A Paralytic Is Healed

1 After these was the festival of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

1 After these things there was (A)a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

1 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

1 After this, a Jewish festival took place, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.(A)

1 Later on, there was another festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2 And there is in Jerusalem, at the sheep place a pool, in Hebrew called Bethesda, having five porches.

2 Now there is in Jerusalem by (B)the sheep gate a pool, which is called (C)in (a)Hebrew (b)Bethesda, having five porticoes.

2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

2 By the Sheep Gate(B) in Jerusalem there is a pool, called Bethesda(a) in Hebrew, which has five colonnades.(b)

2 Near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem is a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew. It has five colonnades,

3 In these lay a great multitude of weak, blind, lame, withered, expecting the moving of the water.

3 In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [(c)waiting for the moving of the waters;

3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

3 Within these lay a large number of the sick—blind, lame, and paralyzed [—waiting for the moving of the water,

3 and under these a large number of sick people were lying blind, lame, or paralyzed waiting for the movement of the water.

4 For a messenger at a time went down into the pool, and troubled the water: then he having first stepped in after the troubling of the water became healthy, by whatever malady a long while since he was laid.

4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.]

4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

4 because an angel would go down into the pool from time to time and stir up the water. Then the first one who got in after the water was stirred up recovered from whatever ailment he had].(c)

4 At certain times an angel of the Lord would go down into the pool and stir up the water, and whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had.

5 And a certain man was there, being in weakness thirty-eight years.

5 A man was there who had been (d)ill for thirty-eight years.

5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

5 One man was there who had been sick for 38 years.

5 One particular man was there who had been ill for 38 years.

6 Jesus having seen the same lying down, and having known that it was already much time, says to him, Wilt thou be well?

6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He *said to him, “Do you wish to get well?”

6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had already been there a long time,(C) He said to him, “Do you want to get well?”

6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?"

7 He being sick answered him, Lord, I have no man, that, when the water was troubled, he might cast me into the pool: and in which I am coming, another steps down before me.

7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when (D)the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”

7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

7 “Sir,”(D) the sick man answered, “I don’t have a man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, someone goes down ahead of me.”

7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I don't have anyone to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up. While I'm trying to get there, someone else steps down ahead of me."

8 Jesus says to him, Arise, take up thy couch, and walk.

8 Jesus *said to him, (E)Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.”

8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

8 “Get up,” Jesus told him, “pick up your mat and walk!”

8 Jesus told him, "Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!"

9 And quickly the man was well, and he took up his couch, and walked: and the sabbath was in that day.

9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.(F)Now it was the Sabbath on that day.

9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

9 Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk. Now that day was the Sabbath,(E)

9 The man immediately became well, and he picked up his mat and started walking. Now that day was a Sabbath.

10 Then said the Jews to him healed, It is the sabbath: it is not lawful for thee to take up thy couch.

10 So (G)the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, “It is the Sabbath, and (H)it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.”

10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

10 so the Jews(F) said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Sabbath!(G) It’s illegal for you to pick up your mat.”

10 So the Jewish leaders told the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.

11 He answered them, He having made me well, the same said to me, Lift up thy couch, and walk.

11 But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’

11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

11 He replied, “The man who made me well(H) told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’

11 But he answered them, "The man who made me well told me, "Pick up your mat and walk.'"

12 Then they asked him, Who is the man having said to thee, Lift up thy couch, and walk?

12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk’?”

12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

12 “Who is this man who told you, ‘Pick up your mat and walk’?” they asked.

12 They asked him, "Who is the man who told you, "Pick it up and walk'?"

13 And he healed knew not who he is: for Jesus escaped, a crowd being in the place.

13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place.

13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

13 But the man who was cured did not know who it was,(I) because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.(d)

13 But the one who had been healed did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away from the crowd in that place.

Equal With God

14 After these, Jesus finds him in the temple, and he said to him, Behold, thou hest become well: sin no more, lest something worse be to thee.

14 Afterward Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not (I)sin anymore, (J)so that nothing worse happens to you.”

14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

14 After this, Jesus found him in the temple complex(J) and said to him, “See, you are well. Do not sin anymore, so that something worse doesn’t happen to you.”

14 Later on, Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, "Look! You have become well. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you."

