Gideon Pursues Zebah And Zalmunna

11 Then the men of Ephraim said to him, "What is this thing you have done to us, not calling us when you went to fight against Midian?" And they contended with him vigorously.

11 And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

11 The men of Ephraim said to him, "Why have you done this to us, not calling us when you went to fight against the Midianites?" And they argued with him violently.

11 Later on, the descendants of Ephraim spoke to Gideon. They argued vehemently, "What are you doing to us? You never called us! But you went out to fight Midian!"

11 And the men of Ephraim said to Gideon, Why have you treated us like this, not calling us when you went to fight with Midian? And they quarreled with him furiously.

22 But he said to them, "What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

22 And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

22 So he said to them, "What have I done now compared to you? Is not the gleaning of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

22 "What have I accomplished compared to you?" he responded. "Isn't what's left from Ephraim's harvest better than the best vintage of Abiezer?

22 And he said to them, What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of [your big tribe of] Ephraim better than the vintage of [my little clan of] Abiezer?

33 "God has given the leaders of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb into your hands; and what was I able to do in comparison with you?" Then their anger toward him subsided when he said that.

33 God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

33 God handed over to you Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of Midian. What was I able to do compared to you?" When he said this, their anger against him subsided.

33 God gave Oreb and Zeeb, the leaders of Midian, into your control. What was I able to do compared to you?" When he said this, their anger calmed down.

33 God has given into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger toward him was abated when he had said that.

Gideon Pursues The Kings Of Midian

44 Then Gideon and the 300 men who were with him came to the Jordan and crossed over, weary yet pursuing.

44 And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

44 Gideon and the 300 men came to the Jordan and crossed it. They were exhausted, but still in pursuit.

44 Meanwhile, Gideon and the 300 soldiers with him came to the Jordan, exhausted but continuing their pursuit.

44 And Gideon came to the Jordan and passed over, he and the 300 men with him, faint yet pursuing.

55 He said to the men of Succoth, "Please give loaves of bread to the people who are following me, for they are weary, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian."

55 And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

55 He said to the men of Succoth, "Please give some loaves of bread to the people who are following me, because they are exhausted, for I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian."

55 He told the men of Succoth, "Please give loaves of bread to the soldiers who are following behind me. They're tired, and I'm pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian."

55 And he said to the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread to the people who follow me, for they are faint, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

66 The leaders of Succoth said, "Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hands, that we should give bread to your army?"

66 And the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

66 But the princes of Succoth asked, "Are Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hands that we should give bread to your army?"

66 But the officials of Succoth replied, "Do you have Zebah and Zalmunna in custody already, so that we should give food to your army?"

66 And the princes of Succoth said, Are Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?

77 Gideon said, "All right, when the LORD has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will thrash your bodies with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers."

77 And Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

77 Gideon replied, "Very well, when the Lord has handed Zebah and Zalmunna over to me, I will trample your flesh on thorns and briers from the wilderness!"

77 So Gideon responded, "Okay then, but when the LORD has turned over Zebah and Zalmunna into my control, I'm going to whip you with thorns and briers from the desert!"

77 And Gideon said, For that, when the Lord has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will thresh your flesh with the thorns and briers of the wilderness!

88 He went up from there to Penuel and spoke similarly to them; and the men of Penuel answered him just as the men of Succoth had answered.

88 And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

88 He went from there to Penuel and asked the same thing from them. The men of Penuel answered just as the men of Succoth had answered.

88 Then he left there to go to Penuel and asked the same thing from them, but the men of Penuel responded the same way the men of Succoth did.

88 And he went from there up to Penuel and made the same request, and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had done.

99 So he spoke also to the men of Penuel, saying, "When I return safely, I will tear down this tower."

99 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

99 He also told the men of Penuel, "When I return in peace, I will tear down this tower!"

99 So he responded the same way to the men of Penuel, "When I come back safely, I'm going to tear down this tower."

99 And [Gideon] said to the men of Penuel, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

1010 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their armies with them, about 15,000 men, all who were left of the entire army of the sons of the east; for the fallen were 120,000 swordsmen.

