the noonday, like as in the night.

14 “By day they (O)meet with darkness,And grope at noon as in the night.

14 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

14 They encounter darkness by day,and they grope at noonas if it were night.(K)

14 They meet with darkness in broad daylight; at noonday they grope around as if it were night.

15 And so he delivereth the poor from the sword, from the threatenings of the ungodly, and from the hand of the cruel;

15 “But He saves from (P)the sword of their mouth,And (Q)the poor from the hand of the mighty.

15 But he saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

15 He saves the needy from their sharp words(d)(L)and from the clutches of the powerful.

15 So he delivers from the sword of their mouth the poor from the power of the mighty.

16 that the poor may have hope, and that the mouth of the oppressor may be stopped.

16 “So the helpless has hope,And (R)unrighteousness must shut its mouth.

16 So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

16 So the poor have hope,and injustice shuts its mouth.(M)

16 Therefore there is hope for those who are poor, and iniquity shuts its mouth.

Blessing Comes When God Corrects You

17 "Behold, happy is the man whom God punisheth: therefore, despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty.

17 “Behold, how (S)happy is the man whom God reproves,So do not despise the (T)discipline of (e)the Almighty.

17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

17 See how happy the man is God corrects;so do not reject the discipline of the Almighty.

17 "Indeed, how blessed is the person whom God reproves! So never disrespect the discipline of the Almighty,

18 For though he make a wound, he giveth a medicine again: though he smite, his hand maketh whole again.

18 “For (U)He inflicts pain, and (f)gives relief;He wounds, and His hands also heal.

18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

18 For He crushes but also binds up;He strikes, but His hands also heal.(N)

18 because though he wounds, but then applies bandages; though he strikes, his hands still heal.

19 He delivereth thee out of six troubles, so that in the seventh there can no harm touch thee.

19 (g)From six troubles (V)He will deliver you,Even in seven (W)evil will not touch you.

19 He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

19 He will rescue you from six calamities;no harm will touch you in seven.

19 "He will deliver you through six calamities; and calamity won't touch you throughout the seventh.

20 In the midst of hunger he saveth thee from death: and when it is war, from the power of the sword.

20 “In (X)famine He will redeem you from death,And (Y)in war from the power of the sword.

20 In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.

20 In famine He will redeem you from death,and in battle, from the power of the sword.(O)

20 He will deliver you from death by famine; in war from the power of the sword.

21 He shall keep thee from the perilous tongue so that when trouble cometh, thou shalt not need to fear.

21 “You will be (Z)hidden from the scourge of the tongue,(AA)And you will not be afraid of violence when it comes.

21 Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

21 You will be safe from slander(e)and not fear destruction when it comes.(P)

21 You'll be protected from the accusing tongue; you need not fear destruction when it heads your way.

22 In destruction and dearth thou shalt be merry, and shalt not be afraid for the beasts of the earth:

22 “You will (AB)laugh at violence and famine,(AC)And you will not be afraid of (h)wild beasts.

22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

22 You will laugh at destruction and hungerand not fear the animals of the earth.

22 You'll laugh at destruction and famine; and you need not fear the beasts of the earth.

23 But the castles in the land shall be confederate with thee, and the beasts of the field shall give thee peace.

23 “For you will be in league with the stones of the field,And (AD)the beasts of the field will be at peace with you.

23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

23 For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field,and the wild animals will be at peace with you.(Q)

23 For you'll have a pact with the stones in the field; and the beasts of the field will be at peace with you.

24 Yea, thou shalt know that thy dwelling place shall be in rest: thou shalt behold thy substance, and be no more punished for sin.

24 “You will know that your (AE)tent is secure,For you will visit your abode and fear no loss.

24 And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.

24 You will know that your tent is secure,(R)and nothing will be missing when you inspect your home.

24 You'll know that your home is secure; when you search your possessions, and nothing will be missing.

25 Thou shalt see also, that thy seed shall increase, and that thy posterity shall be as the grass upon the earth.

25 “You will know also that your (i)(AF)descendants will be many,And (AG)your offspring as the grass of the earth.

25 Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

25 You will also know that your offspring will be manyand your descendants like the grass of the earth.

25 You'll know that you'll have many children; and that your offspring will be like the grass of the earth.

26 Thou shalt come to thy grave in a fair age, like as the corn sheaves are brought in to the barn in due season.

26 “You will (AH)come to the grave in full vigor,Like the stacking of grain in its season.

26 Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season.

26 You will approach the grave(S) in full vigor,(T)as a stack of sheaves is gathered in its season.

26 You'll go to your grave at a ripe old age; like a stack of grain that's harvested at just the right time.

27 Lo, this we ourselves have proved by experience, and even this it is. Hearken thou to it also, that thou mayest take heed to thyself."

27 “Behold this; we have investigated it, and so it is.Hear it, and know for yourself.”

27 Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

27 We have investigated this, and it is true!Hear it and understand it for yourself.

27 "Look! We have thought all this through, and what we've said is true; So please listen and learn for your own good!"