15 The man departed, and announced to the Jews that it is Jesus having made him well.

15 The man went away, and told (K)the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

15 The man went and reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.(K)

15 The man went off and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.

Honoring The Father And The Son

16 And therefore the Jews drove out Jesus, and sought to kill him, because he did these in the sabbath.

16 For this reason (L)the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.

16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

16 Therefore, the Jews began persecuting(L) Jesus(e) because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.(M)

16 So the Jewish leaders began persecuting Jesus, because he kept doing such things on the Sabbath.

17 And Jesus answered, My Father works till now, and I work.

17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”

17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

17 But Jesus responded to them, “My Father(N) is still working, and I am working also.”

17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I, too, am working."

Jesus Is Equal With God

18 For this therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, for not only did he loose the sabbath, but also he called God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

18 For this reason therefore (M)the Jews (N)were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, (O)making Himself equal with God.

18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

18 This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill Him:(O) Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

18 So the Jewish leaders were trying all the harder to kill him, because he was not only breaking the Sabbath but was also calling God his own Father, thereby making himself equal to God.

The Authority Of The Son

19 Then answered Jesus and said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, The Son can of himself do nothing, except what he sees the Father doing: for whatever he should do, also these does the Son likewise.

19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (P)the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever (e)the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

19 Then Jesus replied, “I assure you: The Son is not able to do anything on His own, but only what He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father(f) does, the Son also does these things in the same way.(P)

19 Jesus told them, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the Son can do nothing on his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing, What the Father does, the Son does likewise.

20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all which himself does: and he will show him greater than these, that ye might wonder.

20 (Q)For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him (R)greater works than these, so that you will marvel.

20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

20 For the Father loves the Son and shows Him everything He is doing, and He will show Him greater works(Q) than these so that you will be amazed.

20 The Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing, and he will show him even greater actions than these, so that you may be amazed.

21 For as the Father arouses the dead, and makes alive; so also the Son makes alive whom he will.

21 For just as the Father raises the dead and (S)gives them life, even so (T)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.

21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

21 And just as the Father raises(R) the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to anyone He wants to.(S)

21 Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to those he chooses.

22 For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son:

22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but (U)He has given all judgment to the Son,

22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

22 The Father,(T) in fact, judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son,

22 The Father judges no one, but has given all authority to judge to the Son,

23 That all should honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He honouring not the Son, honours not the Father having sent him.

23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. (V)He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

23 so that all people will honor the Son just as they honor the Father.(U) Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.(V)

23 so that everyone may honor the Son as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

Life And Judgment

24 Truly, truly, I say to you, That he hearing my word, and believing him having sent me, has eternal life, and comes not into judgment; but has passed from death to life.

24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and (W)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and (X)does not come into judgment, but has (Y)passed out of death into life.

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

24 “I assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life(W) and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.

24 "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, whoever hears what I say and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged, but has passed from death to life.

25 Truly, truly, I say to you, That the hour comes, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they hearing shall live.

25 Truly, truly, I say to you, (Z)an hour is coming and now is, when (AA)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who (AB)hear will live.

25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

25 “I assure you: An hour is coming, and is now here,(X) when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.(Y)

25 Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the time approaches, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live.

26 For as the Father has life in himself, so also gave he to the Son to have life in himself;

26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He (AC)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;

26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted to the Son(Z) to have life in Himself.

26 Just as the Father has life in himself, so also he has granted the Son to have life in himself,

27 And gave him authority also to do judgment, because he is the Son of man.

27 and He gave Him authority to (AD)execute judgment, because He is (f)the Son of Man.

27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

27 And He has granted Him the right to pass judgment,(AA) because He is the Son of Man.(AB)

27 and he has given him authority to judge, because he is the Son of Man.

28 Wonder not at this: for the hour comes, in which all they in the tombs shall hear his voice, and shall go forth;

28 Do not marvel at this; for (AE)an hour is coming, in which (AF)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,

28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

28 Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice

28 Don't be amazed at this, because the time is approaching when everyone in their graves will hear the Son of Man's voice

29 They having done good, to rising up of life; and they having done bad, to rising up of judgment.

29 and will come forth; (AG)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

29 and come out—those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of judgment.

29 and will come out those who have done what is good to the resurrection that leads to life, and those who have practiced what is evil to the resurrection that ends in condemnation.

Witnesses To Jesus

30 I can do nothing of myself: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; for I seek not my will, but the will of the Father having sent me.

30 (AH)I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and (AI)My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but (AJ)the will of Him who sent Me.

30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

30 “I can do nothing on My own. I judge only as I hear, and My judgment(AC) is righteous,(AD) because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.(AE)

30 I can do nothing on my own accord. I judge according to what I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me."

