And the first thing in the morning the chief priests, with those in authority and the scribes and all the Sanhedrin, had a meeting, and put cords round Jesus, and took him away, and gave him up to Pilate.
And Pilate put a question to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And he, answering, said to him, You say so.
When the chief priests continued making many accusations against him, Pilate repeatedly questioned him.
And Pilate again put a question, Do you say nothing in answer? see how much evil they say you have done.
But Jesus gave no more answers, so that Pilate was full of wonder.
At that feast Pilate was wont to deliver at their pleasure a prisoner: whomsoever they would desire.
The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom.
And Pilate said in answer to them, Is it your desire that I let the King of the Jews go free?
But the leading priests stirred up the crowd to insist that Pilate release Barabbas to them instead.
And Pilate again said in answer to them, What then am I to do to him to whom you give the name of the King of the Jews?
And they cried out again, Crucify him. Then Pilate said to them, Why, what evil hath he done?
And Pilate said to them, Why, what evil has he done? But their cry was the louder, To the cross!
And Pilate, desiring to do what was pleasing to the people, let Barabbas go free, and gave up Jesus, when he had been whipped, to be put to death on the cross.
There came Joseph of Arimathaea, a responsible man in high honour, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God; and he went in to Pilate without fear, and made a request for the body of Jesus.
And Pilate was surprised that he was dead; and, sending for the captain, he put a question to see if he had been dead for long.
When Pilate was informed by the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

And the governor, answering, said to them, "Which of the two do ye desire that I should release to you?" And they said, Barabbas." Pilate says to them, "What, then, shall I do to Jesus Who is called Christ?" They all say, "Let Him be crucified." But he said, "Why, what evil did He perform?" And they were crying out the more, saying, "Let Him be crucified!" And Pilate, seeing that it availed nothing, but rather a tumult was being made, taking water, washed his hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this Man. Ye shall see to it." And all the people, answering, said, "His blood be upon us, and upon our children." Then he released to them Barabbas; but, having scourged Jesus, he delivered Him up to be crucified.
Chastising Him, therefore, I will release Him" OMITTED TEXT. But they cried out again with all the multitude, saying, "Away with Him! and release to us Barabbas!"??19 one who, indeed, because of a certain insurrection made in the city, and of murder, was cast into prison. And again Pilate called to them, wishing to release Jesus. But they kept calling out, saying, "Crucify, crucify Him!" But he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil did This Man do? I found in Him nothing worthy of death. Chastising Him, therefore, I will release Him." But they were urgent, with loud voices, asking that He might be crucified. And their voices prevailed. And Pilate gave judgment that their request should be executed;
and he entered again into the Praetorium, and says to Jesus, "Whence art Thou?" But Jesus gave him no answer. Pilate, therefore, says to Him, "Dost Thou not speak to me? Knowest Thou not that I have authority to release Thee, and have authority to crucify Thee?" Jesus answered him, "You would have no authority against Me, unless it were given to you from above; on this account, he who delivered Me up to you has greater sin." In consequence of this, Pilate was seeking to release Him; but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you release this Man, you are not Caesar's friend; every one who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar." Pilate, therefore, having heard these words, led Jesus without, and sat down on the judgment-seat at a place called the "Pavement," but, in Hebrew, "Gabbatha."
