                                    1 Many have undertaken to compile a narrative about the events that have been fulfilled(a) among us,(A)                                 

                                    1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

                                    5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.                                

                                    5 (K)In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named (g)Zacharias, of the (L)division of (h)Abijah; and he had a wife (i)from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

                                    17 It is he who will (X)go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of (Y)Elijah, (Z)to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to (AA)make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”                                

                                    17 He is the one who will go before the Lord with the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, and to prepare the people to be ready for the Lord."                                

                                    17 It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous [which is to seek and submit to the will of God]—in order to make ready a people [perfectly] prepared [spiritually and morally] for the Lord.”(D)

                                    18 “How can I know this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “For I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.”(h)                                 

                                    18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

                                    19 The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel,(T) who stands in the presence of God,(U) and I was sent to speak to you and tell you this good news.                                 

                                    19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.                                

                                    19 The angel answered and said to him, “I am (AC)Gabriel, who (o)(AD)stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.                                

                                    19 The angel answered him, "I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. I have been sent to speak to you and to announce this good news to you.                                 

                                    19 The angel replied and said to him, “I am Gabriel; I stand and minister in the [very] presence of God, and I have been sent [by Him] to speak to you and to bring you this good news.(E)

                                    20 Now listen! You will become silent and unable to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”                                 

                                    20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.                                

                                    20 And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”                                

                                    20 But because you did not believe my announcement, which will be fulfilled at its proper time, you will become silent and unable to speak until the day this happens."                                

                                    20 (h)Listen carefully, you will be continually silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe what I told you; but my words will be fulfilled at their proper time.”

                                    21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, amazed that he stayed so long in the sanctuary.                                 

                                    21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

                                    34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have not been intimate with a man?”(j)

                                    35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.                                

                                    35 The angel answered and said to her, “(AR)The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of (AS)the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason (AT)the (y)holy Child shall be called (AU)the Son of God.                                

                                    35 The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come over you, and the power of the Most High will surround you. Therefore, the child will be holy and will be called the Son of God.                                 

                                    35 Then the angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you [like a cloud]; for that reason the holy (pure, sinless) Child shall be called the Son of God.(H)

                                    36 And consider your relative Elizabeth—even she has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called childless.                                 

                                    36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