1010 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

1010 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and with them was their army of about 15,000 men, who were all those left of the entire army of the Qedemites. Those who had been killed were 120,000 warriors.

1010 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, along with their armies, about 15,000 men who survived from the entire army of the group from the east, since 120,000 swordsmen had already fallen.

1010 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army -- "about 15,000 men, all who were left of all the army of the sons of the east, for there had fallen 120,000 men who drew the sword.

1111 Gideon went up by the way of those who lived in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and attacked the camp when the camp was unsuspecting.

1111 And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.

1111 Gideon traveled on the caravan route, east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and attacked their army while the army was unsuspecting.

1111 Gideon went up by a caravan route east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked their encampment when they were off guard.

1111 And Gideon went up by the route of those who dwelt in tents east of Nobah and Jogbehah and smote their camp [unexpectedly], for the army thought itself secure.

1212 When Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued them and captured the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and routed the whole army.

1212 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

1212 Zebah and Zalmunna fled, and he pursued them. He captured these two kings of Midian and routed the entire army.

1212 When Zebah and Zalmunna escaped, he pursued them, captured those two kings of Midian, and threw the entire army into a panic.

1212 And Zebah and Zalmunna fled, and he pursued them and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and terrified all the army.

1313 Then Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle by the ascent of Heres.

1313 And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,

1313 Gideon son of Joash returned from the battle by the ascent of Heres.

1313 Then Joash's son Gideon returned from the battle along the Heres Ascent.

1313 Then Gideon son of Joash returned from the battle by the ascent of Heres.

1414 And he captured a youth from Succoth and questioned him. Then the youth wrote down for him the princes of Succoth and its elders, seventy-seven men.

1414 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.

1414 He captured a youth from the men of Succoth and interrogated him. The youth wrote down for him the [names of the] 77 princes and elders of Succoth.

1414 He caught a young man from Succoth and interrogated him. He wrote out for Gideon a list of the 77 officials of Succoth, including its elders.

1414 And he caught a young man of Succoth and inquired of him, and [the youth] wrote down for him [the names of] the officials of Succoth and its elders, seventy-seven men.

Gideon Punishes Succoth

1515 He came to the men of Succoth and said, "Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom you taunted me, saying, 'Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are weary?'"

1515 And he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

1515 Then he went to the men of Succoth and said, "Here are Zebah and Zalmunna. You taunted me about them, saying, 'Are Zebah and Zalmunna now in your power that we should give bread to your exhausted men?' "

1515 Then Gideon approached the men of Succoth and announced, "Here are Zebah and Zalmunna. You criticized me about them when you said, "Do you have Zebah and Zalmunna in custody already, so that we should give food to your weary army?'"

1515 And he came to the men of Succoth and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you scoffed at me, saying, Are Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are faint?

1616 He took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and he disciplined the men of Succoth with them.

1616 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

1616 So he took the elders of the city, as well as some thorns and briers from the wilderness, and he disciplined the men of Succoth with them.

1616 So he took the elders of the city and disciplined the men of Succoth with thorns and briers from the desert.

1616 And he took the elders of the city and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth [a lesson].

1717 He tore down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.

1717 And he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

1717 He also tore down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.

1717 He also demolished the tower in Penuel and killed the men of the city.

1717 And he broke down the tower of Penuel and slew the men of the city.

1818 Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, "What kind of men were they whom you killed at Tabor?" And they said, "They were like you, each one resembling the son of a king."

1818 Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

1818 He asked Zebah and Zalmunna, "What kind of men did you kill at Tabor?" "They were like you," they said. "Each resembled the son of a king."

1818 Afterwards, he asked Zebah and Zalmunna, "What were the men like whom you killed at Tabor?" They answered, "Like you, each one like the son of a king""

1818 Then [Gideon] said to Zebah and Zalmunna, What kind of men were they whom you slew at Tabor? And they replied, They were like you, each of them resembled the son of a king.

