The Preface To Luke's Gospel
1 Many have undertaken to compile a narrative about the events that have been fulfilled(a) among us,(A)
1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
1 Since many people have attempted to write an orderly account of the events that have transpired among us,
1 Since [as is well known] many have undertaken to compile an orderly account of the things which have been fulfilled among us [by God],
2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
2 just as they were handed down to us by those who (B)from the beginning (b)were (C)eyewitnesses and (c)(D)servants of (E)the (d)word,
2 just as they were passed down to us by those who had been eyewitnesses and servants of the word from the beginning,
2 exactly as they were handed down to us by those [with personal experience] who from the beginning [of Christ’s ministry] were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word [that is, of the teaching concerning salvation through faith in Christ],
3 It also seemed good to me, since I have carefully investigated everything from the very first, to write to you in an orderly sequence, most honorable(D) Theophilus,(E)
3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
3 it seemed fitting for me as well, (F)having (e)investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you (G)in consecutive order, (H)most excellent (I)Theophilus;
3 I, too, have carefully investigated everything from the beginning and have decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,

6 Both were righteous in God’s sight,(I) living without blame(J) according to all the commands and requirements of the Lord.
6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

6 Both of them were righteous before God, having lived blamelessly according to all of the commandments and regulations of the Lord.
6 They both were righteous (approved) in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.
7 But they had no children(d) because Elizabeth could not conceive,(e) and both of them were well along in years.(f)
7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
7 They had no children because Elizabeth was barren and because both of them were getting old.
7 But they were childless, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both far advanced in years.
8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
8 Now it happened that while (O)he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division,
8 When Zechariah was serving with his division of priests in God's presence,
8 Now it happened while Zacharias was serving as priest before God in the appointed order of his priestly division,
9 it happened that he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense.(L)
9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

10 And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer (Q)outside at the hour of the incense offering.
10 And the entire congregation of people was praying outside at the time when the incense was burned.
10 And all the congregation was praying outside [in the court of the temple] at the hour of the incense offering.
13 But the angel said to him:Do not be afraid,(N) Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard.Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son,and you will name him John.(O)
13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
13 But the angel said to him, “(T)Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and (U)you will (l)give him the name John.
13 But the angel told him, "Stop being afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to name him John.
14 There will be joy and delight for you,and many will rejoice at his birth.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
14 You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.
14 You will have great joy, and many people will rejoice at his birth,
14 You will have great joy and delight, and many will rejoice over his birth,
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lordand will never drink wine or beer.(P)He will be filled with the Holy Spiritwhile still in his mother’s womb.(Q)
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will (V)drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit (m)while yet in his mother’s womb.
15 because he will be great in the Lord's presence. He will never drink wine or any strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.
16 He will turn many of the sons of Israelto the Lord their God.
16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
16 He will bring many of Israel's descendants back to the Lord their God.
16 He will turn many of the sons of Israel back [from sin] to [love and serve] the Lord their God.
17 And he will go before Himin the spirit and power of Elijah,to turn the hearts of fathersto their children,(R)and the disobedientto the understanding of the righteous,to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.(S)
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
17 It is he who will (X)go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of (Y)Elijah, (Z)to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to (AA)make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

17 It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous [which is to seek and submit to the will of God]—in order to make ready a people [perfectly] prepared [spiritually and morally] for the Lord.”(D)
18 “How can I know this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “For I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.”(h)
18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
18 Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For (AB)I am an old man and my wife is advanced in (n)years.”
18 Then Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this, since I am an old man, and my wife is getting older?"
18 And Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I be certain of this? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in age.”
19 The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel,(T) who stands in the presence of God,(U) and I was sent to speak to you and tell you this good news.
19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
19 The angel answered and said to him, “I am (AC)Gabriel, who (o)(AD)stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
19 The angel answered him, "I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. I have been sent to speak to you and to announce this good news to you.
20 Now listen! You will become silent and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
20 And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
20 But because you did not believe my announcement, which will be fulfilled at its proper time, you will become silent and unable to speak until the day this happens."
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, amazed that he stayed so long in the sanctuary.
21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
21 The people were waiting for Zacharias, and were wondering at his delay in the temple.
21 Meanwhile, the people kept waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed in the sanctuary so long.
21 The people [outside in the court] were waiting for Zacharias, and were wondering about his long delay in the temple.
22 When he did come out, he could not speak to them. Then they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He kept making signs to them(V) and remained speechless.
22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
22 But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them; and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he (AE)kept (p)making signs to them, and remained mute.
22 But when he did come out, he was unable to speak to them. Then they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He kept motioning to them but remained unable to speak.
22 But when he did come out, he was unable to speak to them. They realized that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he kept making signs to them, and remained mute.
23 When the days of his ministry were completed, he went back home.
23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
23 When the days of his priestly service were ended, he went back home.
23 When the days of his service were over, he went home.
23 When his time of priestly service was finished, he returned to his home.
24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived and kept herself in seclusion for five months. She said,
24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

25 “The Lord has done this for me. He has looked with favor in these days to take away my disgrace(W) among the people.”
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
25 “This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to (AF)take away my disgrace among men.”
25 "This is what the Lord did for me when he looked favorably on me and took away my public disgrace."

43 Why should this happen to me, to have the mother of my Lord visit me?
43 And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord would come to me?
44 For you see, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped for joy inside me!(n)
