Human Traditions And God's Commandments
1 The Pharisees gathered about him with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem.
1 Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.
1 (A)The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come (B)from Jerusalem,
1 The(A) Pharisees(B) and some of the scribes(C) who had come from Jerusalem(D) gathered around Him.
1 The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus.
2 They had noticed that some of his disciples ate their food without first giving their hands a ceremonial washing to purify them.
2 And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.
2 and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with (C)impure hands, that is, unwashed.
2 They observed that some of His disciples were eating their bread with unclean(E)—that is, unwashed—hands.
2 They noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them.
3 For the Pharisees and all the Jews observe the rules handed down from their ancestors, and will not eat until they have washed their hands in a particular way,
3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they (a)carefully wash their hands, thus observing the (D)traditions of the elders;
3 (For the Pharisees, in fact all the Jews, will not eat unless they wash their hands ritually, keeping the tradition of the elders.
3 (The Pharisees and indeed all the Jewish people don't eat unless they wash their hands properly, following the tradition of their elders.
4 and they will not eat anything from the market without first purifying it by sprinkling it, and they have a number of other observances which have come down to them, in the way of washing cups, pitchers, and basins.
4 And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.
4 and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they (b)cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the (c)washing of (E)cups and pitchers and copper pots.)
4 When they come from the marketplace,(F) they do not eat unless they have washed.(G) And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, jugs, copper utensils, and dining couches.(a)(H))
4 They don't eat anything from the marketplace unless they dip it in water. They also observe many other traditions, such as the proper washing of washing cups, jars, brass pots, and dinner tables.)
5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not observe the rules handed down by our ancestors, but eat food without purifying their hands?"
5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
5 The Pharisees and the scribes *asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the (F)tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with (G)impure hands?”
5 Then the Pharisees(I) and the scribes(J) asked Him, “Why don’t Your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders,(K) instead of eating bread with ritually unclean(b) hands?”
5 So the Pharisees and the scribes asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat with unclean hands."
6 But he said to them, "It was about you hypocrites that Isaiah prophesied so finely, in the words, " 'This people honor me with their lips, Yet their hearts are far away from me.
6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
6 And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:‘(H)This people honors Me with their lips,But their heart is far away from Me.
6 He answered them, “Isaiah(L) prophesied(M) correctly about you hypocrites,(N) as it is written:(O)These people honor(P) Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.
6 He told them, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites. As it is written, "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
9 "How skilful you are," he said to them, "in nullifying what God has commanded in order to observe what has been handed down to you.
9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
9 He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your (K)tradition.
9 He also said to them, “You completely invalidate God’s command in order to maintain(e) your tradition!
9 Then he told them, "You have such a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your own tradition!
10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and again, 'Whoever abuses his father or mother must be put to death.'
10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:
10 For Moses said, ‘(L)Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘(M)He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to (d)be put to death’;
10 For Moses(U) said:Honor your father and your mother;(V)(f) andWhoever speaks evil of father or mothermust be put to death.(W)(g)
10 Because Moses said, "Honor your father and your mother,' and, "Whoever curses his father or mother must certainly be put to death.'
11 But you say, 'If a man says to his father or mother, "Anything of mine that might have been of use to you is Korban," ' that is, consecrated to God,
11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.
11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is (N)Corban (that is to say, (e)given to God),’
11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit(X) you might have received from me is Corban’” (that is, a gift(Y) committed to the temple),
11 But you say, "If anyone tells his father or mother, "Whatever support you might have received from me is Corban,"' (that is, an offering to God)
12 you let him off from doing anything more for his father or mother,
12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;
12 “you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.
12 "you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.'
13 and so you nullify what God has said by what you have handed down. You have many such practices."
13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
13 thus invalidating the word of God by your (O)tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”
13 You revoke God’s word(Z) by your tradition that you have handed(AA) down. And you do many other similar things.”
13 You are destroying the word of God through your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other things like that."
Defilement From Within
14 He called the people to him again and said to them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand this.
14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:
14 After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:
14 Then he called to the crowd again and told them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand!
15 Nothing that goes into a man from outside can pollute him. It is what comes out of a man that pollutes him."
15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
15 there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.
15 Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.
15 Nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean. It's what comes out of a person that makes a person unclean.
17 When he had left the crowd and gone home, his disciples asked him what he meant by this figure.
17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.
17 When he had left the crowd and entered (P)the house, (Q)His disciples questioned Him about the parable.
17 When He went into the house away from the crowd, the disciples asked Him about the parable.
17 When he had left the crowd and gone home, his disciples began asking him about the parable.
18 And he said to them, "Have not even you any understanding then? Do you not see that nothing that goes into a man from outside can pollute him,
18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
18 And He *said to them, “Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him,
18 And He said to them, “Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don’t you realize that nothing going into a man from the outside can defile him?
18 He asked them, "Are you so ignorant? Don't you know that nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean?
19 since it does not go into his heart but into his stomach and then is disposed of?" So he declared all food clean.
19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?
19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and (g)is eliminated?” (Thus He declared (R)all foods (S)clean.)