Further Testimony About The Son

31 If I testify of myself, my testimony is not true.

31 (AK)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not (g)true.

31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

31 “If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid.(g)

31 "If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is not trustworthy.

32 Another is testifying of me, and I know that the testimony which he testifies of me is true.

32 There is (AL)another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.

32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

32 There is Another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony He gives about Me is valid.(h)(AF)

32 There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony he gives about me is true.

33 Ye have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.

33 You have sent to John, and he (AM)has testified to the truth.

33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

33 You have sent messengers to John, and he has testified to the truth.(AG)

33 You have sent messengers to John, and he has testified to the truth.

34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these I say that ye might be saved.

34 But (AN)the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved.

34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

34 I don’t receive man’s testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved.

34 I myself do not accept human testimony, but I am saying these things so that you may be saved.

35 He was a burning and manifest light: and ye wished to rejoice for a time in his light.

35 He was (AO)the lamp that was burning and was shining and you (AP)were willing to rejoice for (h)a while in his light.

35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

35 John(i)(AH) was a burning and shining lamp,(AI) and for a time you were willing to enjoy his light.(AJ)

35 That man John was a lamp that burns and brightly shines, and for a while you were willing to rejoice in his light.

36 And I have greater testimony than of John: for the works that the Father gave me that I might finish them, the same works that I do, testify of me, that the Father has sent me.

36 But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for (AQ)the works which the Father has given Me (AR)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father (AS)has sent Me.

36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

36 “But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish.(AK) These very works I am doing testify about Me that the Father has sent(AL) Me.

36 "But I have a greater testimony than John's, because the actions that the Father has given me to complete the very actions that I am doing testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me.

37 And the Father having sent me, he has testified of me. Nor have ye at any time heard his voice, or seen his form.

37 And the Father who sent Me, (AT)He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form.

37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

37 The Father who sent Me has Himself testified(AM) about Me. You have not heard His voice at any time, and you haven’t seen His form.(AN)

37 Moreover, the Father who sent me has himself testified on my behalf. You have never heard his voice or seen what he looks like,

38 And his word ye have not remaining in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not.

38 You do not have (AU)His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He (AV)sent.

38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

38 You don’t have His word living in you, because you don’t believe the One He sent.

38 nor do you have his word at work in you, because you do not believe in the one whom he sent.

39 Search the writings; for ye think in them to have eternal life: and these are they testifying of me.

39 (i)(AW)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is (AX)these that testify about Me;

39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

39 You pore over(j) the Scriptures(AO) because you think you have eternal life in them, yet they testify about Me.(AP)

39 You examine the Scriptures carefully because you suppose that in them you have eternal life. Yet they testify about me.

40 And ye wish not to come to me, that ye might have life.

40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.

40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

40 And you are not willing(AQ) to come to Me(AR) so that you may have life.

40 But you are not willing to come to me to have life.

41 I receive not glory from man.

41 (AY)I do not receive glory from men;

41 I receive not honour from men.

41 “I do not accept glory(AS) from men,

41 "I do not accept human praise.

42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.

42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

42 but I know you—that you have no love for God(AT) within you.

42 I know that you do not have the love of God in you.

43 I have come in the name of my Father, and ye receive me not: if another should come in his own name, him will ye receive.

43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; (AZ)if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.

43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

43 I have come in My Father’s name,(AU) yet you don’t accept Me.(AV) If someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.

43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me. Yet if another man comes in his own name, you will accept him.

44 How can ye believe, receiving glory from one another, and ye seek not the glory that from God alone?

44 How can you believe, when you (BA)receive (j)glory from one another and you do not seek (BB)the (k)glory that is from (BC)the one and only God?

44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

44 How can you believe? While accepting glory from one another, you don’t seek the glory that comes from the only(AW) God.(AX)

44 How can you believe when you accept each other's praise and do not look for the praise that comes from the only God?

45 Think not that I shall accuse you to the Father: he accusing you is Moses, in whom ye have hoped.

45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is (BD)Moses, in whom you have set your hope.

45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(AY) on whom you have set your hope.

45 Do not suppose that I will be the one to accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope,

46 For if ye had believed Moses, ye had believed me: for he himself wrote of me.

46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for (BE)he wrote about Me.

46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.

46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me.

46 because if you believed Moses, you would believe me, since he wrote about me.

47 And if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

47 But (BF)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

47 But if you don’t believe his writings,(AZ) how will you believe My words?”(BA)

47 But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe my words?"
