But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king's sons that were being slain, and put him and his nurse in a bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for she was the sister of Ahaziah,) hid him from Athaliah, so that she slew him not.
Joash remained with them for six years, hidden in God's Temple while Athaliah reigned over the land.
Then all the assembly made a covenant in the house of God with the king [that is, with the child Joash, to overthrow Athaliah by proclaiming his sovereignty]. And Jehoiada [the priest] said to them, “Behold, the king’s son [Joash] shall reign, as the Lord has said in regard to the sons of David.
The Levites shall surround the [young] king, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes into the temple [breaking through the ranks of the guard to get near Joash] is to be killed. You are to be with the king when he comes in [from the temple chamber where he is hiding] and when he goes out.”
Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.
And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
And it came to pass after this, that Joash had a mind to repair the house of the LORD.
Now after the death of Jehoiada [the priest, who had hidden Joash], the officials of Judah came and
Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and repay it.
At the turn of the year, an Aramean army went to war against Joash.
For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.

So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they looked one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah.
And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.

Then he brought out the king's son, and put the crown upon him, and [gave him] the testimony. And they made him king, and anointed him. And they clapped their hands, and said, Live, O king.

But there were not made for the house of LORD cups of silver, snuffers, basins, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver, of the money that was brought into the house of LORD, for they gave that to those who did the work, and with it repaired the house of LORD. Moreover they did not reckon with the men into whose hand they delivered the money to give to those who did the work, for they dealt faithfully. The money for the trespass-offerings, and the money for the sin-offerings, was not brought into the house of LORD; it was the priests'.
For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God, and also all the dedicated things of the house of LORD they bestowed upon the Baalim. So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of the house of LORD. And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in for LORD the tax that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness. And he So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet. And they had slain Athaliah with the sword at the king's house. Joash was seven years old when he began to reign.
