Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village [i.e., Bethany. See John 11:1], and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house.
And it came about that when he got near Beth-phage and Bethany by the mountain which is named the Mountain of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,
Now Jesus was teaching in the Temple every day, and He went out and lodged on the hill called Olivet every night [Note: Possibly this meant He lodged in a house in Bethany, which was situated on the side of this hill].
And he led them without [the city] as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.
This took place at Bethany on the farther side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The next day, having decided to leave Bethany and go into Galilee, Jesus found Philip, and invited him to follow Him.
And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister --
And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,
& 31] Now as Bethany is not far from Jerusalem, only about two miles away,
Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived in Bethany, where Lazarus lived, the man whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

This could have been sold for much and given to the poor. But Jesus knowing it, said to them, Why do you trouble the woman? for she has done a good work for me; for the poor you always have with you, but me you have not always. For in putting this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. But the Iscariot, one of his disciples, who was about to betray him, said, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred denarii [$42], and given to the poor? But he said this, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the treasure-chest, and carried off the things put in it. Then Jesus said, Let her alone, that she may keep this for the day of preparation for my burial; the poor you always have with you, but me you have not always. A great multitude of the Jews, therefore, knew that he was there, and came, not on account of Jesus only, but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead.