19 For it doesn’t go into his heart but into the stomach(AD) and is eliminated.”(i) (As a result, He made all foods clean.(j)(AE))
19 Because it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then into the sewer, thereby expelling all foods."
21 For it is from inside, from men's hearts, that designs of evil come; immorality, stealing, murder, adultery,
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, (h)fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries,
21 For from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities,(AF) thefts, murders,(AG)
21 because it's from within, from the human heart, that evil thoughts come, as well as sexual immorality, stealing, murder,
22 greed, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, abusiveness, arrogance, folly??23 all these evils come from inside, and they pollute a man."
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
22 deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, (i)(U)envy, slander, (j)pride and foolishness.
22 adulteries,(AH) greed,(AI) evil actions, deceit,(AJ) promiscuity,(AK) stinginess,(k) blasphemy,(AL) pride,(AM) and foolishness.(AN)
22 adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness.
A Syrophoenician Woman's Great Faith
23 He left that place and went to the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon. And he went into a certain house, and wanted no one to know of it. And he could not keep it secret,
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
23 All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”
23 All these evil things come from within and defile a person.”
23 All these things come from inside and make a person unclean."
24 but a woman whose little daughter was possessed by a foul spirit immediately heard about him and came and threw herself at his feet.
24 And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.
24 (V)Jesus got up and went away from there to the region of (W)Tyre(k). And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know of it; (l)yet He could not escape notice.
24 He got up and departed from(AO) there to the region of Tyre(AP) and Sidon.(l)(AQ) He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it, but He could not escape notice.
24 Jesus left that place and went to the territory of Tyre and Sidon. He went into a house, not wanting anyone to know he was there. However, it couldn't be kept a secret.
25 Now the woman was a Greek, of Syrophoenician birth. And she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter.
25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:
25 But after hearing of Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet.
25 Instead, immediately after hearing about Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit(AR) came and fell at His feet.(AS)
25 In fact, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him and came and fell down at his feet.
26 He said to her, "Let the children first eat all they want, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."
26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
26 Now the woman was a (m)Gentile, of the Syrophoenician race. And she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.
26 Now the woman was Greek,(AT) a Syrophoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to drive the demon(AU) out of her daughter.
26 Now the woman happened to be a Greek, born in Phoenicia in Syria. She kept asking him to drive the demon out of her daughter.
27 But she answered, "True, sir! and still the dogs under the table eat what the children leave!"
27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.
27 And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not (n)good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
27 He said to her, “Allow the children to be satisfied first, because it isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”(AV)
27 But he kept telling her, "First let the children be filled. It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies."
28 He said to her, "If you can say that, go home; the demon has left your daughter."
28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.
28 But she answered and *said to Him, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children’s crumbs.”
28 But she answered him, "Yes, Lord. Yet even the puppies under the table eat some of the children's crumbs."
29 And she went home and found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.
29 And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.
29 Then He told her, “Because of this reply, you may go. The demon has gone out of your daughter.”
29 Then he told her, "Because you have said this, go! The demon has left your daughter."
A Man Deaf And Unable To Speak Healed
30 He left the neighborhood of Tyre again and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, crossing the district of the Ten Towns.
30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.
30 When she went back to her home, she found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.
30 So she went home and found her child lying in bed, and the demon was gone.
31 And they brought to him a man who was deaf and hardly able to speak, and they begged him to lay his hand on him.
31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.
31 (X)Again He went out from the region of (Y)Tyre, and came through Sidon to (Z)the Sea of Galilee, within the region of (AA)Decapolis.
31 Again, leaving the region of Tyre,(AX) He went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,(AY) through(m) the region of the Decapolis.(AZ)
31 Then Jesus left the territory of Tyre and passed through Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the territory of the Decapolis.
32 He took him off by himself away from the crowd, and put his fingers in the man's ears, and touched his tongue with saliva.
32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
32 They *brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they *implored Him to (AB)lay His hand on him.
32 They brought to Him a deaf(BA) man who also had a speech difficulty,(BB) and begged Jesus to lay His hand on(BC) him.
32 Some people brought him a deaf man who also had a speech impediment. They begged him to lay his hand on him.
33 And he looked up to heaven and sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha!"??hich means "Open."
33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;
33 (AC)Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after (AD)spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva;
33 So He took him away from the crowd privately. After putting His fingers in the man’s ears and spitting,(BD) He touched his tongue.
33 Jesus took him away from the crowd to be alone with him. Putting his fingers into the man's ears, he touched the man's tongue with saliva.
34 And his ears were opened and his tongue was released and he talked plainly.
34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.
34 and looking up to heaven with a deep (AE)sigh, He *said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!”
34 Then, looking up to heaven,(BE) He sighed deeply and said to him, “Ephphatha!”(n) (that is, “Be opened!”).
34 Then he looked up to heaven, sighed, and told him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened!"
35 And Jesus forbade them to tell anyone about it, but the more he forbade them the more they spread the news far and wide.
35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
35 And his ears were opened, and the (q)impediment of his tongue (r)was removed, and he began speaking plainly.
35 Immediately his ears were opened,(BF) his speech difficulty was removed,(o) and he began to speak clearly.(BG)
35 The man's hearing and speech were restored at once, and he began to talk normally.
36 And people were utterly amazed, and said, "How well he has done everything! He even makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak!"
36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
36 And (AF)He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they (AG)continued to proclaim it.
36 Then He ordered them to tell no one,(BH) but the more He would order them, the more they would proclaim(BI) it.
36 Jesus ordered the people not to tell anyone, but the more he kept ordering them, the more they kept spreading the news.
