3 So you must observe and do whatever they tell you. But do not do what they do; for they preach, but do not practice.

3 therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.

3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

3 Therefore do whatever they tell you, and observe it. But don’t do what they do,(b) because they don’t practice what they teach.(D)

3 so do whatever they tell you and follow it, but stop doing what they do, because they don't do what they say.

4 They bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.

4 (C)They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.

4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

4 They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry(c) and put them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger(d) to move them.(E)

4 They tie up burdens that are heavy and unbearable and lay them on people's shoulders, but they refuse to lift a finger to remove them.

5 But they do all their works to be seen by men; for they make their phylacteries broad and the tassels of their garments long.

5 But they do all their deeds (D)to be noticed by men; for they (E)broaden their (a)phylacteries and lengthen (F)the tassels of their garments.

5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,

5 They do everything(e) to be observed by others: They enlarge their phylacteries(f)(F) and lengthen their tassels.(g)(G)

5 "They do everything to be seen by people. They increase the size of their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments.

6 And they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues,

6 They (G)love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues,

6 They love the place of honor at banquets, the front seats in the synagogues,(H)

6 They love to have the places of honor at festivals, the best seats in the synagogues,

7 and greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi.'

7 and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called (H)Rabbi by men.

7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

7 greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by people.

7 to be greeted in the marketplaces, and to be called "Rabbi' by people.

8 But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master, and you are all brethren.

8 But (I)do not be called (J)Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.

8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

8 “But as for you, do not be called ‘Rabbi,’ because you have one Teacher,(h) and you are all brothers.(I)

8 "But you are not to be called "Rabbi,' because you have only one teacher, and all of you are brothers.

9 And do not call anyone on earth your 'Father,' for you have one Father, he who is in heaven.

9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; for (K)One is your Father, He who is in heaven.

9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

9 Do not call anyone on earth your father, because you have one Father, who is in heaven.(J)

9 And don't call anyone on earth "Father,' because you have only one Father, the one in heaven.

10 Nor are you to be called 'Teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ.

10 Do not be called (b)leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ.

10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

10 And do not be called masters either, because you have one Master,(i) the Messiah.

10 Nor are you to be called "Teachers,' because you have only one teacher, the Messiah!

11 He who is greatest among you shall be your servant.

11 The greatest among you will be your servant.(K)

11 The person who is greatest among you must be your servant.

12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

12 (M)Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.(L)

12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Jesus Condemns Their Hypocrisy

13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither enter yourselves, nor do you allow those who would enter to go in.

13 (N)But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, (O)because you shut off the kingdom of heaven (c)from (d)people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You lock up the kingdom of heaven from people. For you don’t go in, and you don’t allow those entering to go in.(M)

13 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door to the kingdom from heaven in people's faces. You don't go in yourselves, and you don't allow those who are trying to enter to go in.

14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

14 [“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You devour widows’ houses and make long prayers just for show.(j) This is why you will receive a harsher punishment.](k)

14 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You devour widows' houses and say long prayers to cover it up. Therefore, you will receive greater condemnation!

15 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win a single proselyte, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make one proselyte,(N) and when he becomes one, you make him twice as fit for hell(l) as you are!

15 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make a single convert, and when this happens you make him twice as fit for hell as you are.

16 “Woe to you, (S)blind guides, who say, ‘(T)Whoever swears by the (h)temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the (i)temple is obligated.’

16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

16 “Woe to you, blind guides,(O) who say, ‘Whoever takes an oath by the sanctuary, it means nothing. But whoever takes an oath(P) by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by his oath.’(m)

16 "How terrible it will be for you, blind guides! You say, "Whoever swears an oath by the sanctuary is excused, but whoever swears an oath by the gold of the sanctuary must keep his oath.'

17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?

17 You fools and blind men! (U)Which is (j)more important, the gold or the (k)temple that sanctified the gold?

17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

18 And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing, but whoever swears by the (l)offering on it, he is obligated.’

18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

18 Also, ‘Whoever takes an oath by the altar, it means nothing. But whoever takes an oath by the gift that is on it is bound by his oath.’(o)

20 Therefore, (p)whoever swears by the altar, swears both by (q)the altar and by everything on it.

20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.

20 Therefore, the one who takes an oath by the altar takes an oath by it and by everything on it.

20 Therefore, the one who swears an oath by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.

21 And he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it.

21 And (r)whoever swears by the (s)temple, swears both by (t)the temple and by Him who (W)dwells within it.

22 And the one who swears an oath by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it.

23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the Law, justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

23 (Y)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and (v)cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You pay a tenth of(q) mint, dill, and cumin,(r) yet you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice,(U) mercy, and faith. These things should have been done without neglecting the others.

24 You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

24 You (Z)blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

24 Blind guides!(V) You strain out a gnat, yet gulp down a camel!

24 You blind guides! You filter out a gnat, yet swallow a camel!

25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.

25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (AA)you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full (w)of robbery and self-indulgence.

25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed(s) and self-indulgence!(W)

25 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but on the inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

26 Blind Pharisee! First cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.

26 You blind Pharisee, first (AB)clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.

26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup,(t) so the outside of it(u) may also become clean.

26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that its outside may also be clean.

27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which outwardly appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.

27 (AC)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.

27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs,(X) which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every impurity.

27 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of dead people's bones and every kind of impurity.

28 Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

28 So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

28 In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

28 In the same way, on the outside you look righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 (AD)Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,

29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

29 "How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous.

30 And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'

30 and say, ‘If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’

30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

30 and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have taken part with them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’(v)

30 Then you say, "If we had been living in the days of our ancestors, we would have had no part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'

31 Thus you witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.

31 So you testify against yourselves, that you (AE)are (x)sons of those who murdered the prophets.

31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

31 You, therefore, testify against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.

31 Therefore, you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets.

32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers' guilt.

32 Fill up, then, the measure of the guilt of your fathers.

32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ sins!(w)(Y)

32 Then finish what your ancestors started!

33 You serpents! You brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?

33 You serpents, (AF)you brood of vipers, how (y)will you escape the (z)sentence of (aa)(AG)hell?

33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

33 “Snakes! Brood of vipers! How can you escape being condemned to hell?(x)(Z)

33 You snakes, you children of serpents! How can you escape being condemned to hell?

34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from town to town,

34 (AH)Therefore, behold, (AI)I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will (AJ)scourge in your synagogues, and (AK)persecute from city to city,

34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:

34 This is why I am sending you prophets,(AA) sages, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues(AB) and hound from town to town.

34 "That is why I am sending you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will whip in your synagogues and persecute from town to town.

35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

35 so that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous (AL)Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the (AM)son of Berechiah, whom (AN)you murdered between the (ab)temple and the altar.

35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.

35 So all the righteous blood shed on the earth will be charged to you,(y) from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah,(AC) son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.(AD)

35 As a result, you will be held accountable for all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of the righteous Abel to the blood of Berechiah's son Zechariah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

36 Truly, I say to you, all this will come upon this generation.

36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon (AO)this generation.

36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

36 I assure you: All these things will come on this generation!(AE)

36 I tell all of you with certainty, all these things will happen to those living today."

The Lament Over Jerusalem

37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

37 (AP)Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who (AQ)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, (AR)the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem!(AF) She who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks(z) under her wings, yet you were not willing!(AG)

37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones to death those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!

38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate.

38 Behold, (AS)your house is being left to you desolate!

38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

38 See, your house is left to you desolate.(AH)

38 Look! Your house is left abandoned!

39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

39 For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘(AT)Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

39 For I tell you, you will never see Me again until you say, ‘He who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One’!”(AI)(aa)

39 I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, "How blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!'"
