The Parable Of The Dishonest Manager

1 And He said also to His disciples, "There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and the same was accused to him as squandering his goods.

1 Now He was also saying to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and this manager was (a)reported to him as (A)squandering his possessions.

1 And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.

1 He also said to the disciples: “There was a rich(A) man who received an accusation that his manager(B) was squandering(C) his possessions.

1 Now Jesus was saying to the disciples, "A rich man had a servant manager who was accused of wasting his assets.

2 And, calling him, he said to him, 'What is this I hear of you? Render the account of your stewardship; for you can be no longer steward.'

2 And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’

2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.

2 So he called the manager in and asked, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management,(D) because you can no longer be my manager.’

2 So he called for him and asked him, "What's this I hear about you? You can't be my manager any longer. Now give me a report about your management!'

3 And the steward said in himself, 'What shall I do? because my lord takes away the stewardship from me! To dig, I have not strength; to beg, I am ashamed!

3 The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my (b)master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig; I am ashamed to beg.

3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.

3 “Then the manager said to himself, ‘What should I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I’m not strong enough to dig; I’m ashamed to beg.

3 "Then the servant manager told himself, "What should I do? My master is taking my position away from me. I'm not strong enough to plow, and I'm ashamed to beg.

4 I resolved what to do; that, when I am removed from the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.'

4 I know what I shall do, so that when I am removed from the management people will welcome me into their homes.’

4 I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.

4 I know what I’ll do so that when I’m removed from management, people will welcome me into their homes.’

4 I know what I'll do so that people will welcome me into their homes when I'm dismissed from my job.'

5 And, calling to him each one of his lord's debtors, he said to the first, 'How much do you owe my lord?'

5 And he summoned each one of his (c)master’s debtors, and he began saying to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’

5 So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?

5 “So he summoned each one of his master’s debtors. ‘How much do you owe my master?’ he asked the first one.

5 "So he called for each of his master's debtors. He asked the first, "How much do you owe my master?'

6 And he said, 'A hundred measures of oil.' And he said to him, 'Take your accounts, and, sitting down, quickly write, Fifty.'

6 And he said, ‘A hundred (d)measures of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’

6 And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.

6 “‘A hundred measures of olive oil,’ he said.“‘Take your invoice,’ he told him, ‘sit down quickly, and write 50.’

6 The man replied, "A hundred jars of olive oil.' The manager told him, "Get your bill. Sit down quickly and write "50."'

7 After that he said to another, 'And how much do you owe?' And he said, 'A hundred measures of wheat.' He says to him, 'Take your accounts, and write, Four score.'

7 Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘A hundred (e)measures of wheat.’ He *said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’

7 Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.

7 “Next he asked another, ‘How much do you owe?’“‘A hundred measures of wheat,’ he said.“‘Take your invoice,’ he told him, ‘and write 80.’

7 Then he asked another debtor, "How much do you owe?' The man replied, "A hundred containers of wheat.' The manager told him, "Get your bill and write "80."'

8 And the lord praised the steward of unrighteousness, because he acted prudently; because the sons of this age are more prudent toward their own generation, than the sons of light.

8 And his (f)master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of (B)this age are more shrewd in relation to their own (g)kind than the (C)sons of light.

8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

8 “The master praised the unrighteous manager(E) because he had acted astutely. For the sons of this age(F) are more astute than the sons of light(G) in dealing with their own people.(a)

8 The master praised the dishonest servant manager for being so clever, because worldly people are more clever than enlightened people in dealing with their own.

9 And I say to you, make to yourselves friends out of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when it fails, they may receive you into everlasting tabernacles.

9 And I say to you, (D)make friends for yourselves by means of the (h)(E)wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, (F)they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.

9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

9 And I tell you, make friends(H) for yourselves by means of the unrighteous money(I) so that when it fails,(b) they may welcome you into eternal dwellings.

9 "I'm telling you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails, they will welcome you into eternal homes.

10 He that is faithful in the least is faithful also in much; he that is unrighteous in the least is unrighteous in much.

10 (G)He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much.

10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

10 Whoever is faithful(J) in very little(K) is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much.

10 Whoever is faithful with very little is also faithful with a lot, and whoever is dishonest with very little is also dishonest with a lot.

11 If, therefore, ye were not faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will entrust to you the true riches?

11 Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous (i)(H)wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?

11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

11 So if you have not been faithful with the unrighteous money, who will trust you with what is genuine?

11 So if you haven't been faithful with unrighteous wealth, who will trust you with true wealth?

12 And, if ye were not faithful in that which is another's, who will give to you your own?

12 And if you have not been faithful in the use of that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?

12 And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?

12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to someone else, who will give you what is your own?

12 And if you haven't been faithful with what belongs to foreigners, who will give you what is your own?

13 No domestic can serve two lords; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or he will hold to one, and despise the other: ye cannot serve God and mammon."

13 (I)No (j)servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and (k)(J)wealth.”

13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

13 No(L) household slave can be the slave of two masters, since either he will hate(M) one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t be slaves to both God and money.”

13 "No servant can serve two masters, because either he will hate one and love the other, or be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and wealth!"

Hypocrisy, Law, And The Kingdom Of God

14 And the Pharisees, being lovers of money, were hearing all these things, and were openly mocking Him.

14 Now the Pharisees, who were (K)lovers of money, were listening to all these things and (L)were scoffing at Him.

14 And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.

14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money,(N) were listening to all these things and scoffing(O) at Him.

14 Now the Pharisees, who love money, had been listening to all this and began to ridicule Jesus.

15 And He said to them, "Ye are those who justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts; because that which is exalted among men is an abomination before God.

15 And He said to them, “You are those who (M)justify yourselves (l)in the sight of men, but (N)God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable (m)in the sight of God.

15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

15 And He told them: “You are the ones who justify(P) yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts.(Q) For what is highly admired by people is revolting(R) in God’s sight.

15 So he told them, "You try to justify yourselves in front of people, but God knows your hearts, because what is highly valued by people is detestable to God.

24 And, crying, he said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; because I am in anguish in this flame!'

24 And he cried out and said, ‘(V)Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in (W)this flame.’

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

24 ‘Father Abraham!’(AH) he called out, ‘Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony(AI) in this flame!’

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

25 “‘Son,’(f) Abraham said, ‘remember that during your life you received your good things,(AJ) just as Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here,(AK) while you are in agony.

25 "But Abraham said, "My child, remember that during your lifetime you received blessings, while Lazarus received hardships. But now he is being comforted here, while you suffer.

26 And, in all these things, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed; so that those wishing to cross from hence to you cannot; nor do they pass from thence to us.'

26 And (r)besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’