1919 He said, "They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As the LORD lives, if only you had let them live, I would not kill you."

1919 And he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the LORD liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

1919 So he said, "They were my brothers, the sons of my mother! As the Lord lives, if you had let them live, I would not kill you."

1919 Gideon replied, "They were my brothers sons from my own mother. As the LORD lives, if you had let them live, I wouldn't be killing you."

1919 And he said, They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As the Lord lives, if you had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

2020 So he said to Jether his firstborn, "Rise, kill them." But the youth did not draw his sword, for he was afraid, because he was still a youth.

2020 And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

2020 Then he said to Jether, his firstborn, "Get up and kill them." The youth did not draw his sword, because he was afraid, for he was still a youth.

2020 Then he told his firstborn son Jether, "Get up and kill them!" But he was afraid, since he was still only a youngster.

2020 And [Gideon] said to Jether his firstborn [to embarrass them], Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword, for he feared because he was yet a lad.

2121 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, "Rise up yourself, and fall on us; for as the man, so is his strength." So Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments which were on their camels' necks.

2121 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels' necks.

2121 Zebah and Zalmunna said, "Get up and kill us yourself, for a man is judged by his strength." So Gideon got up, killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.

2121 Then Zebah and Zalmunna responded, "Get up and attack us yourself, since a man's valor is only as good as the man himself." So Gideon got up, killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the crescent-shaped necklaces that adorned the necks of their camels.

2121 Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise yourself and fall on us; for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose and slew Zebah and Zalmunna and took the [crescent-shaped] ornaments that were on their camels' necks.

Gideon's Legacy

2222 Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, "Rule over us, both you and your son, also your son's son, for you have delivered us from the hand of Midian."

2222 Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

2222 Then the Israelites said to Gideon, "Rule over us, you as well as your sons and your grandsons, for you delivered us from the power of Midian."

2222 Then the men of Israel asked Gideon, "Rule over us you, your son, and your grandsons because you have delivered us from Midian's domination."

2222 Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, Rule over us -- "you and your son and your son's son also -- "for you have delivered us from the hand of Midian.

2323 But Gideon said to them, "I will not rule over you, nor shall my son rule over you; the LORD shall rule over you."

2323 And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.

2323 But Gideon said to them, "I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the Lord will rule over you."

2323 But Gideon told them, "I won't rule over you and my son won't rule over you. The LORD will rule you."

2323 And Gideon said to them, I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the Lord will rule over you.

2424 Yet Gideon said to them, "I would request of you, that each of you give me an earring from his spoil." (For they had gold earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

2424 And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

2424 Then he said to them, "Let me make a request of you: Everyone give me an earring from his plunder." Now the enemy had gold earrings because they were Ishmaelites.

2424 But Gideon also added, "I would like to ask that each of you give me a ring from his war booty" because, as Ishmaelites, the Midianites had been wearing gold rings.

2424 And Gideon said to them, Let me make a request of you -- "every man of you give me the earrings of his spoil. For [the Midianites] had gold earrings because they were Ishmaelites [general term for all descendants of Keturah].

2525 They said, "We will surely give them." So they spread out a garment, and every one of them threw an earring there from his spoil.

2525 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.

2525 They said, "We agree to give them." So they spread out a mantle, and everyone threw an earring from his plunder on it.

2525 They responded, "We'll be happy to give them." So they laid out a garment, and each of them contributed a ring from his war booty.

2525 And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and every man cast on it the earrings of his spoil.

2626 The weight of the gold earrings that he requested was 1,700 shekels of gold, besides the crescent ornaments and the pendants and the purple robes which were on the kings of Midian, and besides the neck bands that were on their camels' necks.

2626 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks.

2626 The weight of the gold earrings he requested was about 43 pounds of gold, in addition to the crescent ornaments and ear pendants, the purple garments on the kings of Midian, and the chains on the necks of their camels.

2626 The weight of the rings that he had asked for was 1,700 gold coins, not counting the crescent-shaped necklaces, pendants, and purple garments worn by the Midian kings, and also not counting the bands adorning the necks of their camels.

2626 And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was 1,700 shekels of gold, besides the crescents and pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and the chains that were about their camels' necks.

2727 Gideon made it into an ephod, and placed it in his city, Ophrah, and all Israel played the harlot with it there, so that it became a snare to Gideon and his household.

2727 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

2727 Gideon made an ephod from all this and put it in Ophrah, his hometown. Then all Israel prostituted themselves with it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his household.

2727 Gideon crafted the booty into an ephod and enshrined it in his home town of Ophrah. Then all of Israel committed spiritual adultery with it there, and it became a snare for Gideon and his household.

2727 And Gideon made an ephod [a sacred, high priest's garment] of it, and put it in his city of Ophrah, and all Israel paid homage to it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his family.

Gideon's Story Ends

2828 So Midian was subdued before the sons of Israel, and they did not lift up their heads anymore. And the land was undisturbed for forty years in the days of Gideon.

2828 Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

2828 So Midian was subdued before the Israelites, and they were no longer a threat. The land was peaceful 40 years during the days of Gideon.

2828 Midian remained subjugated to the Israelis, and they didn't so much as raise their heads anymore, so the land was peaceful for 40 years during the lifetime of Gideon.

2828 Thus was Midian subdued before the Israelites so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the land had peace and rest for forty years in the days of Gideon.

The Death Of Gideon

2929 Then Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house.

2929 And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

2929 Jerubbaal [(that is, Gideon)] son of Joash went back to live at his house.

2929 Afterwards, Joash's son Jerubbaal went home and retired.

2929 Jerubbaal (Gideon) son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

3030 Now Gideon had seventy sons who were his direct descendants, for he had many wives.

3030 And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

3030 Gideon had 70 sons, his own offspring, since he had many wives.

3030 Gideon raised 70 sons as his direct descendants, since he had many wives.

3030 Now Gideon had seventy sons born to him, for he had many wives.

3131 His concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.

3131 And his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

3131 His concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.

3131 His mistress in Shechem bore him a son whom he named Abimelech.

3131 And his concubine, who was in Shechem, also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelech.

3232 And Gideon the son of Joash died at a ripe old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

3232 And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

3232 Then Gideon son of Joash died at a ripe old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

3232 Later, Joash's son Gideon died at a ripe old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash at Ophrah, which belonged to the descendants of Abiezer.

3232 Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Israel Returns To Baal-Worship

3333 Then it came about, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the sons of Israel again played the harlot with the Baals, and made Baal-berith their god.

3333 And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baalberith their god.

3333 When Gideon died, the Israelites turned and prostituted themselves with the Baals and made Baal-berith their god.

3333 Later on, as soon as Gideon was dead, the Israelis again committed spiritual adultery with various Canaanite deities and appointed Baal-berith to be their god.

3333 As soon as Gideon was dead, the Israelites turned again and played the harlot after the Baals and made Baal-berith their god.

3434 Thus the sons of Israel did not remember the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side;

3434 And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

3434 The Israelites did not remember the Lord their God who had delivered them from the power of the enemies around them.

3434 The Israelis did not remember the LORD their God, who continually delivered them from the domination of their enemies who surrounded them on every side.

3434 And the Israelites did not remember the Lord their God, Who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side;

3535 nor did they show kindness to the household of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) in accord with all the good that he had done to Israel.

3535 Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

3535 They did not show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal ([that is,] Gideon) for all the good he had done for Israel.

3535 And they showed no gracious love to the household of Jerubbaal also known as Gideon despite all the good that he had done for Israel.

3535 Neither did they show kindness to the family of Jerubbaal, that is, Gideon, in return for all the good which he had done for Israel.
